TWICE ALONE – Jumped away awkwardly.

COLLEGIATE – Overraced in the early stages.  Stewards opened an inquiry into the handling of the horse.  Of concern were the actions of apprentice Sewell and his lack of vigour from the 400m onwards.  Apprentice Sewell explained that his instructions were issued by trainer Mr A. Jones, who  indicated he did not believe that the horse would be comfortable on the rain affected track and in these conditions  instructed apprentice Sewell to ensure he held the horse’s head up in an attempt to have it travel on the bridle. Apprentice Sewell   indicated the horse travelled strongly throughout. Apprentice Sewell stated that COLLEGIATE, in his view, did not let down well in the straight until it changed stride near the 200m and then found the line well whilst hanging in, which it had done so since rounding the home turn.   A post race veterinary examination indicated that the horse had pulled up sore in the off foreleg with soreness in the shoulder.   Stewards considered the evidence and whilst they advised apprentice Sewell that, in their opinion, he had overdone the instructions, however given the report from the veterinary surgeon, did not take the matter any further.  A post race veterinary examination revealed soreness in the off foreleg. Mr Jones was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to its next race start.

BOARD DIRECTOR – Jockey Cassidy was asked to comment on the performance of the horse.  He indicated that after travelling well in a favourable position behind the lead, the horse did not let down as expected in the home straight.  He felt this could be attributed to the horse having its  second start this preparation and carrying 59.5 kilograms on a rain-affected track.  He indicated that in the circumstances he was not entirely disappointed with the overall performance.  A post race veterinary examination indicated that the horse had a slower than normal post-race recovery.  A swab sample was taken.

Jockey R. Wiggins (DEITCH) and apprentice jockey A Fancourt (KEEP ON ROCKING) made application prior to correct weight to have their mounts declared non runners. After viewing the video footage and taking evidence from both riders and the starter, stewards were satisfied that DEITCH reared as the start was effected and other than for its own actions were afforded a fair start. Stewards also believed that KEEP ON ROCKING reared shortly after  DEITCH and were also satisfied that this horse had been  afforded a fair start and therefore correct weight was declared on the Judge’s placings.
