On two occasions prior to the start being effected REDOUTE'S POWER (C. Pye) reared, then was slow to begin.
IDANCE (T. O'Hara) was difficult to load into the barriers.
NORDIC JET (App. A. Kitson) was a little slow to begin.
GRIZZLE (B. El-Issa) and MADAM DIDDLY (D. Evans) began awkwardly.
At the start FANCY FERN (App. S. McCullum) was tightened for room and hampered between SAYITWITHLOVE (D. Hayse) and RE ECHO (B. Stewart), which jumped inwards.
Shortly after the start, NORDIC JET was awkwardly placed and raced ungenerously on the heels of SAYITWITHLOVE
In the early part of the straight IDANCE was held up on the heels of SAYITWITHLOVE and was unable to gain clear running until near the 400 metres, where it shifted out to improve.
BLOOMSDAY (App. R. Johnston-Bell) and SAYITWITHLOVE raced wide throughout.
Race 2: Larsen’s Airconditioning Hire Class 1 Handicap - 970 metres
1st ALOTTA MOJO 2nd HAYYLER'S DRAGON 3rd NISEKO GOLD 4th - BIG BERT
Due to a misunderstanding Jockey L. Dillon was dually engaged for HAYYLER'S DRAGON and ARRESTED FOR HUNGING. Stewards permitted App. A. Taylor to be substituted as the rider of ARRESTEDFORHUNTING.
PLUM BOB (B. El-Issa) began awkwardly.
HAYYLER'S DRAGON (L. Dillon) was slow to begin.
At the start BIG BERT (D. Hayse) was tightened for room between ME FAST TOO (J. P. Stanley) and JESTER'S CHOICE (App. K. Gates) and became unbalanced when awkwardly placed on the heels of JESTER'S CHOICE.
In the early part of the straight BIG BERT was held up and unable to obtain clear running until near the 400 metres, then was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages.
Inside the final 100 metres NISEKO GOLD (App. A. Kitson) shifted out under pressure, resulting in HAYYLER'S DRAGON having to alter course to the inside of that runner.
ARRESTEDFORHUNTING raced wide throughout.
Race 3: Day to Day Constructions Pty Ltd 3YO Handicap - 1200 metres
1st MT ZIGGARO 2nd FINAL CHAPTER 3rd VAST ELEMENT 4th - LIKE THIS
MT ZIGGARO (A. Coome) began awkwardly.
SMALL WORLD (App. A. Kitson) began awkwardly and lost ground.
Approaching the 1000 metres MT ZIGGARO improved to the inside of ZABOMB (D. Evans), shifted in slightly and tightened the running of FINAL CHAPTER (T. O'Hara), which was taken in onto LIKE THIS (App. A. Taylor), which in turn was taken in onto the hindquarters of CRAIGLEA PINTARA (App. R. Johnston-Bell), which shifted out, and LIKE THIS was taken back out onto FINAL CHAPTER, which had to be checked from the heels of MT ZIGGARO.
Jockey D. Evans pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 900 metres he permitted ZABOMB to shift in when insufficiently clear of MT ZIGGARO, which was taken in, causing CRAIGLEA PINTARA to steady and relinquish its position and DROPPER CRYSTAL (D. Hayes) to be checked and lose its rightful running. Jockey Evans was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 4 meetings, to commence at midnight on 24th August 2013, up to and including 10th September 2013.
Stewards sought an explanation from trainer M. Lehmann for the seemingly disappointing performance of ZABOMB (D. Evans). Mr Lehmann advised that on returning to scale Jockey Evans had stated that the gelding failed to travel throughout the event and proved disappointing. He added that in his opinion removing the blinkers from the approved gear for ZABOMB and the 3 weeks between the horse's runs may have been detrimental to the performance of ZABOMB. It was observed that the gelding was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages. Stewards will seek follow-up comments from connections in the days subsequent to the event.
Trainer J. Pointon advised stewards that ZAZALURI (B. El-Issa) will now be sent for a spell.
Race 4: Calibre Earthmoving & Environmental Pty Ltd Class 2 Handicap - 1200 metres
1st SINDIBAD 2nd TESTYA TIME 3rd STRATEGIC GLORY 4th - HEAD HIGH
PERMISSION GRANTEED (D. Evans) knuckled badly on jumpng, dislodging its rider. Jockey Evans was examined by the Ambulance Officers and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.
BREAK OF DAWN (M. Usher) was slow to begin.
As the start was effected WESTERN YORK (App. R. Johnston-Bell) stepped back, bounded in the air and lost ground.
