SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From Sunshine Coast 27/8/2023:

Stewards today finalised an inquiry that was adjourned regarding the tactics adopted by rider J. Orman in the home straight on GROOMED in Race 6. When questioned, Jockey Orman advised that the gelding had failed to quicken when asked for an effort which resulted in GROOMED then being disappointed for a run when EVERLASTING STARS commence to shift inwards leaving the 300m. Jockey J Orman further added that he then elected to shift to the outside of EVERLASTING STARS approaching the 150m as he was concerned that EVERLASTING STARS would continue to shift in and would be held up for clear running if he elected to try and secure a run to the inside of that runner. After careful evaluation of the evidence provided during the inquiry, as well as making investigations regarding the betting relating to this event, Stewards elected to take no further action other than to note the explanation provided by jockey J. Orman.

GENERAL

As L Tarrant was suffering effects of dehydration and unable to fulfill all riding engagements at the Toowoomba meeting on 28th October, he was examined by the Club doctor prior to Race 1 and cleared to ride at today’s meeting.

Race 1: COOLUM BEACH MITRE 10 MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000M

DAZZLING ILLUSION – Raced wide without cover throughout.

Maloney was fined $200 pursuant to AR190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight. Slow to begin. Over raced for a short distance between the 600m and the 400m. Held up for clear running from rounding the home turn until approaching 200m.

WARRIORESS – When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey R. Maloney stated that the mare travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages, however when pressured approaching the 300m, failed to let down as expected and was somewhat disappointing. Jockey Maloney added that in his opinion WARRIORESS may not have appreciated today’s racing surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

BAG OF WHITT – Sustained a laceration to the off-side cheek when being transported to the track, underwent a veterinary examination on arrival on course and was cleared to start.  As a result of this condition, Stewards granted permission for the gelding to race without the off-side bubble cheeker. BAG OF WHITT was again examined by the veterinary surgeon following its preliminary and on arrival at the barriers and was cleared to start.

Race 3: BOQ COOLUM BEACH CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1300M

CHAMPAGNE POP – Began very awkwardly and lost ground. Laid out and raced ungenerously between the 800m and the 400m.

AFSOON – Shifted in at the start and bumped BIG TICKET BOY. Jockey M. Hellyer reported that his mount commenced to over-race shortly after the start and was unable to restrain AFSOON to a position with cover, and for this reason he allowed the horse to stride forward to the position outside the leader near the 1400m.

Race 5: MADILLS MOTOR GROUP QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1400M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed allowing R. Dolan, the rider of the 2nd placed RICH AGAIN to view the Stewards patrol footage in the home straight. After doing so jockey Dolan elected to take the matter no further, and correct weight was declared on the judge’s semaphored numbers.

Race 7: BUDD'S BUTCHERS COOLUM BEACH BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1800M

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, stewards considered an objection lodged by jockey R. Dolan, rider of the second placed THE LOVE ROCKET against PREFER US (A. Jones) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 100m. Stewards, after hearing evidence from the relevant parties and viewing the stewards patrol footage, found that passing the 100m, PREFER US shifted out under riding, resulting in THE LOVE ROCKET being accidently struck across the nose by the whip of jockey A. Jones. Stewards, whilst acknowledging the outward shift by PREFER US passing the 100m and bearing in mind the proximity to the finish line and the short neck margin, could not be comfortably satisfied that had this incident not occurred that THE LOVE ROCKET would have finished ahead of PREFER US at the conclusion of the event and therefore the objection was dismissed, and correct weight given on the judges semaphored numbers. Jockey A. Jones was advised to exercise greater care when her mounts shift ground under similar circumstances.

Williams, rider of SHOPPING WISE, was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted particularly in the early stages with her decision to race outside the leader, Apprentice C. Graham stated at the horse’s previous start it had been slow to begin and that today after beginning well and with limited speed shown by runners drawn to her inside, she allowed TONI TOO to progress forward and race in forward position.
