MESTALLA – Stewards questioned jockey R. Wiggins and stable representative Mr S. Jones regarding the performance of the horse. In particular, jockey Wiggins was questioned as to his positioning of the gelding as the horse has an established racing pattern to be in the forward half of the field, and despite this jockey Wiggins appeared to steady at the start to take up a position at the tail of the field. He explained that shortly after the start he was dictated by Sunset Raider which forced him in and caused him to make the decision to take up a rearward position as he had been given no specific instructions other than to have the horse travel comfortably. Stable representative S. Jones confirmed that he had given no specific instructions other than to have the horse travel comfortably however he had expected the horse to be in the forward half of the field, and was surprised that the horse was settled at the tail of the field. He also added that the gelding had been entered for an 1800m event last week, which was called off, he was of the view that this may have left the horse slightly underdone for todays event. Stewards advised jockey Wiggins that after reviewing the patrol footage and given the horse’s racing history they were not entirely satisfied with his explanation and informed him that a review of the betting surrounding Mestalla would be undertaken. Post race vet inspection revealed that the horse had a slower then normal recovery rate.
