GENERAL
 
Stewards permitted the following overweights at today’s meeting:
Race 8: IMEZAAKI – B Lerena 55kg (+1kg)
 
Stewards accepted the explanation from trainer G Heinrich for the late declaration of rider on BEAST OF BURDEN in Race 2.
 
Trainer N McCall was fined $200 under LR36(6) for failing to scratch dual acceptor LIBERTY STEPS from its engagement in Race 6 by the prescribed time.
 
Trainer J Bruce was reprimanded under LR68(2) for failing scratch LAVONI by the prescribed time.
 
 
Race 1: MUIR DEVELOPMENTS CLASS 1 HANDICAP         1800 M
 
HEREDITARY – From the wide barrier restrained at the start and shifted behind runners to take up a rearward position closer to the rails.
 
LYNCHED – Raced keenly in the middle stages of the event.
 
 
Race 2: SOUTHEAST STAINLESS MAIDEN PLATE         1400 M
 
The start of this was delayed approximately 3 minutes when BEAST OF BURDEN refused to load into the barriers. The gelding was subsequently declared a late scratching 1:47pm and on declaration of correct weight Stewards ordered all bets on BEAST OF BURDEN be refunded in full and the following deductions to apply:
 
1st MIDNIGHT MADNESS – 0c win, 1c place
2nd SILVIO DANTE – 2c place
3rd VICTORY FLAME – 2c place
 
Trainer G Heinrich was advised BEAST OF BURDEN would require a further barrier certificate prior to its next race start.  
 
HERECOMESANTORINI – Cast its near hind plate on route to barriers, was refitted, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
 
MIDNIGHT MADNESS – Leaving the 200m momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of ARATIRI (apprentice J Hampson) which shifted in under riding. Apprentice Hampson was severely reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
 
SHADOW CRUISER – Began awkwardly resulting in rider A Mallyon becoming unbalanced in the saddle.
 
SILVIO DANTE – Bumped at the start and became unbalanced.
 
SWIPER – On arrival at the barriers the saddle on the gelding was readjusted. Momentarily raced in restricted room for a short distance leaving the 1300m.
 
FLYING WARRIOR – Approaching the home turn bumped and became unbalanced by VICTORY FLAME which shifted out to improve. Inconvenienced near the 250m. Raced three wide for the majority of the event.
 
VREDEFORT – Slow to begin. Raced keenly for a short distance near the 800m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
HAS BEAN – Leaving the 400m carried wider when awkwardly placed at the heels of FLYING WARRIOR which shifted out to improve. Approaching the 300m bumped with STRIKE THE Heart. Approaching the 250m had to restrained when tightened for room between FLYING WARRIOR and STRIKE THE HEART which laid in when racing greenly.Raced three wide with cover for the majority of the event.
 
STRIKE THE HEART – Jumped out at the start and bumped SILVIO DANTE. Leaving the 400m became awkwardly placed at the heels of HAS BEAN and had to steadied. Bumped with HAS BEAN near the 300m. Raced greenly and had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight. Co-trainer W Hulbert was advised a warning would be placed on the racing manners of STRIKE THE HEART.
 
TRAPEDO – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn. Lost its off fore plate in running.
 
ARATIRI – Shifted in under pressure leaving the 250m.
 
 
 
Race 3: COASTAL VEHICLE SOLUTIONS BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP       1600 M
 
ZAHER – Bumped at the start. In the presence of master T Gollan and senior rider A Jones, Stewards questioned E Lang, rider of ZAHER, regarding tactics adopted, particularly in her decision to restrain and obtain cover behind MAXIE TAP near the 900m. E Lang advised instructions were to ride the gelding midfield with cover and that in an attempt to comply with these instructions she restrained her mount at that point of the race.  Trainer G Duncan confirmed instructions issued. Stewards, after considering all circumstances, advised apprentice Lang that she had erred in restraining and allowing MAXIE TAP to progress in front of her at the 900m however, bearing in mind her status as an apprentice rider, stewards were of the opinion her ride did not meet the requisite standard that a breach of the rules had occurred and took the matter no further other than to advise apprentice Lang that she should always consider how a race is unfolding and to adapt to instructions that are issued.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
 
BELLA TIVACI – Approaching the 1400m crowded for room and had to be steadied when racing in restricted to the inside of NIGHTSTICK was taken in by ZAHER (E Lang). E Lang was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident. Held up rounding the home turn.
 
NIGHTSTICK – Jumped out at the start and bumped ZAHER. Raced wide from the 800m.
 
MAXIE TAP – Caught wide in the early stages before progressing forward to race outside the leader from the 900m.
 
 
Race 4: SOMMER'S FUEL SUPPLIES QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE        1000 M
 
BRAIDWOOD PRINCE – Inconvenienced when bumped near the 900m.
 
BRUTAL ADVANCE – Hampered leaving the 900m when BETTY MAUD laid out.
 
CAMBRIDGE BAY – After being slow to begin was hampered a short distance later when ABSINTHE CAT shifted out.
 
