Race 1: FENCEPAC CLASS 4 H'CAP – 1400M
The start of this race was delayed when the near fore plate on AMERICAN GENIUS had to be refitted behind the barriers.
SAXTON ROCK – Stewards questioned apprentice E. Atkinson regarding the tactics she adopted. She indicated that she had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position and after beginning well did pressure the horse for a number of strides, however, when ELTIZAAM and AMERICAN GENIUS improved quickly to her inside she did not feel she would be able to cross those horses without using too much of her horse in the early stages and therefore elected to restrain in an attempt to obtain cover at a point near the 1300m. She indicated that she persisted in an attempt to obtain cover until approaching the 1000m, however, when the horse continued to overrace and it became apparent she was unable to obtain cover she then attempted to stride forward again to attempt to again cross to the lead, ultimately being unsuccessful and being obliged to race three wide without cover. Stewards advised apprentice Atkinson that in their opinion she had erred in not persisting more in the early stages in an attempt to cross to the lead, however, did not feel that her actions were unreasonable in the circumstances given her status as an apprentice and her relative inexperience and took no further action.
AMERICAN GENIUS – J. Bayliss stated that the horse travelled comfortably in the early stages of the race, however, when challenged for the lead from the 600m commenced to weaken and did not respond to his riding at any stage over the concluding stages. Jockey Bayliss could not offer any explanation for the performance, which in his opinion was quite disappointing. Trainer S. O’Dea advised that he would discuss the horse’s immediate racing future with the owners and undertook to notify stewards should anything come to light in ensuing days which may have had an effect on the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
ROSENDAHL ROAD – Tightened for room on jumping away and had to be steadied. Raced three wide throughout.
HARD RULER – Overraced for a short distance near the 1100m.
RED BALTER – N. Day reported that at no stage of the race did the horse travel comfortably. He noted that the horse’s form is on more rain-affected surfaces than that of today. Trainer A. Williamson indicated that he would report back anything that may come to light in coming days and that the horse would have a further jump-out or official trial prior to racing again. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.
Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to GOOD 4.
Race 2: BUDERIM MECHANICAL C,G&E CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M
PAY WITH CASH – Slow to begin. Checked to avoid the heels of THE CARPENTER shortly after the start. S. Galloway, the rider of THE CARPENTER, was severely reprimanded for shifting in when not sufficiently clear at that point. Overraced and was green, refusing to settle through the early and middle stages and as a result shifted very wide on the track after passing the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Connections were advised that the horse must officially trial prior to its next start.
FAT MAX – Shifted out significantly under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice N. Keal was reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten his mount.

LA TRIOLI – Jumped awkwardly. Had some difficulty securing clear running near the 350m and became unbalanced. Stewards asked jockey R. Wiggins to comment on the tactics adopted as the horse settled further back in the field than anticipated. Jockey Wiggins indicated that he had intended to settle in a more forward position, however, when caught wide in the early stages he elected to steady to obtain cover closer to the fence.
ROZEIRA – Jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. Placed in restricted room for a short distance passing the 500m.
UNUSUAL AUNT – E. Ljung reported that her mount raced greenly throughout and shifted in abruptly near the 500m and then laid in in the home straight, placing her at a disadvantage.
FIRST DAWN – Inconvenienced on jumping away.
Race 4: ACTIVE SPARKIES MAIDEN H'CAP – 1300M
The start of this race was delayed when MISS MASH reared over whilst parading, became cast in the enclosure fence, dislodging its rider, before undergoing a veterinary examination and being declared a late scratching at 2:32 pm by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice that the horse had sustained a cut to the lower off fore leg. Trainer C. Munce was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.
The start was further delayed when BEAUREGARD, which also dislodged the rider after taking fright in the enclosure when MISS MASH reared, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field.
An additional delay to the start occurred when BEAUREGARD was again examined by the veterinary surgeon after arriving at the barriers and passed fit to start, and when EVER SPRING required farrier attention behind the barriers.
On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on MISS MASH be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 2:32 pm:
