GENERAL
Stewards approved the following overweights:
Race 4. J. Stanley +0.5kg
Race 8. J. Orman +0.5kg

Race 1: LIEBKE BUILDERS QTIS Two-Year-Old Class 1 Handicap 1400 metres

MASTERPLAN – Began awkwardly and bumped MISHANI LIGHT.

SMART RECOGNITION – Had a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages. Lost the near fore plate in running.  Jockey J. Orman stated that the gelding travelled well until placed under pressure in the home straight and failed to respond to his riding. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying clinical signs of the thumps.

MISHANI LIGHT – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1200m, became unbalanced momentarily. When queried on the tactics adopted, jockey B. Thompson advised Stewards that it was the intention from the inside barrier in a small field to try and hold a forward position with cover. He added that when BETTY BEERS who he envisioned to lead the event, did not show sufficient speed to cross in the early stages, he elected to hold the leading position. Rider Thompson also stated that the gelding raced greenly throughout and in hindsight maybe better suited racing with cover.  Trainer L. Ross advised that MISHANI LIGHT would now be leaving his stable.

SHARP DAZZLER – Raced wide throughout.

SHOWDRA – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 200m was obliged to shift inwards to secure clear running.

BETTY BEERS – Began awkwardly and contacted the outside barrier partition.

Race 2: HIGGINS QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1200 metres

Campton advised that PANGAEA would undergo an endoscopic examination prior to racing again. Mr Campton further advised that the gelding may likely be spelled. Stewards advised Mr Campton to forward the veterinary results to them as soon as practicable.

DWINDLING SPIRIT – Leaving the 900m had to be checked from the heels of LADY LETHAN, which was carried inwards by MISS ZERMATT. Apprentice A. Jones, the rider of MISS ZERMATT, pled guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) in that she permitted her mount to shift in leaving the 900m when insufficiently clear of LADY LETHAN, which resulted in that runner being taken inwards and tightening the running room of DWINDLING SPIRIT which had to be checked. Stewards suspended apprentice A. Jones’s license to ride in races for nine days beginning at midnight the 24th of June 2023, and ending the 3rd of July 2023. Ms Jones was advised of her right to an appeal. Approaching the 500m shifted out to improve and contacted LADY LETHAN.

KINGSTON'S HERE – When asked to comment, jockey D. Thornton could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. Trainer S. Kendrick advised Stewards that he will report back on the gelding’s condition and future plans in the coming days.

ALVIN THE BOLD – Jockey B. Thompson advised that the gelding travelled well during the event, however, he was obliged to race on inferior going in the home straight which he attributed to ALVIN THE BOLD not finishing the race off as well as expected.

BALMAURICE – Slow to begin.

BANANA SLIDE – Began awkwardly. When asked to comment on his riding in the home straight, jockey D. Thornton advised that with the rail out 10 metres, and bearing in mind the instructions issued, he felt that he would have had to shift significantly wider in the home straight and into inferior going, and he decided to avail himself to runs that presented closer to the rail. Stewards noted jockey Thornton’s explanation.

Trainer L. Abbott was advised to inform Stewards if anything comes to light that may have had an impact on the gelding’s performance in the coming days.
