SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From SCTC, 5.5.16 – Race 5

Trainer T. Bourke reported that veterinary tests performed on Drumbeat’s Choice subsequent to this race found the horse to be showing signs of a virus and had undergone treatment. He advised stewards he would have the results of blood tests provided prior to its next start to clear the horse to race.

______________________________

Race 1: South East Civil Pty Ltd Maiden Plate – 1000m

FAST CHOICE – Underwent a veterinary examination prior to the start of this event and was cleared to race. Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey J. Lloyd indicated as the horse was having its first start and had not shown early speed in its barrier trial, he was instructed to settle his mount where comfortable and after travelling well responded to his riding in the home straight and was doing its best work over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination revealed signs of lameness in the near foreleg. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to its next race start.

LITTLE REGION – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with another runner.

LE JEU – Steadied from heels near the 600m.

JACK ATTACK – Raced wide.

KULABA – Apprentice S. Eilbeck reported her mount laid out in the home straight.

SPARKLING TIARA – Raced wide without cover.

PLAIN TRUTH – Trainer K. McLeod reported that the horse got its tongue over the bit and would now experiment with the addition of a tongue-tie.

Race 2: Sunfreight Pty Ltd QTIS 2yo H'cap – 1000m

RAINY DAY WOMAN– Declared a late scratching at 10.40 am.

SEE MIRACLES – Trainer C. Anderson was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time. Raced wide. Trainer reported that the horse would now be sent for a spell.

THE CANDY MAN – As jockey R. McMahon’s arrival on course was delayed, D. Griffin was substituted as the rider of the horse. When asked to comment on the performance of the horse, jockey Griffin indicated his mount raced quite greenly in the early and middle stages after he had been instructed to allow the horse to settle out of the barriers. He indicated that, in his opinion, the gelding finished the race off strongly despite laying in form the 400m onwards. He added that trainer Mr B. Baldwin suggested he would now look to spell the horse

GLIMMERING WORLD – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with another runner. When asked to comment on the performance of the horse, jockey T. Harrison advised that it raced very greenly in the early stages and made the home turn awkwardly, however when placed under pressure in the home straight responded well and was doing its best work over the concluding stages and felt the horse would appreciate a step up in distance to 1200m.

MR BON VIVANT – Bumped by another runner at the start. Raced wide.

DRUMS JEWEL – Slow to begin. Bumped by another runner near the 800m.

ROYAL ATOM – Slow to begin.

TYCOON ROSSA – Steadied near the 800m to avoid the heels of REAL CUTIE, which shifted in and in doing so made contact with another runner.

GESSNER – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

AQUAJEWEL – Hung out from the 600m until the home straight. Raced wide.

Race 3: Ladies Oaks Day May 27 Winter Provincial Stayers Series –
Heat 2 – Benchmark 75 H'cap – 2200m

LEVER LEVER – When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice J. Orman indicated that, in his opinion, the horse was disappointing and felt the race was had not been run to suit him in that he was obliged to pressure the horse from the 600m in an attempt to chase the tearaway leader, MR LIGHTNING. He indicated that this, in conjunction with carrying 59 kilograms on the soft racing surface, did not suite the horse. He felt these factors contributed to the disappointing performance. Trainer Mr M. Dunn advised stewards that he agreed that the race was not run to suit LEVER LEVER and that this may have contributed to the performance. Stewards will follow up with Mr Dunn in the coming days as to how the horse has recovered from today’s race. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

MR LIGHTNING/OUTSTRIP – Stewards inquired into the handling of both MR LIGHTNING (T. Harrison) and OUTSTRIP (R. McMahon). Evidence was taken from both riders and trainer Mr B. Herne. Stewards expressed concern with Miss Harrison’s riding in that she established a substantial lead away from the second horse in the event during the early and middle stages, and questioned her as to whether the tempo being set was significant, and as to whether this may have been an advantage to the stablemate, OUTSTRIP. Miss Harrison advised stewards that her mount is a known leader and she had been instructed to lead. She stated that after beginning only fairly she obtained the lead without having to overly pressure the horse, and when passing the 1900m attempted to steady and at this stage the gelding resented this. She indicated she allowed the horse to stride again until near the 1600m when she again endeavoured to steady her mount. Despite her actions, the horse was inclined to overrace though she felt she was able to steady the tempo somewhat when passing the 1300m, and was satisfied with the sectionals she was able to set until the 800m. Jockey Harrison indicated that from the 600m she attempted to allow the horse to stride again in order create a further break from the remainder of the field, and given that the horse overraced as it did, she was satisfied with the gelding’s finishing effort. R. McMahon advised stewards that he had been instructed to take up the horse’s customary trailing position and when asked in relation to the tactics adopted on the stablemate, MR LIGHTNING, he indicated that whilst he was not privy to the instructions he had anticipated that the horse would lead the race though he did not feel that MR LIGHTNING establishing a significant lead was to his mount’s benefit as this caused him to pressure his mount to improve after leaving the 800m. Trainer B. Herne agreed that MR LIGHTNING had overraced in the early stages and he had not anticipated the gelding establishing such a substantial lead. Stewards noted the comments, however advised that further inquiries will be made with various betting agencies.

