CALL ME RUSTY – Stewards questioned apprentice C. Bayliss in relation to the riding tactics he adopted on the horse, which obtained the lead easily in the early stages and was then restrained when the pace was very , which allowed MARAU DAZE to cross near the 1500, which resulted in CALL ME RUSTY overracing in the middle stages. Apprentice Bayliss indicated that he had been advised that the connections anticipated the horse leading and he was also of the view that the horse would lead the event, however, after having been questioned in relation to allowing one of his mounts at the Gold Coast on 4 February to race too hard in the early and middle stages, he was reluctant to continue to lead for fear that this would occur again. Stewards advised apprentice Bayliss that in their opinion, when given instructions, he should attempt to comply with those instructions where circumstances permit, and in this situation he had erred in failing to remain in the lead, however given the horse’s finishing effort and given that this was apprentice Bayliss’ first race ride over today’s distance of 1800m and taking into account his relative inexperience, stewards took no further action.
