Race 1:  Tropical Pool Maintenance Class 3 Plate – 1050m

STONE PHILOSPHER – Scratched from its most recent engagement in Townsville on 4 October due to a stone bruise in the off fore foot. Underwent a veterinary examination and cleared to start. Hampered on jumping away and lost ground.  A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which performed below market expectations, revealed no apparent abnormalities.

JABROOK – Began awkwardly. Hung in over the final 250m.

JAY JAY – Overraced in the early stages. Stewards questioned jockey D. Hayse regarding the tactics adopted in today’s event, in particular shortly after jumping and again inside the final 200m. Jockey Hayse stated that whilst JAY JAY began reasonably he was mindful of the gelding being first up and elected to take a midfield trailing position rather that attempt to race in a more forward position. When questioned regarding an opportunity to improve in the latter stages of the event, he stated that he was having difficulty obtaining clear running to the inside of METEOR’S MAN and was held up for some distance however, inside the final 70 m a run did present. Jockey Hayse added that, in his view, he may have erred in his judgement and did not react quickly enough when that run presented. Stewards whilst noting his explanation were mindful of the proximity to the finish line and could not be satisfied that his actions were culpable under the rules.

Bumped by PRINCELY approaching the 400m and was unable to gain clear running until the final 150m.  When questioned regarding his tactics, jockey C. Whitely stated he did not elect to ease wider approaching the 600m as he was trailing the favourite into the race and was mindful of the fact that the gelding was dropping back in distance. Jockey Whitely added that for some distance in the straight he was held up by runners to his outside, which prevented him from improving.
