ELLE MAGIC – Took charge of its rider in the preliminary and underwent a pre race veterinary examination on arrival at the barriers and was cleared to start. Stewards interviewed apprentice E. Lang regarding this incident, apprentice Lang indicated that the mare may have resented the tongue control bit which had been added to the gear before this event. She also stated that the difficulty she had in restraining ELLE MAGIC was exacerbated by her use of the off side rein being limited due to the noseband being fitted over this rein, restricting her ability to restrain the mare. Stewards drew these concerns to the attention of trainer S. Forster, who indicated that he would now be removing the tongue control bit from the gear of the mare. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying clinical signs of heat stress.