Leaving the 800 metres SINDIBAD (A. Coome) had to be steadied when MAX'S GIRL (L. Dillon) rolled in.
Near the 200 metres SINDIBAD, which laid out under pressure, and STRATEGIC GLORY (D. Hayse), which was inclined to lay in, bumped on a number of occasions.
App. A. Kitson reported that she was concerned about the action of PRECIOUS LILLY following the race. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare did not reveal any abnormalities.
Jockey B. Stewart (HEAD HIGH) lost his whip inside the final 100m.
When questioned as to her riding of EDGEROI DIXIE, Jockey C. Pye stated that she had been instructed to obtain a leading position, or to race handy with cover, however when the mare began awkwardly she placed EDGEROI DIXIE under pressure to obtain a midfield position behind SINDIBAD (A. Coome). Jockey Pye added that near the 900 metres EDGEROI DIXIE commenced to race ungenerously in the middle stages and was inclined to lay out. Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey Pye had erred in that she failed to maintain clear running in the home straight and had not displayed her usual vigour, nevertheless they conceded that Jockey Pye had been concerned about the waywardness of the mare. Jockey Pye was reminded of her obligation to report anything that may have affected the performance of her mounts.
Race 5: Motel 98 Class 1 Handicap - 1500 metres
1st MARTGAGE LIFTER 2nd DANE FIRE 3rd PLATINUM PEAKS 4th - CERVANCE
I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW (D. Evans) was slow into stride.
CERVANCE (A. Coome) was slow to begin.
Leaving the 1200 metres GLITZERLAND (App. R. Johnston-Bell) raced in restricted room to the inside of DANE FIRE (App. K. Gates), became awkwardly placed, had to be steadied and lost ground.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey B. El-Issa regarding the performance of RIDE LIKE THE WIND. Jockey El-Issa stated that the gelding failed to stretch out at any stage and did not respond to his riding. A post-race veterinary examination of RIDE LIKE THE WIND revealed that the gelding was sore in the near fore. Trainer W. Winters was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance prior to the gelding being permitted to race again. Mr Winters will consider that RIDE LIKE THE WIND would be sent for a spell. .
Race 6: Finchcorp Systems BM 79 Handicap - 1050 metres
1st CANNY SWIM 2nd PASSIVITY 3rd FOUR IRON 4th - PRINCE MONASHEE
After riding RIDE LIKE THE WIND in Race 5, Jockey B. El-Issa became indisposed due to a medical condition and was unable to fulfil his engagement for DINERO RAPIDO. Jockey D. Hayse was substituted. Jockey El-Issa was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.
RED STORY (App. R. Johnston-Bell), which had been slow to begin, was then tightened for room between TEN SECONDS (B. Stewart) and WHITE CAP (J. P. Stanley), both of which shifted ground.
PASSIVITY (C. Pye) and FOUR IRON (A. Coome) slipped behind at the start and began awkwardly.
WHITE CAP and TONK (App. S. McCullum) raced wide throughout.
On returning to the enclosure it was noted that TEN SECONDS had bled from both nostrils. Trainer N Mannion was advised that, as this was the first time the gelding had bled, it will be barred from racing for 3 months under A.R. 53A, and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres in the presence of a steward.
Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey C. Pye as to her riding of PASSIVITY in the early stages. Jockey Pye stated that she had anticipated being able to lead, however after beginning awkwardly she became unbalanced and as a consequence lost further ground in the early stages, resulting in her being obliged to take up a position towards the rear of the field. The explanation was noted.
Trainer C Garland reported that YOU DONE IT AGAIN would be sent for a short spell.
Race 7: RJC’s Nathan Patchett Appeal Class 4 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st DARK ANGEL 2nd DORT RILEY 3rd HOLD THAT THOUGHT 4th - PROSPECTOR BOB
DAMN GOOD IDEA (A. Coome) was slow to begin.
SCHOORWIN (App. S. McCullum) shifted out at the start, taking GRAND TURK (C. Pye) outwards onto CHEATIN' CHARLIE (App. A. Kitson), which in turn was taken out, clipped the heels of PAZZESCO (L. Dillon) and blundered.
In the early stages HOLD THAT THOUGHT (J. P. Stanley) over-raced.
From the early part of the home straight until near the 400 metres DORF RILEY (J. Stephens) was disappointed for a run.
RADIANT JOY (D. Evans) raced wide throughout. Trainer L Rowe could offer no tangible reason for its disappointing performance, however would continue with the mare’s preparation at this stage.
