QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT SUNSHINE COAST TURF CLUB – SUNDAY 13 MAY 2018 WEATHER – FINE RAIL – 9M TRACK RATING – SOFT 5/GOOD 4 (After Race 1)PENETROMETER – 6.65 OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – J. HansonStewards Secretary – W. Ostrofski Race 1: THE WHARF MOOLOOLABA C,G&E MAIDEN PLATE – 1400M The start of this race was delayed when MONTANA MIST proved difficult to load. As MONTANA MIST refused to load the gelding was declared a late scratching at 1:28 pm. Trainer T. Thomas was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for the horse before it is permitted to race. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on MONTANA MIST be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 1:28 pm: 6 cents in the dollar for the win #75 cents in the dollar for place of winner #714 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #4 LAYLITE – Jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Raced three wide without cover. N. Thomas reported that he had attempted to ride forward from near the 850m, however the horse did not respond to his riding and weakened from the 600m. NIGHT WHISPER – Lost the near hind plate in running. STRAIGHT HOME – Tightened for room at the start and had to be checked. Overraced in the early stages. Obliged to shift back to the inside when attempting to secure a run near the 300m. Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 4. Race 2: ACCESS INSULATION F&M MAIDEN PLATE – 1400M MARKISTA – Tightened for room whilst weakening after leaving the 400m and had to be steadied. SPEAKING BAD – Raced greenly in the early stages. Raced wide throughout. Buffeted and became unbalanced near the 400m. S. Shield reported that his saddle slipped back on jumping. DEVILLAIN – Hung out rounding the home turn. GINGO – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the filly had an upper respiratory tract infection. Trainer M. Mair was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again. JANEMY – Made heavy contact with another runner and became unbalanced when shifting out to obtain clear running after leaving the 400m. N. Thomas was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. LOLA’S DIAMOND – Stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost ground. When questioned regarding the horse’s performance and the tactics she adopted, B. Grylls indicated that after being slow to begin she was positioned at the tail of the field and when near the 800m she became aware that a significant distance had developed between her and the leaders so she elected to stride forward three wide to improve her position, however shortly thereafter horses racing to the inside commenced to shift out and she was progressively forced wider and made the home turn extremely wide. She added that whilst this had a detrimental effect on the horse’s overall performance, she was nevertheless disappointed with the horse’s finishing effort. K. Schweida indicated to stewards that he had removed the blinkers from as the horse has had a tendency to be slow to begin. He added that in hindsight he believes this had not been beneficial to the horse and may have affected its performance today. He further added that he would take the horse back to the barriers for more barrier work and add the blinkers to the horse’s gear prior to its next start. Race 3: WIMMERS PREMIUM SOFT DRINKS CLASS 2 PLATE – 1000M Trainer G. Ryan was fined $100 for the late declaration of riders for RHYTHM OF LIGHT and LAREBIL (Race 6). ENTERPRISE MARCH – M. Cahill was asked to comment on the horse’s performance. He indicated that after being slightly tardy to begin the horse did not respond to his urgings in the early stages and was reluctant to hold a position. He added that the horse had a tendency to lay out rounding the home turn and in doing so made contact with another runner and then laid out under pressure in the home straight. He indicated that the horse would benefit from a step up in distance. PLEASANTRIES – R. Wiggins reported that he felt his mount was awkward in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. SHE’S FAST – Improved on to heels over the final 100m and was obliged to alter course. Apprentice S. Lacy reported that her mount was unable to muster early speed and will benefit from a step up in distance. SWEET ORPHAN – Became awkward at heels when shifting closer to the fence near the 800m and had to be steadied. Continued to race ungenerously and hung out from the 600m before being bumped by another runner near the 400m. Bled from both nostrils during the event. Ineligible to start for 3 months and prior to resuming racing must gallop satisfactorily over 100m in the presence of a steward. Race 4: SUNNY COAST RACE FEST CLASS 3 H'CAP – 1400M O’REILLY CYRUS – Steadied when placed in restricted room near the 900m. TONY BALONEY – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings other than some lacerations to the off hind leg. Trainer T. Sears indicated that in light of today’s performance the horse would be retired from racing. Stewards nonetheless advised Mr Sears that should his circumstances change the horse would be required to officially trial before racing again. CORAL BAY – Slow to begin. Race 5: HOT 91.1 LADIES OAKS DAY 1 JUNE QTIS 2YO H'CAP – 1400M A MAN TO MATCH – Shifted wider near the 800m to improve and raced wide from that point onwards. SOARING HEART – Bumped by another runner over the concluding stages. Apprentice C. Gallagher dropped his whip near the 250m. ARCHADE – Shifted in and away from another runner approaching the 1200m. STARVIRGO – Overraced in the early stages. Inconvenienced by another runner approaching the 1200m. Overraced when being restrained approaching the 1000m. Had a tendency to lay out after racing in restricted room in the early stages of the home straight, making contact with another runner on a number of occasions over the concluding stages. PISTOLERO – Overraced when the pace slackened approaching the first turn. PATSYS LASS – M. Cahill dropped his whip at the 400m. M. Cahill was asked to comment on the positioning of the horse and its performance. He indicated that he would have liked to have been positioned closer to the lead, however despite riding aggressively in the early stages he was crossed by other runners quite early in the event and was obliged to settle in the second half of the field. He added that he would have liked to improve from the 600m, however was unable to do so. STRAWBERRY BLONDE – Slow to begin. Race 6: UBET MORETON CUP RACEDAY 2 JUNE BM62 H'CAP – 1200M EXCELEBRAZIONE – Jumped away awkwardly, made heavy contact with the barrier partition and lost ground. Apprentice J. Murphy reported that his mount raced, in his opinion, like a horse that had come to the end of its preparation. Trainer W. Hulbert reported to stewards that the horse would now be sent for a spell. LAREBIL – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the event. BEAU DANCER – Raced three wide without cover. BIDZIIL – Placed in restricted room shortly after the start, had to be restrained and lost ground. YANKEE BUBBLES – Tightened for room shortly after the start, checked and forced inwards onto another runner. Apprentice B. Nothdurft, the rider of KARAHARAGA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that shortly after the start, whilst riding aggressively, he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of YANKEE BUBBLES, causing that runner to be checked and forced inwards onto BIDZIIL, which was placed in restricted room, lost ground and had to be restrained. Apprentice Nothdurft’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 12 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 19 May and expire at midnight on Thursday 31 May 2018. In determining penalty, stewards took into account apprentice Nothdurft’s poor recent record in regard to careless riding matters and deemed the degree of carelessness to be in the mid-range. Became unbalanced and lost ground when being restrained to avoid heels near the 800m. ENVIRONMENTAL – Stewards questioned apprentice S. Lacy regarding her riding over the final 150m. She advised that she improved on the fence to the inside of NOBLE HUSSLER and over the final 150m was not afforded clear running. Stewards advised Ms Lacy that whilst accepting of the fact that no clear running was present to the inside of NOBLE HUSSLER, her failure to apply further vigour in an attempt to improve behind HINGUS ROSE left her open to question. In the circumstances, stewards were satisfied that her actions had not had a material effect on her mount’s placing in the event and for this reason took no further action other than to remind her of her obligations.
