She stated she was of the opinion that the horse would be better suited over more ground and she attempted to settle in the second half of the field. However she believed it did not muster sufficient early speed to take up that position and settled at the tail of the field. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be sore over the rump.

Of concern were her actions in shifting wider on the track near the 600m, which afforded the eventual winner MR JETSET a position to her inside when it appeared she was occupying a favourable position just behind the lead one off the fence, and again her reasons for shifting wider rounding the home turn and affording MR JETSET a run to her inside at that point. Miss Grylls indicated that near the 600m when 2 runners improved to her outside she was concerned that she would be pocketed and therefore steadied and shifted wider as she felt this would enable her to improve into the race when rounding the home turn. She added that when shifting out to obtain clear running she shifted further than intended and allowed that room to her inside. Stewards, after considering the evidence, were of the view that they could not accept the explanation tendered by B. Grylls and were of the view she had erred in shifting out near the 600m and would have been better served remaining in a position one off the fence behind the leaders, however stewards were not satisfied that this error was so unreasonable to hold her culpable under the rules given her status as an apprentice and therefore took no further action.

Apprentice Hearn was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings, to commence at midnight, 13 December and to expire at midnight, 26 December. App. T.
