LATE RIDING CHANGES
When Jockey M. Elliott was ill and unable to fulfil his engagements, substitutions were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey Elliott was advised that he must provide a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again.
Race 1: - Welcome to the Townsville Winter Carnival QTIS 3YO Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – CRAIGLEA VANCE 2nd – ROCKETMOUNTAINHIGH 3rd – MAFIA PRINCESS 4th – DELTA DRAGON
SURAH SURAH (G. Cullen) was re-saddled behind the barriers.
The start was considerably delayed when BUCASIA BEACH (App. E. Ljung) dislodged its rider during its preliminary and galloped a circuit of the course. Acting on veterinary advice that BUCASIA BEACH was unfit to take its place in the field, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding at 1.28 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on BUCASIA BEACH be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:
2¢ in the dollar for the win for the winner, CRAIGLEA VANCE
3¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, CRAIGLEA VANCE
5¢ in the dollar for the place for second, ROCKETMOUNTAIN HIGH
4¢ in the dollar for the place for third, MAFIA PRINCESS
The start was further delayed as a result of BUCASIA BEACH having damaged a section of the running rail near the 950 metres, which had to be repaired.
GOLDEN VEIL (F. Edwards) and CRAIGLEA TEQUILA (App. B. Swaffer) were slow to begin.
On returning to scale Jockey I. Toward reported that from its wide barrier LYNDA’S NEVER LATE failed to muster the speed required to cross the runners drawn to his inside. Jockey Toward added that he elected to obtain a midfield position during the event, which enabled him to race one off the running rail through the middle stages of the event. Jockey Toward said that when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and in the straight LYNDA’S NEVER LATE ran only fairly and proved somewhat disappointing.
Race 2: - The Coffee Club Class 1 Handicap – 1000 Metres
1st – EXCEEDED 2nd - HEART OF STRENGTH 3rd – THE PAPARAZZI 4th – LAGO LIES
GLOUCESTER STORM (D. Hayse) and BLUEPRINT LADY (J. Felix) began awkwardly.
RATTLER’S LAD (P. Cullen) blundered on jumping.
Leaving the 400 metres BARRIER JET (T. Bannon) improved onto the heels of BRASHERE (D. Simmons) and became awkward.
Leaving the 50 metres BARRIER JET was tightened for room and forced to check when racing between LAGO LIES (W. D’Avila) and THE PAPARAZZI (App. E. Ljung), which shifted in whilst being ridden along with the whip. App. Ljung was reprimanded and advised to exercise far greater care in similar circumstances.
Stewards questioned App. K. Grace in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of WISEGUY. App. Grace stated that he was instructed to ride the gelding in a forward position, if possible, in accordance with its customary racing pattern. App. Grace said that the gelding had worked well in the lead-up to today’s event, but after beginning fairly did not show its usual speed and as such was unable to cross runners drawn to its inside. App Grace added that in the middle stages WISEGUY did not feel entirely comfortable in its action and consequently drifted back whilst the remainder of the field advanced to his inside. App. Grace noted that in the home straight when placed under pressure WISEGUY failed to respond to his riding and he was at a loss to explain the horse’s disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination of WISEGUY did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: - Pat Molloy Jewellers BenchMark 79 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – ASSIMILATOR 2nd – ERFAAN 3rd – SURPASSER 4th – WANDERING STAR
The start was delayed when a gear adjustment was required on DAB TOUCH (App. B. Swaffer) prior to it entering the enclosure. This resulted in the horse being late onto the track and consequently causing the delay to the start.
ERFAAN (D. Evans) and DAB TOUCH began awkwardly.
In the early and middle stages of the event CHEW THE FAT (D. Hayse) hung out.
On returning to scale Jockey D. Evans reported that ERFAAN had a tendency to lay in for the majority of the event, and in particular in the home straight.
JAM FANCY (W. D’Avila) lost its near fore plate in running.
Stewards questioned Jockey I. Toward in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of STATION MASTER. Jockey Toward advised that from the wide barrier he was forced to obtain a position towards the rear of the field, where STATION MASTER travelled comfortably for the majority of the event. Jockey Toward said that when placed under pressure rounding the home turn and into the home straight, the gelding ran on only fairly and in his opinion will be better suited in races over longer distances than today’s event. Jockey Toward added that in his opinion the pattern of racing today did not suit horses racing back in the field, which may also have been detrimental to the horse’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination of STATION MASTER did not reveal any abnormalities.
Stewards questioned App. B. Swaffer in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of DAB TOUCH. App. Swaffer advised that the gelding was slow to begin and failed to muster early speed. App. Swaffer further said that the gelding never travelled strongly on the bit at any stage during the event and in his opinion proved disappointing. Stewards will interview trainer Mr G. Dickson in relation to the horse’s performance.
Race 4: – 103.1 Hot FM Class 4 Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – SAFARI 2nd – SHOWMETHEMONEY 3rd – STROM THE RHYTHM 4th – BLAST OUT OF HERE
BARELY AN ANGEL was a late scratching, at 10.35 a.m., by order of the stewards acting on veterinary advice that the gelding had sustained an injury in the float en route to the course and was unfit to take its place in the field. Trainer A. Cameron was advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to BARELY AN ANGEL being permitted to race again.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed when Jockey G. Kliese and trainer G. Farrell made an application under A.R. 134A to have FAINT PRAISE declared a non-starter on the grounds that it had been denied a fair start. After taking statements from the parties involved and from the Official Starter, Stewards found that FAINT PRAISE got its head down in the barrier, began awkwardly and lost considerable ground when the start was effected. Accordingly, stewards found that any interference to FAINT PRAISE was as a result of its own behaviour and the gelding was declared a runner. Stewards declared correct weight on the judge’s numbers.
