RACE 2: PHIL PEEL JEWELLER C6 HCP - 1200M

Stewards inquired into an incident near the 150m which resulted in VILLADEN (NZ) and MEDIA EMPIRE being placed in restricted room and severely checked for a number of strides and VETTA VELOCITA being placed in restricted room and having to be steadied. After considering the evidence from apprentice A. Donald (FROSTY BEAR), S. Collett (GROOVIN’ THE MOO), W. Satherley (MEDIA EMPIRE), B. Newport (VILLADEN (NZ)) & apprentice C. Collis (VETTA VELOCITA) and taking into account the available replays and own observations, stewards determined that approaching the 150m, FROSTY BEAR commenced to hang in under pressure whilst simultaneously, GROOVIN’ THE MOO, which was racing on the inside rail, shifted out abruptly under pressure, which in turn resulted in MEDIA EMPIRE being hampered and placed awkwardly at the heels of GROOVIN’ THE MOO, whilst FROSTY BEAR after shifting in, was contacted on the hindquarters by VETTA VELOCITA, resulting in that runner bumping with VILLADEN (NZ). Stewards noted that soon after FROSTY BEAR commenced to shift ground inwards, that apprentice A. Donald ceased riding with the whip and attempted to take corrective measures, whilst at the same time, jockey S. Collett (GROOVIN’ THE MOO) also immediately took corrective measures in an attempt to prevent her mount from shifting ground outwards. When assessing the movement from the runners concerned, the corrective measures applied by Ms Donald and Ms Collett, stewards could not be satisfied to the requisite standard that they could attribute the incident solely to one rider, however issued apprentice A. Donald (FROSTY BEAR) with a reprimand for careless riding in that they were of the view, she may have been in a position to adopt corrective measures sooner than she had on this occasion.

VETTA VELOCITA – Overraced in the early and middle stages and had to be steadied from heels on a number of occasions. Steadied from heels when attempting a narrow run near the 200m and near the 150m was again steadied when placed in restricted room when FROSTY BEAR shifted in and VILLADEN shifted out after being taken out.

VILLADEN (NZ) – Pulled extremely hard near the 700m and had to be steadied from the heels of MEDIA EMPIRE. Near the 150m had to be severely checked when taken out and buffeted between MEDIA EMPIRE and VETTA VELOCITA.

He added that over the concluding stages his mount contacted STORM FORCE TEN and overreacted to this contact and shifted out taking TREBLA wider. Trainer G. Green concurred that he may be of the belief that THE BLONDE GODDESS choked down and in light of today’s performance, would be sending THE BLONDE GODDESS for a spell as well as experimenting with the gear of the filly upon its return to racing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Stewart reported that his intentions were to attempt to get to the inside, however was satisfied after finding himself in a position with cover behind the speed. He added that upon straightening, his intentions were to attempt to persist for a run between MR TANGLES and MR ENCORE, as he was of the belief that as MR ENCORE had endured a tough run and he would most likely be able to force a run between those runners. He added that when he was not able to do this as MR ENCORE held its position, he looked to improved wider on the track, but VAST KAMA had improved to his outside simultaneously which forced him to persist for a run to the inside. Jockey Stewart further added that as his mount was travelling strongly and inclined to lay in throughout the home straight, he was unable to gain a run which enabled him to test his mount fully. When assessing jockey Stewart’s comments and viewing the available replays, stewards were satisfied the explanation could be supported and took the matter no further.

Trainers representative J. Unwin confirmed the instructions and added that after not being able to be closer to the speed, this was detrimental to the filly’s chances. He added that in the circumstances, the stable was not overly disappointed with the performance and would report back to stewards if anything were to come apparent with the mare in the days subsequent.
