GENERAL
 
As apprentice M. Murphy was to be overweight in Races 2 and 3, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Apprentice Murphy was fined $300.
 
Stewards interviewed jockey J. Byrne after he was observed on a mobile phone in the enclosure prior to the running of Race 8. Jockey Byrne satisfied stewards that it was a family matter which required his attention as the phone he was using was that of his son, who was in the vicinity. Stewards reprimanded jockey Byrne for his actions.
 
Race 1: SPORTING CHANCE FOUNDATION QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1400M
 
SUGAR SIZZLE – Overraced in the early stages and near the 700m shifted wider to avoid heels and raced wide without cover from that point onwards.
 
A MAN TO MATCH – Laid in under pressure from the 400m onwards.
 
RED DOULTON – Held up for clear running from the 400m until near the 250m.
 
BELLE ROC – Slow to begin.
 
NIGHT CHARMER – Finished tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
 
HEART VANDELAY – Overraced in the early stages.
 
TOO HOT TO HOLD – Slow to begin.
 
Race 2: BOB JANE T-MARTS MAROOCHYDORE OPEN H’CAP – 1600M
 
ORDER AGAIN – Lost the off hind plate near the 400m and laid in under pressure in the home straight, placing its rider at a disadvantage. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
BERGERAC – Bumped by another runner and forced wider near the 1300m.
 
PRIORITISE – Overraced due to the slow early tempo and had to be checked from heels near the 1300m, shifted out making contact with BERGERAC, forcing that horse wider for a short distance, and then continued to overrace until leaving the 800m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
VELADERO – Trainer C. Waller advised that it would be the intention to have the gelding ridden worse than midfield with cover if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.
 
Race 3: ALL COMPUTER SERVICES CLASS 6 PLATE – 1000M
 
SILIQUA – Jumped awkwardly, made contact with the barrier partition and lost ground. Hung out between the 600m and the 400m.
 
TACTICAL ADVANTAGE – Shifted out abruptly near the 100m, placing its rider at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.
 
DRUMBEAT’S CHOICE – Slow to begin and was eased shortly after the start when placed in restricted room.
 
JUST ORM – Raced wide without cover.
 
STAR JUSTICE – Raced greenly in the middle stages.
 
Race 4: RUMBA BEACH RESORT CALOUNDRA QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1000M
 
COASTAL BOY – Jumped awkwardly and made contact with another runner.
 
SPENDING MY TIME – Jumped awkwardly and lost ground after making contact with another runner. Had some difficulty securing clear running passing the 400m.
 
EXACTAMENTE – Raced ungenerously approaching the 700m, shifted out and bumped another runner.
 
GYPSY TOFF – Raced wide without cover.
 
ALLE VONGOLE – Steadied when obliged to race in restricted room approaching the 700m, then hung out after passing the 700m until approaching the 400m and was then inconvenienced by another runner approaching the 200m.
 
LADY CLARE – Obliged to race in restricted room near the 700m and again inconvenienced by another runner approaching the 400m and forced wider on the track. Apprentice J. Murphy was asked to comment on the horse’s performance. He indicated that after travelling favourably in the early and middle stages the horse suffered interference on the home turn and failed to respond to his riding thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery.
 
Race 5: CLINIC ONE BENCHMARK 80 H’CAP – 1400M
 
BEL BURGESS – Trainer D. Murphy was questioned regarding the horse’s seemingly improved performance. He indicated that he had expected a forward showing in today’s event as he had anticipated the track having more give than at its two most recent starts. He added that the horse has performed well previously racing on similar surfaces. He further added that the gelding was able to obtain the lead without being challenged today and he believed that this was also beneficial to the horse’s chances. He indicated that he had supported the horse in today’s event as he believed that having a 3kg claiming apprentice was also a significant factor.
 
NOTHING BOX – Raced awkwardly in the early stages.
 
LOOKS LIKE ELVIS – When questioned regarding the horse’s performance, apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester advised that he obtained a favourable position just worse than midfield and travelled comfortably throughout. He indicated that the horse improved approaching the turn and had responded to his riding in the early stages of the home straight, however did weaken over the final 100m. Trainer B. Dais stated that he had instructed the rider to attempt to obtain cover and not to ride the horse forward as he felt it would be caught wide. However, after the horse obtained cover, with hindsight he was of the opinion that this resulted in the horse being positioned a little further back in the field than he had anticipated. Furthermore, he felt that the performance was affected by having to improve from the 700m as he did not feel that the horse could sustain such a long run and finish the race off strongly. He indicated that he was satisfied with the horse’s performance and felt that the performance could be explained by the manner in which the race was ultimately run. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
 
Race 6: REED RACING BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 2400M
 
OLYMPIC ACADEMY – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.
 
KUBIS – Raced in restricted room after passing the 600m when attempting to avoid the weakening CHOPPA.
 
FUERZA – Overraced when the pace slackened passing the 2200m. R. Plumb reported that the horse felt short in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer T. Timbery was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
 
FIGHTING TEO – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.
 
