Race 1: I LOVE TURF Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap 1000 metres EIGHT CYLINDERS (NZ) – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Stewards asked jockey M. Powell to comment on the disappointing performance of the gelding, he stated that in his opinion the horse was quite immature, raced greenly in the middle stages and failed to respond to his riding in the home straight. AIR OF ALSACE (NZ) – Began awkwardly, lost ground. A post-race veterinary examination determined there was no abnormalities. When asked to comment on the mare’s performance, trainer K. Fogden indicated that the horse raced best when ridden in a more forward position and she felt that being settled at the tail of the field had a detrimental effect on the horse’s finishing effort. Stewards interviewed C. Bayliss regarding the tactics adopted, he explained that his pre-race intention had been to ride in a more positive position however, when the mare began awkwardly he formed the view that he would have to overly pressure the horse to obtain a forward position and elected to steady and take up a position at the tail of the field. Stewards accepted jockey C. Bayliss’ explanation. CONFINED THOUGHTS – Obliged to steady from heels leaving the 1200m when the pace slackened.
