From SCTC, 23.8.09 – Race 6
An inquiry was opened into Jockey K. Pope’s use of the whip on COLD TRICKLE in race 6 at the above meeting. After taking evidence from jockey Pope and viewing the stewards’ patrol footage, stewards were of the opinion that at point leaving the 200m jockey Pope used his whip in 3 consecutive strides, as permitted within the rules. Stewards also had concerns about his use of the whip from a point leaving the 150m. Stewards were satisfied with the explanation tendered by K. Pope.
Race 1: Caloundra RSL CG&E Maiden H'cap - 1100m
1st – Matai 2nd – Harney 3rd – Maali 4th - Zadkiel
After being notified by the Judge that the photo finish image was unclear, correct weight was delayed to allow the stewards to verify the Judge’s semaphored placings of:
6 – MATAI 1 – HARNEY 5 – MAALI 4 – JOVIAL JOKE 7 – COUNT FERGUS.
After viewing the stewards patrol film, and acting under the provisions of AR156(1), stewards amended the placings to:
6 – MATAI 1 – HARNEY 5 – MAALI 3 – ZADKIEL 7 – COUNT FERGUS
MAALI (S. Katsidis) began awkwardly.
LEN’S GIFT (K. Sawyers) began awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with MATAI (K. Pope).
HARNEY (A. Pattillo) hung out from leaving the 800m until approaching the home turn.
Near the 150m, ZADKIEL (J. Murphy) had to be momentarily steadied when MATAI shifted in under pressure.
Approaching the winning post, MATAI jumped a shadow on the track.
MAALI, LEN’S GIFT and UNCLE RONNIE (J. Taylor) raced wide throughout.
Race 2: Win Television Class 2 H'cap - 2150m
1st – Prince Telesto 2nd – Elton’s Son 3rd – Real World 4th – Sigurd
On jumping away, STRAIGHT SHOOTING (B. Pengelly) was tightened for room between ROOM TWO SISTER (B. Stewart) and LEFT HOOK (K. Pope), which shifted out.
LEFT HOOK (K. Pope) shifted out abruptly in the straight when placed under pressure, placing its rider at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of LEFT HOOK revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore knee. Trainer M. Mair was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for LEFT HOOK prior to its next race start.
B. Stewart, rider of ROOM TWO SISTER, was reprimanded for striking his horse on 2 occasions more than permitted under the rules between the 400m and 200m.
When questioned regarding his failure to ride ROOM TWO SISTER right out to the finish of the race, B. Stewart stated he was concerned that there may have been something amiss with the horse and that it was making an abnormal noise. A post-race veterinary examination of ROOM TWO SISTER revealed the horse to be sore in the near fore fetlock. It had also sustained an injury to the off fore tendon, and was suffering from thumps. B. Stewart was then advised of his obligations to report to the stewards immediately following the race any concerns he has regarding his mounts which he feels may have had a bearing on the performance. Trainer J. Fleming was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for ROOM TWO SISTER prior to its next race start.
Race 3: Sunshine Coast Daily Maiden Plate – 1600m
1st – Moringa’s King 2nd – Kalinga Echo 3rd – Sobo 4th – Little Pigen
NO SHACKLES (G. Geran) was tightened for room at the start between SOBO (S. Katsidis) and KALINGA ECHO (S. Kennedy), which shifted out.
Shortly after the start, MORINGA’S KING (J. Byrne) was tightened for room between MANINGREY (K. Sawyers) and MISTER TATT, which shifted in.
Approaching the 1200m, SERAYER (M. Hughes) was tightened for room between MANINGREY (K. Sawyers) and SOBO (S. Katsidis), which shifted in.
Jockey S. Katsidis, rider of SOBO, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 1200m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of SERAYER (M. Hughes), resulting in SERAYER having to be checked and lose its rightful position. S. Katsidis was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 6 meetings, to commence at midnight, 1 September and to expire at midnight, 10 September 2009.
SOBO raced wide in the early and middle stages.
Passing the 1000m, BEAR THE CROSS (M. Abe) shifted out and as a result SERAYER (M. Hughes) had to be momentarily steadied and shifted shift in, resulting in NO SHACKLES (G. Geran) being inconvenienced.
MISTER TATT (A. Spinks) raced wide from leaving the 800m.
Approaching the home turn, SERAYER shifted out abruptly, resulting in M. Hughes becoming unbalanced.
MORINGA’S KING had a tendency to lay in under pressure from the 200m.
Near the 150m, BEAR THE CROSS and NO SHACKLES bumped.
Race 4:Hot 91 QTIS 3yo Maiden H'cap – 1400m
1st – Ten Flutes 2nd – Christark 3rd – First Lieutenant 4th – Sunday Belle
Trainer T. Hall was fined $100 for presenting CHRISTARK to the enclosure without blinkers.
A warning was placed on FIRST LIEUTENANT, which proved difficult to load.
