Race 1: Drains Kleen Maiden H’cap – 1000m

COSTA BLANCA – Declared a late scratching at 5.50 pm after becoming fractious when being saddled. No deductions were applicable.

PARENZO – Slow to begin. Commenced to hang out from the 800m and progressively hung worse approaching the home turn and took no competitive part from the 500m onwards. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Connections were advised that the horse must trial satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start.

MUFASTA – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground. Stewards asked jockey J. Orman to comment on the performance of the gelding. He indicated he had been instructed not to pressure the horse out of the barriers and added when tightened for room at the start he was obliged to race at the tail of the field. Jockey Orman further stated that as this was its first start he was required to pressure his mount in order to attempt to remain in contact with the main body of the field, however when placed under pressure in the home straight, finished the race off well, and, in his opinion, he would expect a more forward showing when stepped up over longer distances.

CAPE HELLES – Obliged to shift out near the 300m to avoid heels.

SWISS RUBY – Raced 3 wide without cover.

ASTROBABY – Raced wide.

Race 2: 470 Group QTIS 2YO H’cap – 1000m

SPIRITUAL ROSE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Jockey M. McGillivray was asked to comment on the performance of the filly. He indicated his mount began awkwardly and was unable to muster early pace despite his urgings. He then allowed the filly to settle for a short period at the 800m, however pressured it from that point and SPIRITUAL ROSE responded strongly and finished the race off well. He added stepping the filly up over longer distances would be beneficial, in his opinion.

KALIK – When weakening approaching the 500m was placed in restricted room and was steadied.

FA FA – Hung out from the 700m. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding regarding its racing manners.

CONQUER MEE – Apprentice S. Lacy reported her mount raced greenly throughout.

BLUE ODYSSEY – Raced wide without cover.

LADY APPLETON – Raced wide throughout without cover.

SPIRIT RICH – Raced wide.

Race 3: Jensen Electrical Class 1 H’cap – 1200m

FISH ‘N’ SNITZ – Jockey J. Orman was fined $300 for returning to scale overweight. Tightened for room between runners on jumping away. Overraced when restrained to obtain cover in the early stages.

STARKERS – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with another runner.

RISING BOOM – A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

MAHRATTA – Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.

Race 4: Ken Mills Toyota Maiden H’cap – 1400m

LADY JEUNE – The start was delayed when the bridle became displaced, resulting in the horse being removed from the barriers and having that gear refitted. Restrained to avoid heels passing the 700m. A short distance later shifted out to again avoid heels.

INTIMISSIMI – Change of tactics. Connections advised the horse would be ridden in a position worse than midfield from the wide alley. The horse was ridden accordingly. Began awkwardly. Shortly after the start put in an awkward stride, resulting in the jockey McGillivray becoming momentarily unbalanced. Laid in under pressure from the 400m onwards.

SHE’S FOR RANSOM – Began awkwardly.

NIGHT WHISPER – Overraced in the early stages. Had some difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn.

ACEME – Bumped and became awkward passing the 500m. Jockey R. Maloney, the rider of ROAD STORM, was reprimanded for this incident when he allowed his mount to shift out when not sufficiently clear. Obliged to steady when placed in restricted room when leaving the 400m.

TAVISFACTION – Bumped and became awkward passing the 500m.

OMNIA TIDAK – Held up rounding the home turn.

ROAD STORM – Jockey R. Maloney was asked to explain the tactics adopted, which resulted in the horse being 3 wide before being pressured to improve to a position outside the lead near the 800m. He explained that he had been instructed to be positive from the barriers and obtain a forward position, and in the early stages he felt he would have opportunity to shift closer to the fence as he anticipated that ACEME would shift to the fence behind BEST FOOT FORWARD. However, when this did not occur he elected to restrain and attempt to secure a trailing position behind ACEME, adding when the field left the 1200m other runners had improved to his inside and he was unable to shift across to obtain a closer position to the fence. It was at this point he elected to stride forward to the lead to secure a position closer to the fence. R. Maloney further added that, in his opinion, this had a detrimental effect on the horse’s overall performance. Stewards again after perusing the footage were satisfied with the explanation tendered and felt that jockey Maloney’s actions were not unreasonable.

Race 5: KJ Bolt Trade Fasteners Benchmark 65 H’cap – 1400m

IT AIN’T ALL HONEY – Shortly after the start became awkward and had to be steadied from Heels.

COPYWRITER – Overraced in the early stages when restrained to obtain cover before shifting to a 3 wide position without cover to avoid heels near the 700m. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

WHODUNNIT – Hung out throughout the event, more so under pressure in the home straight.

Race 6: BA Murphy Constructions Class 3 Plate – 1000m

TIPPING – Jockey R. Wiggins was examined by the doctor and stood down from his engagement and was replaced by M. McGillivray. Obliged to race in restricted room in the early stages, and then raced 3 wide without cover.

HI FIVER – Slow to begin and lost significant ground.

WIRED – Raced 4 wide without cover. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Race 7: Accurate Pest Management Class 1 H’cap – 1600m

JET’N’WILD – Trainer N. Hocking was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time.

PROPOSED – Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously approaching the 1400m when being restrained, and then checked from heels when the pace slackened near the 1000m. Continued to race ungenerously and then laid in from the 600m onwards. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery with moderate dehydration.

CHICAGO NIGHTS – Slow to begin. When overracing shifted wider near the 1000m and then raced 3 wide without cover from that point onwards.

WILLY BE LUCKY – Overraced when restrained to obtain cover in the early stages, and was then obliged to steady from heels when the pace slackened near the 1000m. Apprentice M. Nakao, the rider of DEE CEE DELIGHTS, was reprimanded for this incident.

SPECIAL THING – Inconvenienced over the concluding stages.
