Race 1: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS CLASS 3 PLATE – 2200M
LASER SIGHT – Commenced to lay out rounding the home turn, made contact with another runner, and laid out under pressure whilst weakening in the home straight. M. Hellyer reported that his mount weakened quickly in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer A. Willick reported that the horse sustained a minor laceration to the inside of the off fore fetlock and indicated that she would notify stewards of the progress of the wound in coming days.
MONTEZUMA – Bumped by another runner near the 400m.
CHAMPAGNE KISSES – Commenced to overrace for a short distance near the 1900m before being shifted wider on the track and ridden forward to assume the lead passing the 1600m.
Race 2: HIGGINS MAIDEN H'CAP – 1200M
CHARNLEY RIVER – Improved onto heels near the 800m and had to be restrained and was again restrained from heels before shifting three wide near the 600m. Bled from both nostrils. As this was the second occasion on which the horse has bled, it will now incur a lifetime bar from racing.
PLENTY OF TIME – Finished a distant last. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s performance.
BUNGLE BOORI – Stewards asked M. Hellyer to comment on the horse’s performance. He indicated that as the horse had a tendency to hang, he was mindful of this in the running. The horse did lay out somewhat rounding the home turn and when attempting to secure clear running in the home straight, he looked to improve to the inside of BAR FLY BARRISTER, however when that horse shifted back towards the fence he elected to shift out approaching the 200m and was then also obliged to shift out further to obtain clear running outside THE COLUMBIAN. He added that the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages and would appreciate a step up in distance.
Race 3: WORKPLACE CENTRAL MAIDEN PLATE – 1600M
KUTTAMURRA AL – Had to be checked from heels when the pace slackened further near the 800m. Held up rounding the home turn and had some difficulty securing clear running until approaching the 300m.
LIGHTNING JACKSON – Overraced in the early stages and raced wide throughout.
FLIGHT PRINCE – Hampered and taken wider for a short distance near the 1000m. Shifted wider from the 600m to improve and made the home turn wide.
NATIONAL JEWEL – Significantly hampered at the start and lost ground. Commenced to overrace approaching the 1300m when the pace was only steady and the saddle, as a result, slipped forward, placing its rider at a disadvantage. For the remainder of the event apprentice English shifted to a three and four wide position to avoid heels and raced extremely wide before weakening in the home straight.
EXPERTEA – Had to be steadied from heels when the pace slackened further near the 800m.
SMOOTH PEBBLES – Jumped awkwardly and made heavy contact with another runner. Raced wide in the early stages.
Race 4: KIA-ORA TANAWHA DEVELOPMENTS CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1000M
The start of this race was delayed when BITHARD required farrier attention behind the barriers.
After viewing the stewards’ patrol footage, Chairman of Stewards J. Williamson lodged an objection on behalf of 5th placegetter BITHARD against AQUAJEWEL being declared 4th, alleging interference approaching the 200m. After taking evidence from Mr Williamson and the respective riders, it was established that approaching the 200m BITHARD, which was inclined to lay in, did clip the heels of JET SUKI and blunder on two occasions. Stewards found that this was as a result of a minor shift from AQUAJEWEL, which had brushed JET SUKI and taken that runner out at that point, and then a further shift from JET SUKI, which came without influence from AQUAJEWEL. In the circumstances, bearing in mind the long neck margin separating both horses at the finish, stewards could not be satisfied that the placings should be altered as the interference suffered could not be attributed solely to a shift from AQUAJEWEL and therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings. At a subsequent inquiry, stewards took no action against any rider. Mr Williamson was not a member of the panel that adjudicated on the protest.
DELAWAR – Raced three wide without cover.
BITHARD – The veterinary surgeon reported that the horse sustained a laceration to the front of the off fore pastern.
DOMINANT CROWN – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn and until approaching the 200m and then again near the 100m. When asked to comment, rider D. Browne indicated that whilst he was held up he also felt that the horse was somewhat reluctant to improve to the inside of other runners as it became awkward to the inside of GUADALUPE when attempting to improve near the 500m, and when able to improve near the 200m the horse raced greenly and when he was attempting to shift out around DELAWAR near the 100m, the horse again showed a reluctance to respond to being directed out at that point.
SHE’S SO MEAN – Raced with its head in the air in the middle stages.
TONY’S PRINCESS – Raced wide without cover.
Race 5: MCGRATH BUDERIM & MOOLOOLABA CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1200M
PRECISION STRIKE – Steadied near the 700m.
COBRA QUICK – Slow to begin.
BURNING MOUNTAIN – Steadied when placed in restricted room after passing the 800m.
GREAT PATIENCE – Raced wide throughout.
Race 6: HOT 91.1 CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1400M
MONACO SNOB – Stood flat-footed at the start and lost significant ground. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners. Laid in under pressure in the home straight, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten near the 200m.
ENLIGHTENED – Raced three wide without cover. Laid in under pressure from the 400m onwards. A. Allen reported that his mount raced greenly throughout the event.
SWIPPA DA MOUSE – Steadied when placed in restricted room near the 500m. Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.
Race 7: MONACO RESORT SACRED ELIXIR QTIS 2YO H'CAP – 1400M
CRUZE, which refused to load, was declared a late scratching at 3:55 pm. Trainer B. Lockwood was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for CRUZE prior to the horse racing again. PRINCELY SUM, which kicked out in the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 3:56 pm following advice that the horse had sustained a laceration to the near hind leg. Trainer B. Costello was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance before racing again.
On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on CRUZE be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
13 cents in the dollar for the Win #4
15 cents in the dollar for place of winner #4
10 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #1
