TOWNSVILLE TURF CLUB STEWARDS REPORT THURSDAY 29/04/04
STEWARDS PANEL: Mr P COOPER (CHAIRMAN), Mr W. Bethel, Mr R. Sanders,

WEATHER: SHOWERS TRACK: - SLOW
RAIL: OUT 3 METRES FROM 1630 METRES TO 1000 METRES AND 4½ METRES FROM 1000 METRES TO 400 METRES, THEN IN TRUE POSITION.
GENERAL:
Townsville Turf Club 22/0404
Trainer Mr T. Cant was fined $50 under A.R.140A for presenting FRONTIER FIGHTER in the enclosure without blinkers.
Late Riding Changes:
Due to transport difficulties Jockey J. P. Stanley was unable to fulfil his riding engagements. Stewards permitted the following substitutions to be made: Race 2, N. Day to ride HIACLA; Race 3, W. Kenning to ride CAUGHT DANCING; Race 4, N. Day to ride ORANGE SMASH; Race 6, S. Shield to ride KINASHASA; race 7, N. Day to ride NORTH FIELD; Race 8, K. Mahoney to ride VARMINT.
RACE 1: – VICTORIA BITTER 3-YEAR-OLD CLASS 6 HANDICAP: 1300 Metres – 4 Starters
After being placed in the barriers ALL GOOD BOYS (K. Mahoney) became fractious and reared over. Acting on veterinary advice stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding at 12.43 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on ALL GOOD BOYS be refunded in full and that all bets made prior to the withdrawal of ALL GOOD BOYS be paid less the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the tickets: win, 20¢, place 21¢. Trainer Mr G. Dickson was advised that ALL GOOD BOYS would not be permitted to race again until it had performed satisfactorily in an official barrier trial.
RACE 2: EMPIRE CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1000 Metres – 7 Starters
Jockey A.Cox (STRAWBERRY KISSES) reported that when he settled his mount back in the field the gelding dropped the bit and failed to race competitively.
Jockey D. Crossland reported that LION PRINCE laid in for the majority of the race.
K. Mahoney, the rider of SILVER NATIVE which finished third, and F. Edwards, the rider of KELSO REEF which finished fourth, were reminded of their obligation to ride their mounts out right to the finish.
RACE 3: CARLTON GOLD MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1000 Metres – 11 Starters
Due to transport difficulties STRICTLY JADE was a late withdrawal, at 12.30 p.m., by order of the stewards.
On jumping BROKEN DREAM (N. Day) shifted in and contacted WINTER SAFARI (K.Mahoney).
At the start BEACH BREAKER (J. Stopps) and ARU (App. P. Hammersley) came together.
Near the 800 metres BEACH BREAKER (J. Stopps) had to be steadied away from the heels of HEART HUNTER (S. Shield).
The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that HEART HUNTER (S. Shield) returned to the enclosure with a small laceration to the outside of the near hind cannon.
RACE 4: CARLTON PREMIUM DRY CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 1400 Metres – 8 Starters
Approaching the 800 metres I. Toward (FIELDS OF THUNDER) permitted his mount to shift in and dictate the line of CANVASS (P. Cullen), which had to be momentarily steadied. I. Toward was advised to exercise more care.
Following the race trainer Mr R. Klingner reported that CANVASS had sustained a laceration to the near hind leg during running.
RACE 5: CARLTON MIDSTRENGTH WEIGHT FOR AGE – 1200 Metres – 5 Starters
ANOTHER DIRECTION (P. Cullen) raced wide throughout.
RACE 6: CARLTON DRAUGHT QUEENSLAND THOROUGHBRED INVESTMENT SCHEME 2-YEAR-OLD - 1200 METRES - 10 STARTERS
Near the 1100 metres AULD FRIEND (F. Edwards) shifted out abruptly and hampered SHE CAN CHA CHA.
P. Cullen was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in approaching the 1100 metres when insufficiently clear of SPEEDY AFFAIR (A. Cox).
When questioned about the poor performance of PAPARAZZI JACK Apprentice P. Hammersley stated that after beginning well he attempted to settle the gelding midfield. He said, however, that PAPARAZZI JACK dropped the bit at about the 650 metres and rounding the home turn and in the straight failed to run on and was disappointing. The explanations were noted.
Jockey F. Edwards reported that AULD FRIEND hung out throughout the event.
RACE 7: SKY BLUE CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1200 METRES - 8 Starters
NORTH FIELD (N. Day) shifted out at the start and bumped ROYAL PUNCH.
Near the 950 metres PALEFACE DREAMER (A. Molino), which was overracing, had to be steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of FLYING BEAUTY (S. Shield) and in doing so made contact with the hindquarters of ALL MONDE. At the same time NO STOP LOSS (W. Kenning) was inclined to hang out.
RACE 8: QRSE CROWN LAGER CLASS 6 HANDICAP - 1960 METRES - 10 Starters
Passing the 1600 metres OUR BULLET (N. Day) commenced to overrace and threw its head about.
Near the 1300 metres THE OUTBACK RAT (A. Molino) improved up onto the heels of OUR BULLET (N. Day) and had to be steadied.
Approaching the 600 metres PALARCHI (P.Hammersley) had to be steadied when OUR BULLET (N. Day) shifted in. Stewards advised Jockey N. Day to show more care in future.
