This decision was made to reduce the possibility of horses’ slipping on jumping away. DON'T DESPAIR – Jumped out at the start. CABOCHON LIL – Tightened for room on jumping and lost ground. SHEBRINGZIT – Tightened for room on jumping and lost ground. WAIKATO – Over-raced and proved very difficult to settle in the early and middle stages of the event. Rider S Cormack reported in hindsight he may have been better served in allowing WAIKATO stride forward from the 1200 metres when the pace of the race steadied. Trainer S Cole was advised a warning would be placed on the racing manners of WAIKATO. Race 2: COASTLINE BMW Fillies & Mares BENCHMARK 60 Handicap 1000 metres SHE'S A TIGRESS – Laid out rounding the home turn. MAGIC DELTA – Began awkwardly. CHICADILLY – Jumped out at the start and bumped FIFTY FOUR SQUARES. FIFTY FOUR SQUARES – Bumped on jumping. Momentarily taken wider on the track near the 700 metres when SHE’S A TIGRESS shifted out to improve. J Molloy, rider of SHE’S A TIGRESS, was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances. Race 3: BATHERSBY LEGAL Colts, Geldings & Entires BENCHMARK 60 Handicap 1000 metres MASTER RED – Slow to begin. Hung out rounding the home turn. Raced wide throughout the event. AZIZ JAMIL COUREUR – Slow to begin. HUGE ACTION – Jumped out at the start and bumped heavily with ARRIVERDERCI ROMA. Raced three wide without cover for majority of the event. SQUIRREL HUNTER (NZ) – Raced wide throughout the event. MINT STRIP – Slow to begin. DRATINI – Over-raced in the early stages when being restrained. Raced wide throughout the event. I'M JACKO – Raced three wide with cover for majority of the event. Over-raced in the middle stages and had to be steadied from heels near the 500 metres. ARRIVERDERCI ROMA – Bumped heavily on jumping. LOGAN’S BLADE – When asked to comment on the apparent improved performance, Trainer A Sawden advised that at its most recent start at Doomben the horse did not appreciate racing amongst other runners and that instructions today were to be more positive and race in a forward position. Mr Sawden added with the addition of blinkers tonight he was confident of a forward showing. Stewards noted the explanation. NO BETTER AFFAIRE – Following the horses’ performance tonight Trainer D Hansen advised it would now be his intention to spell NO BETTER AFFAIRE. Race 4: CARGO TRANSPORT SYSTEMS Class 2 Handicap 1200 metres PHANTOM SPIRIT – After working hard to the barriers underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start. GAUNTLET – Began awkwardly. Rider J Orman reported the horse may have got its tongue over the bit during the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed abnormal respiratory noises. Trainer C Anderson was advised GAUNTLET would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start, including satisfactory results of an endoscopic examination. MILITARY KINGS – Slow to begin. Race 5: SKYLINE SURVEYORS Class 1 Plate 1600 metres JAKKALBERRY FINN (NZ) – Hung out rounding the home turn. Near the 300 metres was bumped on the hindquarters by MADAME MO. Raced three wide with cover throughout the event. JETT AUSTIN (NZ) – Raced three wide without cover throughout the event. Taken wider near the 300 metres and bumped with MADAME MO. LUVYOUANYTIME – After passing the 1300 metres raced in restricted room and near the 1200 metres was restrained from heels and had to be steadied. Near the 300 metres had to be restrained and was obliged to shift in to avoid the heels of MADAME MO. NORTHERN WOODS (NZ) – Lost near fore plate in running. When weakening was crowded for room near the 300 metres and was steadied. MADAME MO – Near the 300 metres, whist being inclined to lay in, was directed out by its rider to secure clear running and in doing so bumped the hindquarters of JAKKALBERRY FINN and had to be checked before being shifted in and making contact with JETT AUSTIN. COLLAY'S SPIRIT (NZ) – Slow to begin. Shifted out to improve passing the 300 metres. CONGENIAL MISTRESS – Slow to begin. CRAIGLEA KARLY – Slow to begin. Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight. FAY CONQUERS ALL – Held up approaching the home turn and the early stages of the home straight. Race 6: WALSH CONSULTING ENGINEERS Maiden Handicap 1600 metres VANCOUVER RIVER – Raced three wide for the majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. OSLEN (NZ) – Worked keenly to the barriers. Slow to begin. When asked to comment on the performance rider R Maloney stated the horse did not travel comfortably and was under pressure from the 600 metres and was disappointing from that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery and signs of heat stress. Trainer D Vandyke was advised OLSEN would be required to satisfactorily trial prior to its next race start. IDLING BY – Raced three wide for the majority of the event. CUE TO CONQUER – Raced three wide for the majority of the event. Bumped over the concluding stages when VANCOUVER ROSE laid in under pressure. ENTERPRISE MAXIMUS – After being slow to begin was inconvenienced shortly after the start. ZOFF THE BOSS – Inconvenienced shortly after the start. Race 7: BRAD READ DESIGN QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1600 metres HEAR HEAR – Bumped on jumping and lost ground. SIGNAL ROW – Jumped out at the start. TAVISTOCK SQUARE (NZ) – Slow to begin. Momentarily held up rounding the home turn. Near the 200 metres laid out and became awkwardly placed at the heels of FEAR THE KNIGHT. FEAR THE NIGHT – Bumped on jumping and lost ground. Over-raced in the early and middle stages.
