Race 1: DONOR FAMILIES AUSTRALIA MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
EMPEROR’S BEACH – Due to having had a significant spell subsequent to its last start, the horse underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to take its place in the field. Tightened for room on jumping and forced inwards.
INTERVENTIONS – Apprentice S. Lacy reported that her mount laid out under pressure in the home straight.
ACE STRYKER – Jumped awkwardly, shifted in and made heavy contact with another runner. Overraced and had to be steadied from heels near the 900m.
CHIC SALE – Reared on jumping and was then obliged to check shortly after the start when severely tightened for room. Taken wider rounding the home turn.
MO TUCKER – Shifted out on jumping and made heavy contact with another runner. Taken wider rounding the home turn.
TACTICAL MANUEVER – An inquiry was opened into the reasons for the horse striking the running rail and falling after the winning post, dislodging apprentice A. Sewell. As a result of the fall, apprentice Sewell was taken to hospital for observation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be sore in the off hind leg. Trainer R. Davidson was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance and must trial satisfactorily prior to its next start.
Race 2: THE RENDER CENTRE MAIDEN PLATE – 1600M
The start of this race was delayed as a second ambulance was required to transport apprentice A. Sewell to hospital.
COLLEGIATE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Stewards questioned apprentice M. Murphy and G. Colless regarding the pace set in the first 1000m. Apprentice Murphy indicated that he had been instructed to lead and after taking up a leading position he steadied his mount and this allowed ZARABEEL (G. Colless) to improve forward of him and establish the lead. He indicated that he had not wished his mount to be held up behind other runners and therefore he elected to shift wider passing the 1000m and settle outside the lead. Both riders indicated they were satisfied with the early tempo which had been set. After considering the evidence, stewards advised apprentice Murphy that in similar circumstances, after having been instructed to lead and having obtained the lead, he would have been better served allowing the horse to stride and maintain the lead rather than steady and allow ZARABEEL to cross near the 1300m. He was advised that in the opinion of the stewards he had erred, however given his status as an apprentice, no further action was taken. Apprentice M. Murphy was reprimanded for using the whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.
MUSHIN – Rider dismounted after passing the winning post. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer C. Jordan was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to its next start. B. Stewart was reprimanded for using the whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.
RAUCOUS – Raced three wide without cover.
SIR ROTHEWAY – Jumped away awkwardly and bumped another runner.
SWIPPA DA MOUSE – Jumped away awkwardly and bumped another runner. Raced greenly in the home straight, made contact with the running rail near the 350m and continued to race greenly for the remainder of the event.
ZARABEEL – Raced wide in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward to the lead passing the 1200m.
SHARP SPEEDO – Raced wide from the 850m. Stewards asked L. Cassidy to comment on the tactics he adopted on the horse, which settled at the tail of the field, and as to whether he had opportunity to improve when the leaders had established a significant margin on the remainder of the field. He indicated that from the 1100m he became aware of the margin which had been established and looked to improve on the back of RAUCOUS in a three-wide position from the 800m. He indicated that when this horse was under pressure and unable to improve its position, he elected to shift out from approaching the 600m to a four-wide position in order to make up ground. The explanation was accepted.
Race 3: CLARK’S GARAGE QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1000M
The start of this race was delayed when GLIMMERING WORLD became fractious and underwent a veterinary inspection.
The start was further delayed when, due to a power failure, the electronic start mechanism failed and a number of horses lunged at the barriers, resulting in NATURAL BLACK prematurely opening its barrier and cantering a short distance. The gelding then underwent a veterinary inspection and was cleared to take its place in the field. Shortly afterwards, GLIMMERING WORLD again was fractious and became cast in the barriers. GLIMMERING WORLD underwent a veterinary inspection and was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 1:31 pm. Stewards ordered that all monies invested on GLIMMERING WORLD be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
2 cents in the dollar for the Win #1
2 cents in the dollar for place of winner #1
3 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #14
4 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #2
The start of this event was started manually. Subsequent to the event the barriers were tested on a number of occasions and found to be functioning appropriately.
PARK CHINOIS – Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
THE REAL SPIEL – Hung out rounding the home turn.
TUTOKANULA – Raced four wide without cover. Lost the off hind plate in running.
FIRESTAR PHOENIX – Raced wide throughout. Raced greenly after passing the 600m and lost ground.
HONOUR PROMISE – Raced wide without cover.
RANEN – Refused to jump and took no competitive part in the event.
Race 4: DONATE LIFE CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1000M
SMOOTHNAVIGATOR – Slow to begin. Apprentice S. Lacy reported that her mount overraced approaching the 700m and then shifted wider and raced wide without cover from that point onwards.
NYRAMBLA – Raced greenly after passing the 400m and raced with its head in the air until leaving the 300m.
LIPSYNC – Raced in restricted room from the 500m to the 400m.
HARCOURT STREET – Lost the off fore plate in running.
Race 5: ALFIES EVENT HIRE & CATERING CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1400M
QUEENOFTHEPIXIES – Hung out rounding the home turn.
PRESS CENTRE – Slow to begin. M. Hellyer reported that the horse made an abnormal respiratory noise during the event before tailing off. A post-race veterinary examination confirmed the horse to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer G. Thompson was advised that the horse must undergo an endoscopic examination, the results of which are to be provided to stewards, and must trial satisfactorily prior to racing again. Mr Thompson advised that the horse will now be sent for a spell.
RAKITNO – Connections advised that as the horse has not been finishing its races off well when ridden forward, from the wide barrier today it will be the intention to have the horse ridden back in the field. The horse was ridden accordingly. M. Cahill indicated that after travelling well in the early and middle stages the horse failed to respond to his riding from the 500m and proved very disappointing. Trainer M. Leitch indicated that she would now discuss with the owners the horse’s immediate racing future.
ROCKING MY WORLD – Obliged to alter course leaving the 300m.
CRAIGLEA PISTOL – Overraced badly in the early and middle stages.
Race 6: D J F AUTO SOLUTIONS RATINGS BAND 0-70 H’CAP – 1600M
MYSTERIUM – Overraced in the lead during the middle stages.
HOW CAN I HELP – J. Lloyd was questioned regarding his tactics, whereby the horse settled midfield, which was in contrast to the horse’s most recent starts where it has led. He indicated that when he last rode the horse he had been instructed to settle the horse with cover, however the horse overraced when wearing blinkers. At its subsequent start, when ridden by G. Goold, the blinkers had been removed and despite this the gelding again overraced and was obliged to settle in the lead. With this in mind, stewards were satisfied that as no tactical change had occurred, no further action was taken.
KIKONGO – Finished tailed off. Trainer D. Roberts indicated that in light of today’s performance the mare would be sent for a short spell.
Race 7: THE JAMES ACKERMAN MEMORIAL CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1200M
ROAD TO THE BAY – Jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
ADHERE – D. Griffin was questioned regarding his tactics, which were to restrain the horse to the tail of the field in the early stages. He indicated that he had been instructed to obtain cover if possible, which he attempted to do, however after travelling a short distance it was apparent that he would be caught wide. He therefore elected to restrain the horse further to take up a position at the tail of the field. He indicated that the horse overraced early and was quite ungenerous throughout the event until rounding the home turn. He added that this had a detrimental effect on the horse’s overall performance. Stewards, after reviewing the video footage, were satisfied with the explanation.
BROQUALO – Raced three wide without cover.
ASHGROVIAN – Blundered on jumping.
Race 8: LUCKY STARS TRANSPLANT CRICKET INC. CLASS 4 H'CAP – 1400M
ASTRO AVALANCHE – Due to the horse having had a previous injury to its wither, it underwent a veterinary examination prior to the race and was cleared to take its place in the field. Raced wide without cover and weakened badly in the home straight. Trainer B. Snelling was advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s competitiveness.
MARTINELLI – Raced greenly under pressure over the concluding stages.
THREE BEERS PLEASE – Slow to begin.
BOLD AVENUE – Overraced in the early stages.
REALLY REILLY – Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
HEART COMMAND – Overraced in the early stages and was wide without cover throughout.