Race 4: Hot 91 Ladies Oaks Day May 27 Class 4 H'cap – 1300m

SAVANNAH DREAM – When the pace slackened near the 1000m improved on to heels and had to be steadied.

MORE ENERGY – Had to be steadied approaching the 500m when placed in restricted room to the inside of MONSTER OF ENERGY , which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.

ARCTIC – Slow to begin. Apprentice M. Murphy advised stewards that it had not been his intention to lead, however after being caught wide in the early stages he allowed the horse to stride forward and take up a position outside the lead passing the 800m.

Race 5: Pryde’s Easifeed Pty Ltd Maiden H'cap – 1400m

WHAT’S THAT – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with another runner. Jockey T. Harrison reported that after being slow to begin the horse was able to muster sufficient pace to take up a position just behind the lead and travelled keenly to the 800m, and despite weakening over the concluding stages was of the view that the horse would appreciate a step up in distance where it would be able to take up a forward position without being pressured in the early stages.

DUKE OF CHRISTOPHE – Bumped by another runner at the start.

OUR CEE BEE – Raced wide without cover.

THORNETT – Stewards asked jockey P. Hammersley to explain his actions after passing the 900m when he steadied and allowed BEL CLASSICO to take up a position forward of him behind the lead. He indicated he felt the horse was not travelling strong enough to hold a position behind the lead and felt he would be better served steadying and allowing jockey Thomas, rider of BEL CLASSICO, to cross at this stage of the race.

Race 6: South East Civil Pty Ltd Class H'cap – 1600m

MISHANI SCOUT – Raced wide in the early stages.

TUMBLING AL – Overraced when the pace was only steadied passing the 1300m.

SLALOM – Overraced in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward to the lead passing the 1000m.

PASSION IN FLIGHT - Stewards questioned jockey T. Harrison and trainer Mr G. Hineman regarding the tactics adopted on the horse in that the horse raced on the speed in today’s race which was in contrast to the horse’s established racing pattern. Miss Harrison indicated it had not been her intention to lead, however after beginning well she allowed the horse to stride forward and cross horses to the inside. Trainer Mr G Hineman indicated he had instructed Miss Harrison to ride the horse where comfortable as she knows the horse’s racing pattern and was surprised the horse was in a forward position. Stewards after viewing Miss Harrison’s actions during the early stages were satisfied with the explanation tendered and took no further action.

UNASSUMING – Apprentice L. Attard reported he was disappointed with the performance of the horse and settled closer in the race than he had anticipated, however could not offer any explanation for the performance.

Race 7: Sunfreight Pty Ltd Class 1 H'cap – 1200m

CIRCUIT BREAKER – Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Rider reported the horse laid out under pressure in the home straight.

POETIC SHOW – Slow to begin.

RICH TRADITION – Raced wide for the majority of the race.

Race 8: Pryde’s Easifeed Pty Ltd Class 2 H'cap – 1400m

ESTEEMED ELEGANCE – Slow to begin.

MONACO PLAYBOY – When questioned regarding the tactics when caught wide in the early stages and whether he had an opportunity in the back straight to improve to a position outside the lead, he indicated that when caught 3 wide he endeavoured to steady and come back to cross behind the leaders closer to the fence, however when unable to perform this manoeuvre he considered improving outside LEGAL COUNSEL, however as the rider of that horse was still placing pressure on his mount to remain outside the lead, he did not feel the horse was travelling well enough to cross that gelding and therefore allowed his mount to settle 3 wide and travel in that position for the remainder of the race.

CUSHY NUMBER: Stewards questioned both T Harrison and trainer B Hull regarding the tactics adopted in that the horse led in todays event which is in contast to the manner in which it has been ridden at its most resent starts. Mr Hull indicated that as the horse has led over a similar distance during its last preparation he did not feel that there had been a change in tactics. He also added that similar instructions had been issued at the most recent start however CUSHY NUMBER had failed to must sufficient early speed to take up a forward position. Stewards advised Mr Hull that, whilst they noted his explanation, in similar circumstances he would be required to notify stewards of his intentions.
