SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Doomben 7 July 2018 – Race 5: Trainer M. Costa reported that a subsequent veterinary examination of TEMPETE ROUGE at his stables revealed lacerations to the horse’s mouth and not ulcers as reported last week. He indicated that the horse will be treated for these lacerations, have a let-up and he will supply a veterinary clearance prior to it racing again.
Race 1: SAVILLS SUNSHINE COAST TWO METRO WINS H’CAP – 1400M
Trainer S. Kendrick was fined $200 for the late declaration of R. Stewart as the rider of BOWIE.
PRIVLAKA – Stewards questioned apprentice B. Thornton regarding his riding of PRIVLAKA, particularly between the 500m and the 200m. Apprentice Thornton explained that he had no specific instructions other than to ride the horse where it was comfortable and after beginning well he settled the horse trailing MARENOSTRO, which was racing outside the leader. He added that rounding the home turn he attempted to shift FAST ARROW wider in an effort to obtain clear running, but was unable to do so due to FAST ARROW racing to his outside and forward of him. He was then held up for clear running when awkwardly placed at the heels of MARENOSTRO when that runner commenced to weaken. Apprentice Thornton added that he was prevented from shifting wider until approaching the 200m where he considered improving into a run between MARENOSTRO and FAST ARROW but was ultimately disappointed for that run and obliged to shift to the outside of FAST ARROW leaving the 200m after which the horse finished the race strongly. Stable representative Mr R. O’Leary confirmed that apprentice Thornton was instructed to attempt to ride the horse in a handy position with cover, however if there was a lack of early speed, it was an option to lead the race. Trainer R. Heathcote later stated that in his view apprentice Thornton had erred by not steadying PRIVLAKA and shifting wider earlier in the home straight. Mr Heathcote also indicated that the horse would be sent for a spell. Stewards advised apprentice Thornton that in their opinion he had erred by not attempting to steady PRIVLAKA and bring it to the outside of FAST ARROW sooner, which may have resulted in him being able to test the horse sooner than he did. Stewards were of the view that these actions were not blameworthy under the rules to the requisite standard and took no direct action.
FAST ARROW – Raced three wide without cover throughout.
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to SOFT 6.
Race 2: THOMPSON MCNICHOL LAWYERS CLASS 6 PLATE – 1200M
The start of this race was delayed when SUPER SUAVE, which cast the off hind plate after being loaded into the barriers, was removed, along with the other runners, attended to by the farrier and cleared to take its place in the field.
MISHANI PHOENIX – Overraced in the middle stages.
TAN TAT DIAMOND – When questioned, apprentice B. Thornton expressed his disappointment in the gelding’s performance in that it was inclined to lay out for the majority of the race. Trainer S. O’Dea stated that the gelding had worked well leading into the event, which included a pleasing performance in an unofficial barrier trial on Tuesday, 10 July. Mr O’Dea was unable to explain the disappointing performance and undertook to have the gelding examined by the stable veterinarian, the results of which will be forwarded to stewards.
SUPER SUAVE – Shifted out under pressure over the final 250m and approaching the 100m shifted out and brushed QUEENOFTHEPIXIES.
FREQUENDLY – Jumped awkwardly and lost ground.

THE OVERDRAFT – Tightened for room when taken out on to THE REAL SPIEL near the 300m and had to be checked. Apprentice B. Thornton, the rider of SCRABBLE, pleaded not guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 300m he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of THE OVERDRAFT, resulting in that runner being taken outwards onto THE REAL SPIEL and having to be checked. After hearing further submissions from apprentice Thornton and his representative, senior rider Dale Smith, stewards conceded that after initially shifting out slightly, apprentice Thornton did make an effort to straighten SCRABBLE and that runner shifted out further despite his efforts. For these reasons stewards did not proceed with the matter and found apprentice Thornton not guilty.
