GENERAL
 
Stewards permitted the following overweight at today’s meeting:
Race 4: TRANQUILL BAY - J Orman 56.5kgs (+0.5kg)
 
As both J Bayliss and M McDonald were ill, riding changes were made as per the Race Day summary sheet. Both J Bayliss and M McDonald were advised they will require medical clearances prior to their next race or trial ride.
 
Stewards accepted the reasons tendered by co-trainer M Sears regarding the late rider declaration for AVONE engaged in race 8.
 
Stewards reprimanded co-trainers T&M Sears for failing to scratch dual acceptor AVONE from one of its engagements at today’s meeting by the prescribed time pursuant to LR 36(6).
 
 
Race 1: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP       1000 Metres
 
BALMORAL – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
BETTER NOT FORGET – When asked to comment on the performance rider CJ Graham stated the gelding travelled comfortably during the event but failed to respond to her riding in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
 
COSMO CENTAURUS –- Taken in near the 500m.
 
LARIDAE – After being delayed arriving on course due to transport issues, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Slow to begin.
 
DREAM SMART – Approaching the 600m, when over-racing, improved onto the heels of HEART AND SPIRIT had to restrained.  Raced in restricted room approaching the 500m and had to be steadied from the heels of HEART AND SPIRIT when that runner had to be steadied from the heels of COSMO CENTAURUS.
 
HEART AND SPIRIT – Slow to begin. Passing the 500m raced in restricted room for a short distance and had to be steadied when COSMO CENTAURUS was taken in by BALMORAL (R Maloney). In this incident rider R Maloney was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
 
MARAGICAL – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
SIDLED –- Began awkwardly. Near the 500m steadied from the heels of improved onto the heels of DREAM SMART.
 
 
Race 2: ACCESS INSULATION SUNSHINE COAST QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP   1300 Metres
 
ENTERPRISE DEFENCE – Passing the 800m, after being crossed by TORO STRIKE, shifted out taking THE SUN DANCE wider on the track for a short distance.
 
MISTER BIANCO – Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 700m, when racing keenly, improved to the inside of THE SUN DANCE, shifted in despite the efforts of its rider resulting in OUTTA CONTROL being placed in restricted room and having to be steadied.  Passing the 400m when attempting to shift out to improve, bumped THE SUN DANCE, before altering course to the inside to secure clear running a short distance later. M Rodd, rider of MISTER BIANCO, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
 
THE SUN DANCE – Raced keenly in the early stages.  Passing the 800m, when over-racing, taken wider when ENTERPRISE DEFENCE shifted out. Passing the 400m bumped when MISTER BIANCO attempted to shift out.
 
OUTTA CONTROL – Steadied and lost ground near the 700m when MISTER BIANCO shifted in after improving to the inside of the heels of THE SUN DANCE.
 
ELECTRIC BRAE – Slow to begin.
 
 
Race 3: DOUBLE R GROUP BENCHMARK 90 HANDICAP         2200 Metres
 
CABOCHE (NZ) – Bounded in the air as the start was effected and lost ground. Rider J Orman reported it was his intention to race in a forward position however after being slow to begin settled at the rear of field.
 
TAPILDOODLEDO (NZ) – After being caught wide in the early stages, progressed forward to race in a leading position. Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
 
SOUTHERN STOCK (NZ) – Passing the 1400m left a rearward trailing position, progressed forward to lead the event from the 1200m.
 
TAPPY'S LAD (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages of the event. Near then 1000m bumped and forced wider on the track.
 
SECRET SHEEMA (NZ) – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced keenly in the early stages of the event. Near the 1000m, when over-racing, shifted out bumping TAPPY’S LAD which was taken wider on the track.  
 
BAK DA MAN (NZ) – Near the 800m improved onto heels and had to be steadied.
 
PORT PHILIP – When asked to comment on the performance rider K Wilson-Taylor reported the gelding travelled comfortably during the event, however, did not let down as expected when placed under pressure in the home straight. Trainer M Wilson advised the stable would now consider the current racing preparation of PORT PHILIP and advise stewards accordingly in the coming days.  
 
Race 4: PFD FOODSERVICES NO METRO WINS HANDICAP             1300 Metres
 
DENIED – Change of tactics, to be ridden with cover if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly.
 
MASTER SHOWMAN – Jumped out at the start. Passing the 1200m, when attempting to maintain a one-off position, bumped with TRANQUIL BOY on a number occasions and then commenced to over-race until the 700m.
 
BOWRIDER – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
BOHEMIAN LAD – Had to be steadied from heels approaching the 800m.
 
KOKONOTSU – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Severely checked approaching the 1000m when HOOT’N’HOLLER shifted in abruptly when being restrained by its rider after improving quickly onto the heels of BOWRIDER which was being restrained by its rider. Checked leaving the 900m. Stewards intend to inquire into this incident.
 
