SUNSHINE COAST TURF CLUB

TUESDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2024

WEATHER – Fine
TRACK RATING –  Good 4
RAIL – +6m entire

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – J. Williamson
Stewards – R. Hanson, S. Heidke, O. Legg, J. Robinson

SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

GENERAL
Stewards permitted the following overweights:
Race 2 – D. Turner +0.5kg
Race 7 – C. Meehan +1kg

Trainer B. Owen was fined $100 pursuant to LR 36(6) for failing to scratch the dual acceptor SILLY SALMON by the prescribed time.

Race 1: LOVE + PARTNERS CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS MAIDEN HANDICAP  1800 M

TRAPEZE TORQUE – Began awkwardly.

EFFIE'S JOY – Slow to begin.

FINE AND RARE – Stewards questioned apprentice R. Thorburn in relation to the tactics adopted as the gelding had led the event from the inside barrier, setting a fast tempo during the first 600m. Apprentice R. Thorburn indicated that he had been instructed to lead from the inside barrier and when challenged by runners to his outside, the gelding over raced and resisted his attempts to restrain and steady the tempo between the 1600m and the 1200m. Stewards accepted the explanation of Apprentice R. Thorburn.

PRIDE OF SAVABELLA – Slow to begin. Shifted out under pressure over the final 100m.

SHOW 'EM NORM – Change of tactics – to be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Raced wide throughout. Stewards questioned Jockey M. Kennedy in relation to the tactics adopted in the early stages, Jockey M. Kennedy advised stewards that she was attempting to comply with instructions in attempting to settle outside the lead and had ridden aggressively in the early stages and was still of the opinion she would be able to cross KHANT QUIT (NZ) when passing the 1600m, however attempted to restrain from the 1300m when it became apparent that KHANT QUIT (NZ) was refusing to settle and she was therefore unable to cross that runner. Stewards advised Jockey M. Kennedy that in their opinion, she had erred in failing to recognise when passing the 1400m that she would be unable to cross KHANT QUIT (NZ) and should have in their opinion, attempted to restrain her mount earlier than she had. However given her instructions, Stewards were not satisfied that this error was so unreasonable as to hold her culpable under the rules and therefore took no further action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

DIVINE CHARM – Slow to begin. Raced wide from the 900m.

KHANT QUIT (NZ) – Over raced during the early and middle stages. Stewards questioned jockey N Thomas in relation to the tactics adopted in the early stages, Jockey N. Thomas explained that the gelding was stepping up to 1800m for the first time and was wearing blinkers, he had therefore anticipated settling outside the lead as he had not felt there was much pace in the event. He indicated that after initially placing pressure on his horse out of the barriers to cross TRAPEZE TALK, he attempted to restrain, KHANT QUIT when approaching the 1600m to allow SHOW ‘EM NORM which had improved to his outside to cross to the lead, however his mount over raced badly and did not respond to his restraint until approaching the 1200m when SHOW ‘EM NORM was then restrained and lost ground to his outside. Stewards accepted the explanation of Jockey N. Thomas.

BEFORE THE THUNDER – Shifted in on jumping. Shortly after the start, was obliged to steady to avoid the heels of LUCKY LENI which shifted in. Jockey C. Bayliss rider of LUCKY LENI was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for this incident. After being steadied shortly after the start, then raced ungenerously, shifted in and away from runners to the outside and as a result, BEFORE THE THUNDER shifted in when approaching the 1100m, tightening both SHAMOUTI and PRIDE OF VENUS. After passing the 1000m, raced ungenerously when obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of LA STELLA ATLETA which shifted in. Jockey D. Smith rider of LA STELLA ATLETA was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.

Approaching the 1100m, tightened for room and had to be checked when racing to the inside of PRIDE OF VENUS which was taken in by BEFORE THE THUNDER which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. ON THE TIGHTROPE – Obliged to race in restricted room near the 1300m when racing to the inside of ROCKED which shifted in.

RED STAR RUBI – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Stewards questioned Apprentice C. Baker regarding the tactics adopted on entering the home straight, where it appeared there was an opportunity to improve to the outside of ALL I WANT IS YOU, however at that point Apprentice Baker elected to ease and shift back to the inside of that runner. Apprentice Baker indicated that she had been instructed to avoid shifting wider on the track in and to attempt to improve into clear running where possible and she was therefore mindful of those instructions when taking this option. Apprentice Baker after viewing the footage of the race, agreed that in hindsight, it would have been a more favourable option to attempt to improve outside ALL I WANT IS YOU at that point of the race. Stewards advised Apprentice Baker that whilst they were of the opinion she had erred at this point, they were not satisfied that her option was so unreasonable considering her instructions and status as an apprentice and took no further action.

Race 5: BEN LIDDELL CONSTRUCTIONS CLASS 3 HANDICAP  1000 M

SHAKO – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted as the horse settled at the rear of the field in contrast to its most recent racing pattern. Jockey C. Bayliss stated that from a wide barrier, he was of the view that the horse would have more natural early speed and had anticipated settling in a more forward position, however it quickly became apparent that he would be unable to cross the runners to his inside and elected to steady in order to obtain a position closer to the fence. Mr Bayliss also added that the horse would appreciate a step up to 1200m.

BILLY'S BRO – Shifted out under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.
