OUR MATE TURTLE – As M Schrapel was indisposed, R Ride was substituted as the rider of the horse.

Race 2: Kincrome Maiden 4yo & Up H’cap – 1400m
The start was delayed when QUEACHY had to be resaddled behind the barriers.
SIP SIP SIP – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the mare, apprentice Lacy advised she was caught wide in the early stages from the wide barrier and the mare commenced to overrace and therefore it was allowed to stride forward to obtain the lead passing the 1000m. When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer P. Duncan explained that the mare was only having its second start for the stable and at its first start it was a little fresh and became stirred up prior to its race and that may have taken its toll on that day. Today with improvement in its fitness, and with the addition of earmuffs, had the mare more settled prior to the race which may have been to her advantage.
GALAXY GURU – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, trainer P. Duncan explained that the gelding sweated up quite badly today and, in his opinion, was disappointing. He advised that he may send the gelding for a short let up before resuming racing.
CEDAR RAPIDS – After becoming fractious in the tie-up stalls prior to entering the enclosure was examined by the veterinary surgeon behind the barriers and cleared to take its place in the field. Was shifted to a 3-wide position without cover passing the 900m when BLOOMIN’ ARRY shifted out.
MANDLAKAZI – Was restrained shortly after the start to obtain a position at the rear closer to the rail. From the 300m until 150m was slightly impeded when attempting to make ground and bumped on a number of occasions with SLAM DUNKED.
SLAM DUNKED – Passing the 300m was bumped by MANDLAKAZI, which shifted out to improve.
REMOLAD – Trainer L. Wheeler stated that following the gelding’s poor performance today he would discuss with the owners its racing future with a view to it being retired. Mr Wheeler was advised that should the gelding continue racing, it would be required to complete an official trial to the satisfaction of the stewards.
Race 3: Paslode QTIS 2yo Maiden Plate – 1000m
GOLDIE GIRL – After became fractious in the gates, reared and became cast and was withdrawn from the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and subsequently declared a late scratching at 2.19 pm. Jockey B. Grylls was examined by the doctor and cleared to fulfil her remaining engagements. Trainer T. Edmonds was advised that the filly would require a further barrier test certificate prior to its next race start.
SPIRIT’S FIRST – Which was in the adjoining barrier to GOLDIE GIRL, was struck on the head and back several times by GOLDIE GIRL and was also removed from the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 2.19 pm. Apprentice R. Ride was examined by the doctor and cleared to fulfil her remaining engagements.

POWERFUL SAGA – After jumping, jockey J. Byrne became unbalanced and lost the use of his off-side iron for a short distance before regaining it passing the 900m.
LIPSYNC – Passing the 900m had to be restrained from the heels of POWERFUL SAGA, which shifted in. Jockey L. Tarrant reported his saddle shifted after passing the 300m, placing him in some difficulty. Lost his whip at the 200m.
Race 5: Get Tools Direct Class 4 H’cap – 1800m
HARD EVIDENCE – Was slightly hampered near the 300m when attempting to take a narrow run to the inside of the tiring ONE MORE TWO MORE.
ONE MORE TWO MORE – Apprentice J. Murphy reported that the mare may have choked down during the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.
Stewards opened an inquiry into the tactics adopted on AUDREE and CASINO GARDENS, specifically the tempo set in the early and middle stages of the race. Jockey A. Sewell, rider of CASINO GARDENS, explained that his instructions were obtain the lead as the gelding has performed best when adopting those tactics previously. Jockey Sewell added that passing the 1600m he realised that he would be unable to cross AUDREE which was over-racing to his inside, after which he was content to remain racing to the outside of that runner. Bearing in mind his instructions to lead he was reluctant to restrain CASINO GARDENS to a position behind AUDREE at that point. Trainer T Miller confirmed the instructions and added that he was satisfied with jockey Sewell’s decision not to restrain and obtain cover behind AUDREE as the gelding has previously performed poorly when unable to lead. App Fancourt, as the rider of AUDREE, stated she was instructed to lead however, when CASINO GARDENS headed her near the 1600m she attempted to restrain AUDREE in an effort to allow CASINO GARDENS to cross to the lead. However, AUDREE commenced to over-race and despite her efforts failed to settle. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Apprentice Fancourt, however Stewards advised Jockey Sewell, notwithstanding the instructions issued, he had erred in remaining to the outside of AUDREE during the middle stages after not being able to cross to the lead passing the 1600m in an effort to give that gelding every opportunity to run out a strong 1800m. However, bearing in mind the instructions issued by Mr Miller, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that Jockey Sewell’s actions were culpable under the rules of racing. Stewards also considered whether Mr Miller’s instructions and subsequent approval of Jockey Sewell’s actions were in breach of the rules however bearing in mind the previous tactics and performances of CASINO GARDENS Stewards
could not be completely satisfied that he was culpable.
Both AUDREE and CASINO GARDENS were examined by the veterinary surgeon post race which revealed no abnormalities.
Race 6: Hikoki Class 1 H’cap – 1600m
THE SHEEPISH LION – Stewards accepted the explanation for the late scratching of the horse at 7.36 am.
MISS SEVERINA – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure over the final 300m.
MIDNIGHT DELIGHT – Bumped on jumping away.
REMARKABLE SON – Leaving the 200m was slightly hampered when MISS SEVERINA initially laid in and shortly after was again slightly hampered when tightened by OUR NICK, which was taken out by RIVER BOY.

WILLOWBROOK WONDER – Began awkwardly. Bumped after passing the 400m. After showing speed and leading in the early part of the event, when placed under pressure passing the 500m failed to respond. Rider A Spinks reported that, in his opinion, the filly did not handle today’s track conditions.
OUR RACKETEER – Hampered on jumping away.
REAL CUTE – Began awkwardly. Apprentice B. Nothdurft was fined $500 for using his whip more than the permitted amount prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards were mindful of his recent poor record, which included a fine for a breach of this rule last night at Toowoomba.
