QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT ROCKHAMPTON JOCKEY CLUB – TUESDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2018 WEATHER – FINE TRACK RATING – GOOD 4 RAIL – 5M OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – J. WilliamsonStewards – G. Meek, L. Hicks, M. Heath (Cadet)Clerk of Scales – W. WelburnJudge – S. BryantVeterinarian – Dr S. Olsen, Dr A. WilliamsSwab Attendant – N. BoyleStarter – C. Matthews Race 1: MILNER CONSTRUCTIONS OPEN H'CAP – 1050M FOUR EXCEL – Stewards inquired into the handling of the horse by rider L. Tilley as to whether he had opportunity to press forward to obtain a position outside the lead when the pace in the early stages was only steady. Jockey Tilley explained that he had been instructed to obtain cover if possible and after travelling a short distance saw an opportunity to settle one off the fence behind COLOSSEUM KING. He stated at this time that he felt that this runner may continue forward and take up a position on the fence, which would have allowed him to improve and settle closer to the lead. He indicated that when this did not occur and COLOSSEUM KING commenced to lose ground away from the leader in the middle stages, he did give consideration to shifting three wide to improve, however felt that that would have a detrimental effect on his horse’s finishing effort. He added that when passing the 600m he was able to shift wider in an attempt to improve. Stewards also interviewed trainer L. Wright who confirmed the instructions. Stewards accepted the explanation of jockey Tilley. SABA LASS – Laid in whilst being restrained to obtain cover in the early stages. COLOSSEUM KING – Stewards inquired into the handling of the horse, in particular rider N. Seymour’s reasons for losing ground in the middle stages after obtaining a position outside the lead. Jockey Seymour indicated that he had given consideration approaching the first turn to improving past CASINO THOUGHTS and assuming the lead, however when CASINO THOUGHTS appeared to commence to overrace near the 800m he felt that he would not have been able to cross that horse without placing undue pressure on his mount and then attempted to have his horse settle in the middle stages. He accepted that in hindsight his mount had settled more than he would have liked and also with hindsight felt that he would have been better served pushing forward and crossing to the lead near the 800m. Stewards did agree that he had erred in failing to press forward at that time near the 800m, however were not satisfied that ultimately this had an effect on the horse’s overall position and therefore took no further action.