LIVING FREE – Jumped out at the start.
 
TRANQUIL BAY – Bumped on jumping. Passing the 1200m, bumped by MASTER SHOWMAN on a number of occasions when that runner was attempting to maintain a one-off position. 
 
HOOT 'N' HOLLER – Commenced to race ungenerously approaching the 1000m shifted in abruptly when attempting to be restrained apprentice Wheeler after improving quickly onto the heels of BOWRIDER which was also being restrained by its rider. Rider B. Wheeler reported the mare hung in for the majority of the race. Trainers’ representative for the Heathcote stable gave an undertaking to report back any condition which may come to light in the coming days.
 
YES TO EXCESS – Crowded between runners at the start and lost ground. Passing the 1000m inconvenienced when racing in restricted room. Steadied from heels approaching the home turn.
 
TATTLE – Jumped in at the start.
 
ALLOW ME – Inconvenienced and steadied near the 1000m.
 
 
Race 5: HIGGINS COATINGS CLASS 3 PLATE         1800 Metres
 
SPRAY GUN – When racing keenly near the 700m, improved to the inside of COUNTER and had to be steadied.
 
COUNTER (GB) – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
 
HECTOR DE MARIS (IRE) – After being caught wide in the early stages progressed forward to race outside the leader from the 1300m.
 
PORT MOURANT – From the wide barrier restrained at the start to a rearward position closer to the rails.
 
ZAPHOD (IRE) – Raced wide in the early stages of the event. Cast its near fore plate in running.
 
HALLSIDE MARTINI – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
 
KISSED BY EVIE – Shifted out under pressure leaving the 200m and bumped ZAPHOD.
 
SUPER CHILLED – From the wide barrier restrained at the start to a rearward position closer to the rails. When asked to comment on the performance, rider J Orman explained from the wide barrier he was obliged to settle in a rearward position adding that SUPER CHILLED was not suited by the pace of the race in the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
HIGHLAND HILL – Tightened between runners shortly after the start and lost ground.
 
SIMPLY REFUSE – Slow to begin. Tightened for room approaching the 1600m when racing in restricted room to the inside of HALLSIDE MARTINI. Stewards intend to inquire into this incident.
 
 
Race 6: BARRIER REEF POOLS OPEN HANDICAP         1400 Metres
 
LEGAL ESPRIT – Laid in under pressure passing the 100m obliging its rider to momentarily stop riding and correct.
 
IRISH SONGS – Rider M Rodd reported the gelding was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages.
 
DEEPOUR – When asked to comment rider J Orman reported the gelding travelled comfortably throughout the race, however when pressured rounding the home turn was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of heat stress and the thumps and was treated accordingly by the on-course veterinarian. Trainer A Campton was advised DEEPOUR would require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race or trial start. Mr Campton indicated DEEPOUR would now be sent for a spell and further he would have his stable veterinarian examine the gelding in the coming days and report back to stewards regarding the condition of DEEPOUR.
 
ESSONNE (NZ) – A post-race veterinary examination revealed a minor laceration to the inside of the off-hind fetlock.
 
CHATTY LADY – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
HOT SPRING GOLD – Crowded at the start. Rider N Beriman reported that with the blinkers off for the first time, the gelding was reluctant to hold a more forward position in the early stages of the event.
 
FLYING TRAPEZE – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. When asked to comment rider CJ Graham stated instructions were to be forward, however after being pressured to hold a forward position, FLYING TRAPEZE raced keenly adding that in her opinion the horse was not suited by todays track conditions.
 
 
 
Race 7: BRC SPRING CARNIVAL ON SALE BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP 1400 Metres
 
I AM LETHAL – Began awkwardly.
 
PORKY – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
 
READY AZZ EVA – Jumped in at the start and bumped SMOOTH TORQUE. When asked to comment on the performance apprentice B Wheeler advised the gelding was under pressure from the 800m and was disappointing in its finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
 
RIMBAUD – Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.
 
HILLCREST AVENUE (IRE) – Apprentice C Collis stated the gelding was first up today and after obtaining the lead in the early stages HILLCREST AVENUE then commenced to raced keenly when PORKY improve to its outside approaching the 1100m.
 
SMOOTH TORQUE – Bumped at the start.
 
MOOTESSA – Raced keenly for some distance in the middle stages.
 
OLD SONG – Slow to begin. Laid out approaching and rounding the home turn.
 
THE KEWESS – Began very awkwardly and lost ground. Held up rounding the home turn. Approaching the 100m was obliged to steady when awkwardly placed at the heels of READY AZZ EVA.
 