SUNDAYS GIRL (N. Thomas) was slow to begin.
SUNDAY BELLE (K. Pope) and FIRST LIEUTENANT (J. Byrne) came together and bumped on jumping away.
FIRST LIEUTENANT was inclined to overrace in the early stages.
Apprentice M. O’Brien, rider of TEN FLUTES, was fined $100 for returning to scale in excess of half a kilogram over her declared riding weight.
Race 5: Reed Property Group Class 1 H'cap – 1400m
1st – Demonstrator 2nd – In Sha Tin 3rd – Lunch In The Sun 4th – Luvenger
VIGORLIC was declared a late scratching at 3.11 pm on veterinary advice after the horse anticipated the start and lunged forward, striking its head in the barriers. Subsequent to the event all monies invested on VIGORLIC were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 13 cents in the dollar on the face value of win bets, 12 cents in the dollar on the face value of place bets. Trainer J. McLachlan was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for VIGORLIC prior to its next race start.
POINCIANA (M. Wood) and NAKAMURA HIROFUMI (A. Spinks) were slow to begin.
App. M. Speers, rider of BE GLORIOUS, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts right out to the finish line.
ASHLAND (D. Gill) and LUVENGER (A. Pattillo) raced wide throughout.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of POINCIANA, trainer R. Bradshaw stated that at its most recent start at Eagle Farm he had removed the hoof pads and this may have contributed to its disappointing performance. Mr Bradshaw then subsequently chose to put the hoof pads back on for today’s race, however was unable to offer any explanation for today’s performance. Mr Bradshaw undertook to report back to stewards any abnormality which may become apparent that may have had a bearing on today’s race. A post-race veterinary examination of POINCIANA failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 6: Select Bathroom & Plumbing Centre F&M H'cap - 1100m
1st –Anabaa Force 2nd – Millsie Moo 3rd – Likaphantom 4th – Mon Trist
ON TILT (M. Hellyer) was slow to begin.
MISS IRONSIDE (A. Pattillo) began awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with HENZELITE (N. Thomas).
Shortly after the start MILLSIE MOO (S. Drake) and BLUEBERRY MALT (M. Heagney) made contact.
OUR GIRL GIGGLES (A. Spinks) was momentarily held up for clear running leaving the 500m.
MISS IRONSIDE (A. Pattillo) had a tendency to lay in under pressure from the 300m.
MISS IRONSIDE raced wide for the majority of the event.
A post-race veterinary examination of ON TILT, which finished a distant last, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stewards intend to confirm a change in S. Holcombe’s minimum riding weight.
Race 7:Sky Racing Class 5 H'cap - 1400m
1st – Guilty Conscience 2nd – Maximiss 3rd – Monte Primo 4th – Guns
Correct weight was delayed to allow S. Drake, rider of the 2nd placegetter, MAXIMISS, the opportunity to view the film over the concluding stages to ascertain if she had grounds for protest against the winner. Subsequently Miss Drake did not wish to proceed with a protest.
MAXIMISS (S. Drake), which was slow to begin, was then hampered when racing between GUNS (S. Katsidis), which shifted out, and STAR TOUCH (I. Coombes), which shifted in.
MAXIMISS commenced to overrace leaving the 1200m and had to be steadied from the heels of GUILTY CONSIENCE (M. Radecker). MAXIMISS then commenced to overrace for a short distance.
Over the concluding stages, MAXIMISS raced in restricted room between GUILTY CONSCIENCE (M. Radecker), which had a tendency to shift out under pressure, and MONTE PRIMO (C. Kearney), which had a tendency to shift in under pressure, which resulted in MAXIMISS having to be steadied nearing the finish line.
SEEKAWINNER (D. Gill) raced 3 wide throughout.
Stewards questioned I. Coombes regarding the tactics adopted on STAR TOUCH. He stated that his instructions were not to engage in a speed battle, and he was also advised that if STAR TOUCH was over-restrained it has had tendencies to get its head up and overrace. I. Coombes added in the early stages he attempted to restrain STAR TOUCH however the horse resented this, and he elected to allow his mount to improve its position and take up the lead, which has been consistent with its recent racing pattern.
Race 8: Yalumba Class 4 H'cap - 1000m
1st – Krugerrand 2nd – Arhondas 3rd – Scent Of Gold 4th – Whimpy
KRUGERRAND (D. Browne) was tightened for room at the start between ARHONDAS (M. Speers) and SWEET SASSI (N. Thomas), which was taken out by ADJOURNMENT (B. Payne).
WHIMPY (G. Butler) began awkwardly.
Approaching the 800m, THE TADPOLE ANGEL (M. Hellyer) and WHIMPY (G. Butler) raced in restricted room to the inside of SWEET SASSI (N. Thomas), which was inclined to lay in for a short distance.
SHE’S GOT GAME (M. Heagney) raced wide throughout.
