GENERAL
As apprentice B. Appo was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
A number of riders underwent breath analysis prior to taking their rides.
Race 1: SHADFORTHS MAIDEN PLATE - 1600m
BLESS THIS ROSE (J. Stanley) and GRAZIO (B. Wallace) both jumped away awkwardly, making contact, and as a result lost ground.
Near the 1200m JOLOKIA (J. Byrne) shifted out and made contact with PETRONI (E. Wilkinson).
Near the 1000m DEKARNAGE (A. Merritt) shifted out, forcing I’M A GENEE (G. Goold) wider for a short distance before I’M A GENEE was restrained and was able to shift back to a one-off position.
Near the 350m DEKARNAGE was inconvenienced when forced to race in restricted room between I’M A GENEE and JOLOKIA which shifted out.
Stewards questioned apprentice L. Tarrant and owner D. Denman, in the presence of Mr Tarrant’s master F. Phillips, regarding the tactics adopted on JOSHUA’S MIGHT. Of particular concern to stewards was apprentice Tarrant’s failure to attempt to take up a forward position when it appeared in the early stages that there was an opportunity for him to ride aggressively and obtain a forward position closer to the fence. Apprentice Tarrant stated that he had been instructed, in light of the perceived lack of speed in the event, to take up a forward position, which he endeavoured to do, however when it became apparent approaching the 1200m that he was to be caught wide, he elected to restrain and was forced to continue doing so until approaching the 800m to secure a position closer to the fence at the tail of the field. Stewards advised apprentice Tarrant that in their opinion he had erred in failing to make a greater effort during the first 400m, after beginning well, to ride his horse vigorously to take up a more forward position. They conceded that at a point near the 1400m he was unable to obtain a position closer to the fence due to not being clear of PETRONI (E. Wilkinson) and it was at this point they believed he should have again ridden more vigorously to improve his position in an attempt to cross PETRONI. Stewards further added that, when caught in a three wide position, he would have been better served remaining wide and in a forward position, rather than restrain and lose significant ground some 8 lengths from the leader. Given the circumstances and the instructions issued, stewards, taking into account apprentice Tarrant’s relative inexperience, elected not to take any further action other than to draw this ride to the attention of the Rider Review Panel, which Mr Tarrant has been directed to attend, stemming from a prior race meeting.
Apprentice R. Ride (GOGERTY) was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip in a backhand manner.
Race 2: MCNALLY FAMILY MAIDEN PLATE – 1200m
LARGELY (R. McMahon), which refused to be loaded, was declared a late scratching at 1.11 pm. Trainer J. Pritchard was advised that LARGELY must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial prior to being permitted to start again. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on LARGELY be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
5 cents in the dollar for the Win #10
4 cents in the dollar for place of winner #10
20 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #5
7 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #1
FALVINA (J. Stanley) reared as the start was effected and lost significant ground.
KING OF JACKS (V. Venkaya) raced greenly in the early stages.
When the pace slackened leaving the 800m STATUE BRO (S. Lanigan) was steadied after improving on to the heels of RAPT IN SECRECY (D. McWhinney) and shifted wider on the track, forcing UNDERCOVER SECRET (D. Green) wider. Both horses then raced wide for the remainder of the event.
Stewards questioned D. McWhinney (RAPT IN SECRECY) regarding his tactics adopted in the early stages after it appeared he had opportunity to improve to a position outside the lead rather restrain and be caught wide. Apprentice McWhinney stated that he had been reluctant to assume a forward position as he did not wish to get into a speed battle with Mr Bown’s stablemate JAYNNAH (A. Taylor). Stewards advised apprentice McWhinney that in their opinion he had erred and that in similar circumstances when the pace is only steady, he would be expected to show greater initiative and allow his horse to stride forward to take up a position closer to the fence.
Race 3: IMPACT OFFICE SUPPLIES QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1000m
Following a report from jockey K. Yoshida that a piece of rubbish was on the track near the 300m, a Clerk of the Course was sent from the start to investigate. This caused a lengthy delay and as a result the start of this race was pushed back some 4 minutes.
LIKE THIS (A. Taylor) was slow to begin.
ZA RAPPER (R. Ride), which was slow to begin, was further hampered when SIMPLY CHANEL (L. Tarrant) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.
Leaving the 600m SIRARDI (T. Bell) shifted out and in doing so inconvenienced ZA RAPPER, forcing that horse and SIMPLY CHANEL wider on the track. A short distance later ZA RAPPER improved on to the heels of DRAGON MASTER (C. Schmidt) and had to be restrained. As a result of this ZA RAPPER shifted wider on the track, forcing SIMPLY CHANEL extremely wide on the track
MUSCOVY (E. Wilkinson), DRAGON MASTER (C. Schmidt) and EXCEEDINGLY FINE (K. Yoshida) all raced wide without cover throughout.
Approaching the 400m DRAGON MASTER, after being held up for clear running, shifted wider on the track whilst being inclined to hang out, inconveniencing both ZA RAPPER and SIMPLY CHANEL. Apprentice Schmidt (DRAGON MASTER) was advised to show greater effort to ensure her horses do not shift ground in similar circumstances.
