OUR CASTAWAY – Stewards questioned jockey M Du Plessis regarding the tactics adopted throughout and particularly from the 500m onwards. Jockey M Du Plessis advised that after passing the 1200m, the pace slackened and as a result he was obliged to steady from heels. He then indicted in order to improve from approaching the 600m, he was obliged to initiate contact with AWAIT THE STORM forcing that horse wider. He further stated that from the 500m his mount was awkward and had a tendency to lay in when asked to quicken and after having initially looked to improve to the outside of BENGAL BANDIT, he was unable to obtain this run due to the horse laying in and when an opportunity to improve to the inside of BENGAL BANDIT presented itself, he shifted in to secure this position after passing the 200m. He added that in his opinion, the pace of the race in the middle stages had a detrimental affect and the gelding would benefit from a further step up in distance. Stewards noted the comments. SIMON SAYS – Slow to begin. Steadied from heels and bumped with GINJA on several occasions when the pace slackened in the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding who weakened noticeably in the straight revealed atrial fibrillation.