METEOROLOGIST – Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Steadied approaching the 1800m when placed in restricted room. Raced wide from the 1100m.
 
DARBADAR – Bumped by another runner whilst racing wide shortly after passing the 900m.
 
SIR BARNABUS – Made contact with another runner and became awkward when attempting to shift out to improve near the 900m.
 
ANTIGONE – As J. Orman was to be overweight, M. McGillivray was substituted as rider. J. Orman was fined $100. Obliged to race in restricted room between runners approaching the 500m when FUERZA shifted out to avoid the weakening CHOPPA.
 
GALAXY GURU – Obliged to race in restricted room between runners after passing the 600m.
 
CHOPPA – Commenced to weaken from the 600m and tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer G. Sitek reported that the horse would be sent for a spell. Stewards advised Mr Sitek that the horse must perform competitively in an official trial before racing again and will be barred from metropolitan meetings until satisfactory provincial form is established.
 
Race 7: BLOOMHILL CANCER CARE OPEN H’CAP – 1200M
 
FIERY HEIGHTS – Raced wide from approaching the 600m.
 
MALVERN ESTATE – Raced wide without cover.
 
VOLKOFF – As P. Hammersley was to be overweight, M. McNab was substituted as rider. P. Hammersley was fined $200. Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
 
ALLKNIGHT SAINT – Inconvenienced near the 150m. Lost the off hind plate in running.
 
TVERSKY – Held up from the 400m until near the 200m.
 
OLD HABITS – Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn. Momentarily held up near the 100m.
 
Race 8: BLOOMHILL OP SHOPS BENCHMARK 70 H’CAP – 1200M
 
SCRABBLE – Slow to begin.
 
MR BELLAGIO – Raced wide throughout.
 
KHALEESI – Raced wide without cover.
 
RHYMING – Trainer S. Tregea advised that from the wide barrier it would be the intention to have the mare ridden back in the field. The horse was ridden accordingly.
 
COMIC STORY – Taken out across the running of another runner near the 200m.
 
CRAB BOY – Had to be checked and shift out near the 200m to avoid the heels of COMIC STORY. Apprentice J. Murphy, the rider of HIRTSHALS, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 200m, whilst his mount was inclined to lay out, he applied the whip and rode vigorously, resulting in his mount shifting out, taking COMIC STORY out across the running of CRAB BOY, which had to be checked and shift out. Apprentice J. Murphy’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 9 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 8 September and expire at midnight on Monday 17 September 2018.
 
LE DRAMA – Overraced in the early stages.
 
Race 9: BLOOMHILL VOLUNTEERS CLASS 3 PLATE – 1600M
 
The declaration of correct weight was delayed while stewards viewed the patrol footage of the start. After viewing the videos and taking evidence from the starter Mr R. Smith, G. Colless (CEDARWOOD) and T. Harrison (SOL WITNESS) it was established that just prior to the start being effected SOL WITNESS had lunged forward and as a result opened its barrier prematurely. As a result, stewards found that SOL WITNESS had gained an unfair advantage and therefore, acting under the provisions of AR. 134B, declared the horse a non-runner. On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on SOL WITNESS be refunded with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:
 
0 cents in the dollar for the win #8
1 cents in the dollar for place of winner #8
2 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #13
1 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #3
 
In relation to an application by jockey G. Colless that CEDARWOOD be declared a non-runner, it was established that after the barrier of SOL WITNESS had opened, all other barriers had opened in unison and had been effected by the starter. It was established that CEDARWOOD reared just prior to the barriers opening and other than for its own actions the horse would have gained a fair start. Therefore, stewards declared CEDARWOOD a runner.
 
RIPPIN ‘N’ TEARIN – Raced wide in the early stages. Shifted out after passing the 500m in an attempt to secure clear running and in doing so made heavy contact on a number of occasions with another runner before being disappointed and having to be steadied after passing the 400m.
 
SAXTON ROCK – Overraced in the early stages. Tightened for room and checked from the heels of RIPPIN ‘N’ TEARIN near the 1000m. A. Sewell, the rider of RIPPIN ‘N’ TEARIN, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 1000m he directed his mount inwards, tightening the racing room of SAXTON ROCK, which had to be checked to avoid the heels of RIPPIN ‘N’ TEARIN, and in doing so RECKLESS CHOICE, which was racing to the inside of SAXTON ROCK, was tightened for room. Following this incident SAXTON ROCK shifted out and raced wide. A. Sewell’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 11 days, to commence at midnight on Thursday 6 September and expire at midnight on Monday 17 September 2018.
 
RECKLESS CHOICE – Slow to begin. Tightened for room approaching the 1000m. Bumped by another runner and became unbalanced for a short distance approaching the 400m.
 
ALCAZAR – Slow to begin.
 
SHOCKFACTOR – Raced wide without cover.
 
NOSSUH – Disappointed for clear running approaching the 200m and had to be steadied.
 
An inquiry was adjourned into the reasons for IDALIA’S DREAM having to be checked near the 150m.
 
Apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester will be interviewed as to his reasons for leaving the course without being cleared to do so.
