STEWARDS REPORT

SUNSHINE COAST TURF CLUB

SATURDAY 25th JANUARY 2025

WEATHER – Fine TRACK RATING – Soft (5); Good (4) after Race 1 RAIL – True
PENETROMETER – 6.45

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – G. Goold
Stewards – J. Williamson, K. Daly, A. Schofield, H. Matthews, J. Robinson

SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Eagle Farm 18th January 2025 Race 7 Trainer J. Mason advised that TORO STRIKE will now undergo knee surgery.

GENERAL
Stewards approved the following overweight:
Race 3. J. Huxtable +0.5kg

Race 1: COASTLINE BMW QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP        1000 Metres

VEGA NOVA – Slow to begin. Whilst racing greenly in the middle stages, shifted in abruptly and contacted the running rail near the 700m.

JAGGERY – Raced wide throughout. Cast the off fore plate.

VAREJO – Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor reported that the gelding raced flat and may not have backed up from a jumpout earlier this week. Stable representative for the Kendrick stable reported that they would monitor how VAREJO pulled up, however would likely continue with the current preparation. A post race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

ALIQUAM – Momentarily held up for clear running near the 500m. Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the home straight until leaving the 200m. After passing the 100m, shifted inwards in an attempt to secure clear running and in doing so became awkwardly placed at heels and went to the line without being fully tested. When questioned regarding the tactics she adopted over the final 150m, jockey S. Rutledge stated that she endeavoured to secure a run between BELLOVE and VEGA NOVA, as she had committed herself to this position leaving the 150m. When questioned as to whether there was opportunity to shift to the outside of BELLOVE approaching the 150m, Ms Rutledge stated that if she continued to shift out at that point she would have become awkwardly placed at the heels of BELLOVE, however in hindsight and after reviewing the footage, she agreed with Stewards that she had erred in not taking the opportunity to shift to the outside of BELLOVE which would then have allowed her mount an unimpeded run to the finish. In assessing her ride over the final 150m, Stewards formed the opinion that this had been an error of judgement, which did not affect the finishing position of ALIQUAM and that this error was not so unreasonable as to be culpable under the rules.

LOVEBUG – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the right foreleg. Trainer W. Bannerot was advised that LOVEBUG will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Following the running of this race, the track was upgraded to a Good (4).