IMMINENT BOOM – Slow to begin.
 
KENNY THE BAKER – Jumped in at the start. Inconvenienced near the 900m when taken out by BRUTAL ADVANCE. When asked to comment on the performance rider R Stewart advised the gelding raced greenly at various stages of the event, adding that in his opinion KENNY THE BAKER would appreciate a step up distance going forward, and would also derive benefit from the race experience.
 
BETTY MAUD – Slow to begin. Laid out for a short distance leaving the 900m and again rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying symptoms of the thumps.  
 
RARE AND RELIABLE – Hampered at the start when crowded between runners on jumping.
 
THE SOUR – Jumped out at the start. Rider G Cartwright reported the saddle on the filly shifted back during the event placing her at some disadvantage.
 
 
Race 5: MARTIN COLLINS AUSTRALIA CLASS 1 HANDICAP         1000 M
 
BORRELLI – Raced keenly for a short distance near the 800m.
 
EXTREME SPIRIT – Slow to muster speed in the early stages.
 
MERCIAN – Near the 700m raced in restricted room. Held up for clear running between the home turn and 300m.
 
THE GAMBLING GREEK – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
BELEGATO – Near the 900m jumped a shadow on the track and put in an awkward stride. Laid in near the 600m before being corrected by its rider. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
LIKE SMOKE – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
FLY FIFER – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running between the home turn and 300m. Approaching the winning post had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of BELEGATO.
 
OUR DRUMMER – Began awkwardly. Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
BONNET ROUGE – After being loaded into the barriers, became fractious, was removed, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
 
HEAD CASE – Near the 700m raced in restricted room.
 
 
 
Race 6: CALOUNDRA RSL BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP         1200 M
 
DAMO DAYZ – Held up approaching and rounding the home turn. Laid in under pressure approaching the 200m.
 
NO NAME FRANK – Bumped at the start.
 
WINSOME STAR – Leaving the 600m had to be restrained from heels when the pace of the race slackened.
 
SULTRY SIREN – Bumped with BOOMSTER leaving the 300m.Rider reported the mare may, in his opinion, appreciate softer track conditions than that of today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
 
BOOMSTER – Bumped with SULTRY SIREN leaving the 300m. Weakened when placed under pressure in the home straight. Rider C Graham reported the gelding was inclined to race greenly throughout the event, adding BOOMSTER would derive fitness benefit from today’s race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality. Trainer K Schweida gave an undertaking to report back to stewards any condition which may come to light in the coming days.
 
EXTESSIVE – Raced wide with cover throughout the event.
 
INTEGRITY LANE – Began awkwardly and shifted in at the start. Raced keenly for a short distance leaving the 900m. Raced wide without cover throughout the event.
 
 
 
Race 7: SPOT PROUDCTIONS QTIS BENCHMARK 85 HANDICAP    1200 M
 
NED'S GULLY – Bumped with THE INFLICTOR at the start.Raced wide with cover throughout the event.
 
PARTY FOR TWO – When asked to comment on the performance rider B Thornton advised the mare, which was second up today, raced flat and disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
 
THE INFLICTOR – Bumped with NED’S GULLY at the start.Raced wide without cover throughout the event.
 
VIMINELE – Slow to begin.
 
SKIRT THE LAW – When asked to comment on tactics adopted today in leading the event, rider R Maloney advised it was not his intention to lead, however after beginning well from the wide barrier and with limited speed shown by runners drawn to his inside, he allowed SKIRT THE LAW to stride forward and lead the event. Stewards noted the explanation of R Maloney.
 
EPIC PROPORTIONS – When asked to comment on the performance rider K Wilson-Taylor could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance other than the gelding, in his opinion, may appreciate softer track conditions than that of today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
 
IN EVIDENCE – Slow to begin.
 
BAD EDUCATION – Raced keenly in the middle stages.
 
 
 
Race 8: TAB CLASS 3 HANDICAP       1400 M
 
SHARP DAZZLER – From the wide barrier restrained at the start and shifted behind runners to take up a rearward position closer to the rails.
 
LIBERTY STEPS – Jumped in at the start.
 
IVAN’S HERO – Rider R Maloney reported the gelding was somewhat one-paced when placed under pressure in the home straight.
 
KUBWA – Raced keenly when leading the event.A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils for the second time, and as such KUBWA will now incur a lifetime ban from racing under AR 79(6).
 
SHADOW POWER – Crowded between runners at the start and lost ground. Laid in near the 250m and bumped HUSSY EMPRESS.
 
GODZILLA – Began awkwardly.
 
VALANTINO ROC – Raced three wide without cover throughout the event. Approaching the 500m inclined to lay in for a short distance.
 
BOLD SMUGGLER – Raced three wide with cover throughout the event.
 
HUSSY EMPRESS – Jumped out at the start. Leaving the 250m bumped by SHADOW POWER which laid in.
 
IMEZAAKI – Slow to begin. Raced three wide with cover throughout the event.
 
SKYWRITER – Approaching the 200m had to be steadied after improving onto heels.
