BELLA SASH – Shifted out near the 300m to secure clear running and in doing so made contact with another runner.

Race 2: Brad Read Design Group Maiden Plate – 1600m

LITTLE MISS MONACO – As R. McMahon’s failed to arrive on course in time, apprentice M. Murphy was substituted as the rider of the horse. Jockey R. McMahon was fined $100. Connections advised that the horse would be ridden more forward if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. The start of the race was delayed when the mare broke through the barriers. The horse was quickly restrained, underwent a veterinary examination and cleared to take its place in the field.

TEQUILA LOVE – Slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination of the horse, which finished a distant last, revealed it was lame in the near foreleg. Trainer B. Snelling was advised that he must provide a veterinary certificate for the horse and that it must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

PUT THE ROPE AWAY – When the pace was only steady passing the 1200m and the horse was overracing, apprentice J. Orman allowed his mount to stride forward and take up the lead passing the 800m.

OUR GIRL CHARLOTTE – Had difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight, and was tightened for room near the 200m and as a result had to be checked.

MAJOR BO – Raced wide throughout. Stewards questioned jockey B. Pengelly regarding the tactics adopted as to why he remained in a 3 wide position, when It appeared he had opportunity to improve forward and take up a position closer to the fence, however he elected to restrain and remain in a 3 wide position. He explained that near the 1200m he improved outside LITTLE MISS MONACO and at this point the rider of that mare appeared to allow his mount to stride more forward. He was of the view that the rider would allow the horse to cross the horse to the inside and take up the lead, which would enable MAJOR BO to follow that horse across and assume a position one off the fence outside the lead. He indicated however that when he made this decision the rider of LITTLE MISS MONACO then appeared to steady and as the field was now approaching the 1000m, he felt asking the horse to produce a second effort to would be detrimental to the horse’s chances. Stewards, after viewing the patrol footage, accepted jockey Pengelly’s explanation. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have been galloped on on the off hind leg.

Race 3: Inproperty Developments Ratings Band 0-70 H'cap – 1600m

WHAKATANE – Raced wide throughout and overraced in the early stages. Apprentice S. Lacy reported she had been instructed to ride her mount in the second half of the field with cover if possible.
