Byrne reported that although it had been his intention to possibly lead, his mount did not begin as well as anticipated and was quickly crossed in the early stages and then raced very greenly throughout the event, overraced onto heels on a number of occasions and had to be checked from heels near the 800m and again when held up for clear running between the 500m and the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings other than it had a poor post-race recovery rate. TECHNO SAVVY – Jumped away awkwardly, causing its rider to be unbalanced during the early stages of the event. KEOSON – M. Cahill reported that his mount slipped behind on jumping away. SNOOPER – The saddle slipped to the nearside on jumping away, placing apprentice T. Brooker at a disadvantage for a short distance. Raced three wide without cover. Race 4: YALUMBA WINES C,G&E MAIDEN PLATE – 1000M The start of this race was delayed when THE MOODAGUDDA was reluctant to proceed to the barriers. The horse underwent a veterinary inspection by request of the stewards and was cleared to start. ECKER ROAD – Laid in and raced greenly under pressure in the home straight. THE MOODAGUDDA – Raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. BAUHINIA STORM – A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the horse had heat stress. LANDSCAPER – Slow to begin. MORESKA SWORD – Jumped awkwardly and was tightened for room and lost ground. Trailed the field throughout and finished a distant last. Trainer S. Kendrick confirmed his disappointment in the performance and was accepting of the fact that the horse was not entirely suited to the distance, however was concerned that the horse could not muster any early speed and stay in touch with the main body of the field. He indicated that he would have veterinary tests performed in the coming days, the results of which he would report to stewards. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. THE SOCIALIST – Inconvenienced by another runner near the 800m when placed in restricted room. Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to FIRM 2. Heinemann was advised that SINISTER PRINCESS must obtain a further barrier certificate before being permitted to race again. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on SINISTER PRINCESS be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 3:47 pm: 19 cents in the dollar for the win #1013 cents in the dollar for place of winner #1013 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #821 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #3 CYCLONE MIA – Placed in restricted room on a number of occasions passing the 600m. YOU DON’T SAY MOLLY – Hung out after passing the winning post on the first occasion until leaving the 1800m. MIZARU – Rider M. McGillivray was questioned regarding his tactics and the horse’s performance. He indicated that pre-race he had been instructed that the horse would be settling in the second half of the field. He said that connections had advised him that the horse has no early gate speed and to therefore not be overly aggressive in the early stages. He indicated that the horse settled initially in a favourable position approaching the 1700m, however when the pace slackened after passing the 1500m he was obliged to steady from heels. When asked whether he had considered pressuring the horse to improve around the field at this point, he indicated that he had given this consideration, however given that he would be obliged to race three wide he decided against this and when the race developed into a sprint home he attempted to quicken after passing the 700m and the horse found the line only fairly. He indicated that he believed the overall performance could be attributed to the slow sectionals set in the middle stages. Stewards noted the explanation. Race 7: MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM SCTC CLASS 4 H’CAP – 1400M TROIS CHOIX – Had difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn. BENFICA PRINCESS – Had to be checked and lost its rightful position near the 1100m when BAUHINIA SID attempted to secure a position behind SCRABBLE where there was insufficient room to do so. J. Stanley, the rider of BAUHINIA SID, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding for causing the interference to BENFICA PRINCESS. Jockey Stanley’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 24 December 2017 and expire at midnight on Monday 1 January 2018. In determining penalty, stewards took into account jockey Stanley’s guilty plea, his very good record and the degree of interference to BENFICA PRINCESS. Had to be steadied when disappointed for a run leaving the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. OMNIA MARKA TAYADA – Significantly slow to begin.
