Race 2: GREAT NORTHERN Maiden Handicap 1300 Metres

Prior to correct weight, Jockey N Day, the rider of second placegetter DOOM DIVA, and Jockey L Tilley, the rider of fourth placegetter THE EIGHTH I AM, viewed the available replays in relation to interference approaching and leaving the 50m. Jockey L Tilley declined to proceed with a protest, while Jockey N Day lodged a protest against the winner STAR PRINCE, ridden by Jockey J Bayliss, alleging interference. After considering all submissions from the relevant parties and taking into account the ½ Neck margin between the runners, it was established that approaching the 50m, DOOM DIVA hung in under pressure and had brushed with KAYTEE REINADO, while at the same time, STAR PRINCE shifted outwards, checking THE EIGHTH I AM and then continued outwards, bumping with DOOM DIVA. Considering all circumstances, stewards could not be satisfied that the interference suffered to DOOM DIVA, taking into account the close proximity to the finish, that it warranted altering the placings, therefore the protest was dismissed, and correct weight was declared on the judge’s placings.

BEYOND STAR (NZ) – Shifted outwards under pressure passing the 200m.

THE EIGHTH I AM – Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight. Was disappointed for a run leaving the 200m, and switched inwards and was checked for a number of strides near the 60m when STAR PRINCE had shifted out when insufficiently clear. Jockey J Bayliss, the rider of STAR PRINCE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) and was suspended for a period of seven days to commence midnight 12th August 2023 and conclude at midnight 19th August 2023.