REDENTE CHOICE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
Following the running of this event the track was downgraded to a Soft 7.
 
Race 8: MARTIN COLLINS AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP       1000 Metres
 
DEVASTATING – Inconvenienced leaving the 150m when FIND YOUR OWN shifted out when racing greenly. Bumped near the 50m.
 
SPIRIT QUEEN – Taken in by SIMBU at the start.
 
SIMBU – Jumped in at the start. Taken out near the 350m and inconvenienced. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
FEMME FATALE – Began awkwardly. Inconvenienced near the 350m.
 
ENTERPRISE LUCIA – Checked at the start when FIND YOUR OWN jumped out abruptly.
 
TERMAGANT – Fractious in the barriers and then kicked out behind as the start was effected resulting in the mare being slow to begin. Hampered shortly thereafter when ENERPRISE LUCIA was taken outwards. Approaching the 200m inconvenienced by FIND YOUR OWN which shifted in when racing greenly. Approaching the 50m improved onto the heels of SPIRIT OF QUEEN, became awkward and shifted out and bumped DEVASTING and as a result was unable to be tested from that point onwards. 
 
AVONE – Jumped out at the start. Leaving the 350m shifted out and away from FIND YOUR OWN, which was racing greenly and inconvenienced FEMME FATALE.
 
BENCOOLEN – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
GROOMED – Slow to begin.
 
ZAHER (NZ) – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Near the 300m became awkwardly placed at the heels of BENCOOLEN after that gelding was carried out.
 
FIND YOUR OWN – Jumped out abruptly at the start checking runners to the outside. Approaching the 150m, when weakening, became unbalanced and lost ground. Rider M Rodd reported the gelding raced greenly for the majority of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality. Cast its off fore plate in running.
 
SHE’S A ROGUE – Momentarily raced in restricted room leaving the 200m when ENTERPRISE LUCIA laid out and TERMAGENT was taken in by FIND YOUR OWN.
 
 
 
Race 9: CALOUNDRA RSL CLASS 6 HANDICAP         1000 Metres
 
On return to scale a protest was lodged by T Gollan, trainer of second past the post LIQUOR (A Jones) against first past the post MR GALAZI (CJ Graham) alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from the connections of both runners and viewing the patrol footage, it was established near the 50m MR GALAZI shifted out abruptly under pressure, bumping heavily with LIQUOR forcing that runner off its rightful racing line. Bearing in mind the short head margin, the manner in which LIQUOR was finishing the race off combined with the significant bump, Stewards were of the opinion had LIQUOR not been interfered with by MR GALAZI at that point of the race it would have finished in advance of MR GALAZI, and as such the protest was upheld and the placings were amended to read 11-16-2-3 and correct weight declared. 
 
HATCHET – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
GOLDSBOROUGH – Near the 150m steadied from the heels of MR GALAZI which shifted out under pressure. Checked from the heels of MR GALAZI near the 50m when that runner shifted out abruptly under pressure.
 
RICHON – Approaching the winning post had to be checked from the heels of GOLDSBOROUGH when that runner shifted in after being checked from the heels of MR GALAZI.

DEVIL'S THROAT – Slow to begin.
 
LIQUOR – Slow to begin. Bumped heavily approaching the 50m by MR GALAZI, which shifted out under pressure.
 
ZOUMETEOR – On jumping the inside barrier partition sprung back slightly inconveniencing the gelding. The barriers were tested prior to the running of Race 10 and found to be in satisfactory working condition. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
THIS IS ONE – Raced wide for the majority of the event. Lost its near hind plate in running.
 
MR GALAZI – Shifted in when placed under pressure near the 150m. Shifted out abruptly approaching the 50m bumping LIQOUR.
 
 
Race 10: MAEVA HOSPITALITY BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP         1000 Metres
 
CRANKY HARRY – Crowded for room approaching the 900m, contacted the running rail and became unbalanced. Held up rounding the home turn.
 
BOLD BOURBON – Slow to begin.
 
THE RIGHT WAY – Checked approaching the 900m. At a subsequent inquiry B Thornton, rider of PATMOS ISLAND, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that approaching the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when not fully clear of STRIPPED BACK which was awkwardly placed at the heels of PATMOS ISLAND, taking that runner inwards which resulted in THE RIGHT WAY being checked and CRANKY HARRY being crowded for room and contacting the running rail. The licence of B Thornton to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight 10th August up to and including midnight 18th August 2024. Mr Thorton was advised of his appeal rights.
 
CUNNAMULLA FELLA – Raced wide throughout the event.
 
PATMOS ISLAND – Caught wide in the early stages before progressing forward to lead the event passing the 900m.
 
STRIPPED BACK – Began awkwardly. Raced in restricted room approaching the 900m. Raced wide until the passing 900m.