Near the 200 metres FILLE VILAINE (P. Cullen) was forced to check to avoid the heels of BAZINSKY (I. Toward), which shifted out after being taken out by SAFARI (M. Pegus), which shifted out to obtain clear running from behind the heels of ZIP THE LIP (J. Felix), which shifted in marginally. Jockey Pegus was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 5: – Townsville RSL Qld RSL of the Year Open Handicap – 1960 metres
1st – MORE MORE MORE 2nd – DENWOOD 3rd – SARBI 4th – BARAMUL BULLET
DENWOOD (App. K. Grace) made the turn out of the home straight on the first occasion awkwardly and shifted wider on the track.
Near the 1000 metres NEVZLIN (D. Evans) was forced to ease to avoid the heels of TEDDY BARE (T. O’Hara), which shifted in when not completely clear. Jockey O’Hara was reprimanded and advised to ensure she is clear before shifting ground.
Stewards questioned Apprentice K. Grace and Apprentice S. Wiseman in relation to the tactics on DENWOOD and COMMON OBJECTIVE respectively, whereby in the early and middle stages they led the field by a considerable distance. App. Wiseman advised that she was instructed to obtain a forward position, as per the gelding’s customary racing pattern. App. Wiseman added that COMMON OBJECTIVE over-raced during the early and middle stages and, despite her efforts to restrain the gelding, raced fiercely and further forward of the main body of the field than she had anticipated. App. Grace stated that he was instructed to ride DENWOOD with cover, if possible, however the gelding began well and immediately commenced to race keenly, and continued to do so through the early stages of the event. App. Grace added that passing the winning post on the first occasion it was his intention to allow DENWOOD to stride forward to clear COMMON OBJECTIVE, however the gelding made the turn out of the home straight awkwardly, shifted wider on the track and was unable to cross COMMON OBJECTIVE as he had anticipated. App. Grace said that DENWOOD continued to over-race in the middle stages, despite his endeavours to restrain the gelding, and he was unable to take up a position closer to the main body of the field. Stewards noted the explanations of both riders.
On returning to scale Jockey I. Toward reported that in his opinion BARAMUL BULLET failed to run out the 1960 metres of today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant abnormalities.
Stewards questioned Jockey G. Kliese and trainer K. Baumann in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance of STRATO MOSTRO. Jockey Kliese stated that the gelding settled in a rearward position, as per its customary racing pattern. Jockey Kliese added that the gelding travelled well throughout the event, however was under pressure from the 800 metres and in the home straight ran on only fairly. Trainer K. Baumann advised that whilst he was initially disappointed with the performance of STRATO MOSTRO, but having had the opportunity to watch a replay of the event he was of the view that the gelding was forced to sustain a long run from the 800 metres in today’s event and raced dour over the concluding stages, which he attributed to having worked the horse harder than normal during the week to ensure that STRATO MOSTRO had the required level of fitness to run out the 1960 metres of today’s race. Mr Baumann said further that he intends to nominate STRATO MOSTRO for the Townsville Cup on Saturday week, however before deciding on whether the gelding starts in that event, he will have blood samples taken from the gelding to satisfy himself that STRATO MOSTRO had recovered well from today’s event. Mr Baumann undertook to advise stewards of the results of those blood tests and also to report on the condition of the horse in the days subsequent to today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination of STRATO MOSTRO did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 6: – Tackleworld Townsville Bracelet Fillies and Mares Class 6 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – MAROON BELLS 2nd – TUTUDUMONDE 3rd – DAHARA PRIZE 4th – HOLDONTOYAHORSES
The start was delayed to allow the broadcast of a race at Eagle Farm.
DAILIKA (App. J. Kiskopf) and BELLASPIRIT (D. Hayse) raced wide throughout.
Race 7: - RSL Townsville Cup Day Next Saturday Class 2 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – ROCK ALERT 2nd – DIAMOND BILL 3rd – HEZOFF 4th – MILITARY TIME
At the start ROCK ALERT (D. Evans) and BASHIGA (F. Edwards) were tightened for room between HARLEY JOHN (D. Simmons) and HEZOFF (T. Bannon), which jumped inwards.
Jockey I. Toward pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 100 metres he permitted DIAMOND BILL to shift in when insufficiently clear of HEAVENLY VIEW (App. B. Swaffer), which was tightened for room and had to be checked. Jockey Toward was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 3 meetings, to commence at midnight on 27th July 2013, up to and including midnight on 3rd August 2013
Jockey F. Edwards pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R 137(a) in that near the 350 metres he permitted BASHIGA to shift out when insufficiently clear of SHOTGUN BOOGIE (G. Kliese), which was taken out onto HARLEY JOHN (D. Simmons), which was tightened for room and had to check. Jockey Edwards was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 2 meetings, to commence at midnight on 28th July 2013, up to and including midnight on 3rd August 2013.
Jockey I. Toward pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that leaving the 1000 metres he permitted DIAMOND BILL to shift in when insufficiently clear of SHOTGUN BOOGIE (G. Kliese), which was dictated inwards onto BASHIGA (F. Edwards), resulting in that runner being forced to shift in onto HARLEY JOHN (D. Simmons), which was forced to check and move inwards, dictating BASHIGA in further onto SEEYASOON (P. Cullen), which was severely tightened for room and forced to check. Jockey Toward was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 3 meetings, to be served concurrently with the suspension imposed in respect of a further charge of careless riding today, to commence at midnight on 27th July 2913, up to and including midnight on 3rd August 2013.
