GENERAL
Race 2 & 5: Trainer D. Hansen pleaded guilty to charge LR 68 (1) in that he failed to scratch KWIK AZ HELL and FINAL SELECTION by the prescribed time. Mr Hansen was subsequently fined the sum of $500. In assessing penalty stewards took into account that the failure to scratch had cost an emergency a run in both races.
 
As Jockey W. O’Connell was unable to make his ride in Race 5 due to acceptable reasons, Stewards permitted Jockey N. Thomas to replace him.
 
Race 1: PFD FOODSERVICES QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000 M
 
KEEP SAFE – Apprentice C. Graham reported that her mount raced greenly throughout.
 
DASHING HOPE – Improved onto heels leaving the 700m and shifted out, hampering both LADY LUCIFER and BEEN A SECRET, continued to over race and was held up rounding the home turn until approaching the 300m.
 
LADY LUCIFER – Slow to begin. Hampered near the 700m.
 
MISSISSIPPI ALIBI – Began awkwardly, hampered shortly after and lost ground. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey M. Kennedy stated she had to pressure the horse throughout the event in order to hold a trailing position.
 
BEEN A SECRET – Hampered and forced wider near the 700m. Raced wide throughout.
 
HEARTS ARE RACING – Raced wide throughout.
 
Race 2: THE BRANDING OFFICE BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1000 M
 
LITTLE VISTA – Began awkwardly. Improved onto heels approaching the 800m.
 
BELISTIC MAN – Lost near hind plate in running.
 
EXTREMAARTY – Hampered after the start. Raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
ROCK DIAMOND – Held up for clear running between the 200m and 300m.
 
PIANIST – Had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home straight and until passing the 300m.
 
PINK CASHMERE – Slow to begin. Held up rounding the home turn and until leaving the 300m.
 
MALTALI – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
SHAJAEA – Began awkwardly.
 
Race 3: HEADLAND GLASS MAIDEN PLATE 1400 M
 
DUKE OF LANCASTER – Hampered after the start.
 
DURBAN HARBOUR – Jockey J. Bayliss reported that his mount raced greenly throughout the event. Obliged to check near the 300m after improving onto the heels of the weakening RICHKISS and had difficulty securing clear running until the 200m.
 
ROTHESAY'S LAD – Raced wide throughout. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
 
RICHKISS – Over raced whilst leading approaching the 1000m.
 
GOOD KARMA – Raced wide throughout. Trainer P. Jenkins was reprimanded pursuant to LR 28(1) for failing to present his Thoroughbred Identification Card.
 
LORD LOUISON – After passing the 1200m whilst over racing, was obliged to steady from the heels of SMOKE ‘N’ OAKUM which shifted in momentarily. Continued to over race during the middle stages.
 
Race 4: GRAMBOWER CONCRETE CONSTRUCTIONS BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP 1400 M
 
MOONAN ME – Raced wide throughout.
 
ALLEZ ZOU (NZ) – Jockey J. Orman reported that it was not his intention to lead, however when unable to obtain a position close to the fence in the early stages, he elected to allow his mount to stride forward.
 
I AM LETHAL – Over raced approaching the 800m and improved into restricted racing room after passing the 600m and as a result, had to be steadied near the 500m. Unable to obtain clear running from the 500m onwards and was unable to be fully tested.
 
RAGING POLE – Restrained from heels near the 500m.
 
MISHANI MISSILE – Raced wide throughout.
 
SINGER SARGENT – Obliged to steady from heels near the 1200m. Steadied from heels approaching the 500m. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey R. Maloney stated after having to restrain from heels in the early and middle stages, when rounding the home turn the gelding was then reluctant to quicken despite his efforts and added that the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages despite being unable to secure clear running. He further stated he recommended to trainer J. Bruce to removal the nose roll from the horse’s gear.
 
IMARICHGIRL (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Held up rounding the home turn and had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 200m.
 
ASHFALL – Began awkwardly.
 
Race 5: ALLCHIN AIRCONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1300 M
 
KNIGHT BATCHELOR – Raced wide throughout. After passing the 400m, inclined to lay in and was obliged to steady from the heels of NEW MAHER which shifted out to avoid PRIVATE TENDER which shifted ground. Lost near fore plate.
 
RELEASE LE MISSILE – Slow to begin. Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
 
WHISKEY AND BEER – Raced wide in the early stages. Jockey M. Hellyer reported it was not his intention to settle so far forward however when caught wide and over-racing during the early stages he elected to stride forward.
 
REIGN OF POWER – Jockey J. Bayliss reported his mount over raced in the early stages and further stated it was not his intention to settle so far forward.
 
HALLSIDE MARTINI – When the pace of the race slackened passing the 800m, steadied from heels and shifted out, racing wide from that point onwards.
 
EPICURIOUS – Significantly slow to begin.
 
Race 6: BATHERSBY LEGAL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1600 M
 
The start of this event was delayed owing to TORQUE LEICA STAR having to be re shod on arrival to the barriers.
 
SOCK'EMSID – Over raced outside the leader during the middle stages.
 
AUTUMN SHOW – Declared a late scratching at 6:09pm on veterinary advice after the gelding was found to have swelling to both front tendons. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared that all bets placed on AUTUMN SHOW to be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st – KARIACTION 9c win, 8c place.
2nd – SET ABLAZE 11c place.
3rd – SOCK’EMSID 8c place.
 
DON QUIXOTE – Raced wide throughout. Forced wider rounding the home turn when KARIACTION shifted out to secure clear running. Raced in restricted room between the 200m and the 100m.
 
SOKUDO – Forced wider rounding the home turn when KARIACTION shifted out to secure clear running.
 
HOT PROFIT – Declared a late scratching at 2:10pm after Trainer G Thornton advised the gelding had a swollen hind leg. Trainer G. Thornton was advised HOT PROFIT would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next start.
 
SET ABLAZE – When the pace slackened near the 1400m, was obliged to steady from the heels of DELORME which lost ground. Had difficulty obtaining clear running near the 200m.
 
TORQUE LEICA STAR – Had to be re-shod on arrival to the barriers. Slow to begin. Approaching the 300m, attempted to improve into a doubtful run to the inside of GOING TO THE SUN and as a consequence shortly thereafter was tightened for room and checked when GOING TO THE SUN shifted in marginally whilst weakening and was then unable to relieve pressure as a result of DELORME improving to that runners outside. In assessing the matter, Stewards advised Apprentice C. Collis to exercise greater care when attempting to secure clear running where there is questionable racing room.
 
INDENTED HEAD – Held up rounding the home turn.
 
Race 7: TAB CLASS 2 HANDICAP 2200 M
 
MR PLUME (NZ) – Whilst weakening in the home straight, was obliged to steady near the 200m when tightened for room between SECRET RED and GIDDY GAN’S JOY which laid in despite the efforts of its rider. Jockey A. Thompson reported his mount did not travel comfortably at any stage during the event and in his opinion proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
TUKI TWELVE – Slow to begin.
 
GIDDY GAN'S JOY – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Trainer S. Foster was advised a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the mare. Apprentice E. Lang was fined $200 pursuant to AR 132(6)(a) for applying her whip forward of her horse’s shoulder on two occasions in the home straight.
 
PLEADEEL – Jockey J. Murphy reported his mount laid out under pressure.
 
WILLNOTQUIT (NZ) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in its near foreleg. Trainer K. Taplin was advised WILLNOTQUIT (NZ) would require a veterinary clearance and a satisfactory trial prior to resuming racing.