Stewards afforded A. Coome the opportunity to comment on the performance of PRICELESS HEART. He stated that from the wide barrier he had been instructed to ride the horse in a position back in the field. He added that at a point leaving the 800m, when steadied to shift across heels, the gelding settled better than he had expected and he was obliged to pressure the horse until leaving the 600m in order to hold a position at the tail of the field. He further added that as the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages, it was his opinion that it would benefit from a step up in distance.
Race 4: BUSH TO BEACH CLEANING SERVICES CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1000m
HEEZA BONZA (T. Jeffries) was slow to begin.
SURF FIRE (J. Byrne) and STARS ARE BORN (K. Yoshida) bumped on jumping away.
Shortly after the start RAISE YOUR BANNER (A. Allen) was tightened for room between ABBALAC (M. Crawford), which was taken in by DESTINY’S ANGEL (L. Tarrant), and TAINO (M. Morris), which was taken out by WHAT A SENSATION (R. Ride), which in turn had been taken out by BABY RASY (T. Bell).
AROUND THE LEGS (E. Wilkinson), STARS ARE BORN and NUG’S POCKET (M. Cahill) all raced wide without cover throughout.
Near the 400m SURF FIRE was steadied when forced to race in restricted room between NUG’S POCKET and DESTINY’S ANGEL, which shifted out.
STARS ARE BORN laid in under pressure in the home straight.
M. Crawford (ABBALAC) was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip in a backhand manner.
Race 5: HI-WAY TRUCK AND TRACTOR CLASS 3 PLATE - 2200m
AUBAINE BEL (J. Hoopert), TELLINTAIMZ (L. Tarrant) and VICTORIA STREET (A. Allen) were all slow to begin.
After passing the winning post on the first occasion AUBAINE BEL was steadied to avoid the heels of ONE LAST WHIFF (C. Schmidt), which shifted in. KYZYLKUM (G. Goold), which was following, was obliged to steady as a result. Apprentice Schmidt was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
Nearing and passing the 1700m TELLINTAIMZ overraced and when restrained raced ungenerously with its head in the air for a short distance.
TAX REBATE (J. Byrne) laid in under pressure in the home straight.
A post-race veterinary examination of JACOBUS (C. McIver) revealed the gelding to be making an abnormal respiratory noise and to have a delayed recovery post-race. Trainer M. Kropp was advised that he must produce the results of an endoscopic examination for JACOBUS prior to the horse starting again.
Race 6: STEULER KCH BM80 H’CAP - 1200m
MODERN AL (L. Tarrant) was slow to begin.
Apprentice G. Goold reported to stewards that he was disappointed with the performance of TEN TO ZERO, adding that he was under pressure from the 500m and when under pressure in the home straight the gelding laid in and away from CRYON (B. Looker).
When questioned as to the disappointing performance of HUNDRED CUBE, E. Wilkinson stated that the gelding failed to travel comfortably at any stage of the event and in his opinion may have failed to handle the prevailing track conditions. Trainer S. Mackinnon agreed with the comments of jockey Wilkinson and added that in his opinion HUNDRED CUBE did not see out today’s distance of 1200m and was also up in class. Mr Mackinnon stated that he would therefore attempt to place HUNDRED CUBE in a race of lesser class over 1000m at its next start and undertook to advise stewards should anything come to light in the days following which may explain the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of HUNDRED CUBE revealed no significant findings.
Race 7: RUGS N RATS PEST CONTROL & CARPET CLEANING CLASS 2 H’CAP - 1200m
VICTORVETO, which kicked out behind, getting its near hind leg caught in the rear barrier gates, was declared a late scratching at 4.06 pm on veterinary advice that the horse was lame. Trainer P. Jenkins was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for VICTORVETO prior to its next start. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on VICTORVETO be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
28 cents in the dollar for the Win #5
24 cents in the dollar for place of winner #5
26 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #7
26 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #6
HI HI (A. Merritt) was slow to begin.
ASPY BAY, which laid in throughout, shifted in near the 700m tightening the running of SINE TIMORE (T. Bell).
BUNDU BOY (K. Yoshida) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and was disappointed for a run shortly after entering the home straight between TORCELLO (E. Wilkinson) and ASPY BAY (A. Allen), which shifted out.
A post-race veterinary examination of ASPY BAY revealed hind limb lameness. Trainer T. White was advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for ASPY BAY prior to its next start.
Race 8: XL INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES CLASS 1 H’CAP - 1400m
ROYAL SAVIVRE (M. McKenzie), HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN (J. Byrne) and WESTS TIGERS (B. Looker), were slow to begin.
Approaching the 600m ROYAL SAVIVRE improved where there was doubtful room to the inside of HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN and had to be restrained.
Approaching the home turn ROYAL SAVIVRE again had to be restrained when attempting to secure clear running to the outside of HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN which shifted out.
Leaving the 400m HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN shifted out to secure clear running and in doing so forced both MELATTE (K. Wharton) and BROTHER LOVE (T. Bell) wider on the track, causing both horses to be inconvenienced. J. Byrne (HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN) was reprimanded for his actions in this incident.
Stewards questioned trainer D. Heinemann regarding the improved performance of HALLSIDE SHOWDOWN. He stated that at its most recent start the gelding overraced in the early stages and this had a detrimental effect on the overall performance. He also added that today’s distance of 1400m was more suited to the horse’s racing pattern and he had expected a forward showing.
