Laid out under pressure in the home straight. Trainer A Jones was advised a warning would be placed on the filly’s racing manners for hanging out. HEEYA – Began awkwardly. Near the 1500 meters when being restrained to obtain cover shifted out marginally and clipped the off-side heel of SIGNAL ROW, blundered and lost ground. Rider C Caserta stated that the slow early tempo of the race did not suit HEEYA, and when attempting to improve into the race from the 700 meters was forced wider on the track and when placed under pressure only finished the race off fairly. MONT ROYAL – Raced three wide in the early stages. When asked to explain tactics in the early stages of the event when it appeared he would obtain the lead easily on MONT ROYAL before electing to restrain, apprentice S Tomlinson stated instructions were to obtain cover if possible, however when SIGNAL ROW commenced to over-race to his inside he elected to restrain for a short distance before soon after near the 1200 meters allowing MONT ROYAL to stride forward to the position outside the leader. After Stewards expressed their concerns to Apprentice S Tomlinson, he agreed he would have been better served to allow MONT ROYAL to progress forward to lead the event at that point rather than initially restrain. Stewards inquired into the reasons for rider Bradley Appo being dislodged near the 500 metres, it was established that near the 600 meters ROULETTE suffered a bleeding attack, became awkward in its action, and commenced to weaken before racing tight to the inside of BURGUNDY RULES, which shifted in slightly approaching the 500 metres causing contact between these two runners. Shortly afterwards ROULETTE blundered resulting in rider Bradley Appo being dislodged. Stewards were satisfied the contact with BURGUNDY RULES was of little consequence and ruled that the bleeding attack suffered by ROULETTE had caused the gelding to become awkward in its action and resulted in the horse becoming unbalanced and blundering. A post-race veterinary examination confirmed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils. As this was the second occasion that ROULETTE had bled in its racing career the gelding will incur a lifetime ban from racing under AR 79(6).
