On return to scale a protest was lodged by Jockey J. Orman, rider of the 4th placegetter FINAL ZERO, against VOL VALLEE – being declared the 2nd placegetter, alleging interference in the home straight.  After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards patrol video stewards determined that approaching the 100m FINAL ZERO, after establishing a run between  VITAL LOVE and VOL VALLEE, was obliged to check when VOL VALLEE shifted out under pressure before shifting back in.  Shortly afterwards, FINAL ZERO again established a run between those 2 horses and again was obliged to check near the 50m when VOL VALLEE shifted out under pressure.  As a result, FINAL ZERO went to the line without being fully tested.  Stewards were satisfied therefore that the interference was sufficient to uphold the objection and altered the Judge’s placings  to read:   No. 12 – Vita Love – 1st     No. 5 – Jadentom    No. 3 – Final Zero    No. 13 – Vol Vallee.  Subsequently, jockey B Grylls, rider of VOL VALLEE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that she did allow her mount to shift out approaching the 100m, tightening the running of FINAL ZERO, and  whilst stewards conceded she did stop riding and straighten, this was at a point after the interference had been suffered by FINAL ZERO.  Further, that jockey B. Gryllls continued to ride under pressure with the whip and again allowed her mount to shift out approaching the winning post, resulting in FINAL ZERO being tightened for room and having to be checked.  Jockey Grylls was suspended from riding in races for a period of 12 days, to commence at midnight, 8 January and to expire at midnight, 20 January.

Race 5: Chaps Menswear Class 1 H’cap – 1600m

HIS LORDSHIP – Had to be steadied approaching the 400m when tightened for room between runners.

LATE PAYMENT – Apprentice B. Panya reported that her mount travelled well until asked for an effort entering the home straight when it failed to respond to her riding and, in her opinion, proved somewhat disappointing. Miss Panya also added that in her opinion the horse may not have appreciated today’s firm racing surface.

HOT LIPSTICK – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Race 6: Coastline BMW Sunshine Coast Cup 28 January 2017 Benchmark 70  H’cap – 1200m

GHERARDINI – A post race veterinary examination revealed some soreness to the off foreleg.  Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to its next race start.

SHOTACROSSS THE BOW – Stewards asked jockey D. Browne to comment on the performance of the horse.  He indicated that, in his opinion, the gelding isn’t suited to 1200m and was under pressure in the early stages.  He stated his mount travelled well and was following the winner rounding the home turn, however  when DON’T TELL MAMA sprinted quickly his horse was unable to quicken and finished the race off fairly.

Race 7: Wimmers Premium Soft Drinks Class 1 H’cap – 1200m

WONDERFUL TALE – Checked near the 150m. Overraced in the early stages.

KAPHNI – Jockey D. Browne pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 150m in the home straight he did allow his mount to shift in, in order to secure clear running to the inside of SOL WITNESS, which resulted in tightening to WONDERFUL TALE, causing the rider of that horse to have to check that gelding and lose ground at that point of the race.  D. Browne was suspended from riding in races for a period of  11 days, to commence at midnight, 2 January and to expire at midnight, 13 January.
