STEWARDS REPORT

ROMA TURF CLUB

ROMA - SATURDAY, 7 DECEMBER 2024

WEATHER – FINE TRACK RATING –  SAND           RAIL – TRUE

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – W. Glass

Race 1: BARRY RICHARDSON MEMORIAL MAIDEN PLATE (1200m)

MUMMIFICATION – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

PIRATE SHIP – Presented late on course. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination inclusive of blood samples taken for analysis and passed fit to start. Trainer B. Waldron was subsequently reprimanded under the provisions of AR165(1) for presenting the gelding within the allocated arrival time. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted that it had been a genuine oversight on behalf of Mr Waldron and that the horse was stabled on course. Commenced to give ground from the 600m. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey J. Golden advised the gelding raced greenly throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

SQUAMISH – Began awkwardly.

Race 2: XXXX BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP (1200m)

KUDU – Began awkwardly. Shifted in near the 1000m when not clear of OAKFIELD TARGET, which was obliged to ease, before continuing into the line FROZEN PRINCE which was obliged to steady. Apprentice I. Jessop was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted that this was Apprentice Jessop’s first breach of the rule. Crowded rounding the home-turn when racing in restricted room.

OAKFIELD TARGET – Eased and shifted wider to avoid the heels of KUDU near the 1000m.

TURNSTAR – Reared on jumping and lost ground. When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice M. Mankelow stated that the poor start proved detrimental to its finishing efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

HEAT – Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Shifted in when not fully clear of FROZEN PRINCE passing the winning post which was obliged to ease. Jockey M. Butler was advised to exercise greater care.

BONNIE EV – Late scratching at 2:01pm when refusing to load. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on the mare to be refunded in full with the following deductions to apply to all successful wagers placed prior to 2:01pm:

9 cents for the win
10 cents for the place

Trainer W. Baker was subsequently advised given the mare’s recent poor history, that the mare would be required to obtain two consecutive further barrier certificates prior to racing again. Mr Baker advised that consideration would now be given to the mare’s immediate racing future, indicating it would most likely leave his stable.

NOTQUITELIKEJACK – Laid out rounding the home-turn.

FROZEN PRINCE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Steadied and shifted wider to avoid the heels of KUDU near the 1000m which shifted in.

AREYA TUCHUZY – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. When asked to comment on the apparent improved performance, Trainer W. Baker stated that the gelding had done well since arriving in his stable and had been pleasing in its work. He further added that the gelding had derived significant fitness benefit from its first-up run for the preparation at its previous start. Stewards noted the explanation.

Following the running of this race, Jockey M. Butler was examined by QAS officers before being deemed fit to fulfill his remaining engagements.

Race 3: HAHN 3.5 OPEN HANDICAP (1200m)

The running of this race was delayed approximately five minutes due to a barrier attendant requiring medical attention after the previous race.

MENINDEE – Laid in onto heels near the 200m becoming awkwardly placed for several strides.

PARKO – When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice J. Metcalfe stated that once the gelding was unable to obtain the lead in its usual manner, it failed to travel throughout the event and proved disappointing. She further added that the gelding was better suited when able to lead and dictate events which it was unable to do on this occasion.

HIDDEN EYES – When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice M. Mankelow reported that the gelding raced flat throughout the event and proved very disappointing. Trainer L. Baker expressed disappointment with the performance and stated that the stable had expected a forward showing. He further added that the gelding may not have handled the track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.

HANOVER SQUARE – Jockey M. Butler was permitted to ride 0.5kg over the allotted weight of 56kg. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

MAGICAL SLIPPER – Raced in restricted room rounding the home-turn. Carried wider passing the 1000m when HOLIDAY DREAMS laid out.

HOLIDAY DREAMS – Laid out passing the 100m before being corrected by its rider.

Race 4: JAMES SQUIRE QTIS BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP (1000m)

ABLETT – Bumped near the 700m when SAY WHEN SUTTY shifted out. Raced keenly for some distance thereafter.

TATTLE – Raced keenly in the early stages.

SAVVY SONG – When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey J. Missen advised that the gelding, which was first-up for the preparation would derive a significant fitness benefit.

TAKERU – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

DEEP MYSTIQUE – Slow to begin. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event.

ONE TUNE – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid out rounding the home-turn. When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice C. Stuart could offer no explanation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off-hindleg consistent with being galloped on.

SAY WHEN SUTTY – Bumped passing the 700m.

ONE LAST TRICK – Laid out rounding the home-turn.

WHITE CHOCOLATE – Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. Carried wider rounding the home-turn when ONE LAST TRICK laid out.

KARAKAROO – Slow to begin.

Race 5: WHITE CLAW BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP (1640m)

BENDOLIRRA – Raced wide and without cover in the early and middle stages. Shifted in passing the 1400m, directing HE’S VIRAL inwards and as result tightening SAINT MARTIN which was obliged to ease when racing in restricted room, before bumping HE’S VIRAL when that runner attempted to shift out. Apprentice I. Jessop was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a) for careless riding. In assessing the matter, Stewards noted that SAINT MARTIN had been racing keenly leading into the incident.

PACKAGE – Began awkwardly. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

SAINT MARTIN – Raced keenly in the early stages. Eased and tightened for room before becoming unbalanced and bumping the running rail when HE’S VIRAL was carried inwards for several strides passing the 1400m.

HE’S VIRAL (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Bumped and carried inwards passing the 1400m when BENDOLIRRA shifted in. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey L. Miller stated that the gelding resented kick-back when racing on a sand surface on this occasion, and subsequently failed to travel comfortably throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery.
