Race 1: - Townsville Windows & Screens QTIS 2-Y-Os Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – ELEMENT OF CHANCE 2nd – CRAIGLEA PLATINUM 3rd – CRAIGLEA DIVINE 4th – DRAGON HART
In the middle stages CRAIGLEA DIVINE (App. S. Fawke) raced greenly.
On returning to scale App. J. Kuskopf reported that DRAGON HART raced greenly throughout.
Race 2: - Ardent Office Equipment Open Handicap – 1200 Metres
1st – GO AMIGO 2nd - CHEVAL ARGENTE 3rd – COUNTERIZE 4th – GENERAL RIPPA
COUNTERIZE (App. J. Kuskopf) began awkwardly and lost ground.
Near the 150 metres COUNTERIZE was inclined to lay in, and as a result was inconvenienced when awkwardly placed on the heels of GO AMIGO (App. S. Wiseman).
Stewards questioned App. Kuskopf and trainer R. Chillemi as to the tactics adopted on COUNTERIZE. App. Kuskopf stated that she had been instructed to allow the gelding to settle off the pace, however after beginning awkwardly and losing ground COUNTERIZE was unable to muster early pace and the gelding got further back than had been intended and resented the kickback from runners in front. App. Kiskopf added that in the middle stages she then rode COUNTERIZE along in an attempt to hold her position and the gelding finished the race off strongly. Trainer R. Chillemi confirmed the instructions given to App. Kuskopf. Mr Chillemi said that on returning to scale App. Kuskopf had advised him that COUNTERIZE had resented the kickback from other runners, but he was of the view that after losing ground at the start App. Kuskopf could have used more vigour on the gelding to keep in touch with the field. Mr Chillemi advised stewards that, in light of the horse’s performance today, he will instruct its rider to rider it more vigorously in future. The comments were noted. A post-race veterinary examination of COUNTERIZE did not reveal any abnormalities.
Race 3: - Racing @ Cluden Sunday 2 Feb Maiden Plate – 1400 metres
1st – MALIBU ROSE 2nd – PALMERSTON NORTH 3rd – SANDBAR JACK 4th – LAKE VERMONT
NAGA VIPER (S. Pawsey) began awkwardly, shifted in and hampered DARING LIGHT (A. Coome), which had been a little slow to begin.
MALIBU ROSE (S. Wilson) was slow to begin.
In the early and middle stages SANDBAR JACK (J. Felix) over-raced.
Approaching the 1200 metres LAKE VERMONT (P. Cullen) had to be checked when tightened for room by PALMERSTON NORTH (T. Bannon), which shifted in and away from CASTLE EXPRESS (G. Kliese), despite the efforts of Jockey Bannon. At a subsequent inquiry stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that any one rider had been responsible for the incident. In the incident DIVINE LUCK (W. D’Avila), DARING LIGHT and MALIBU ROSE, which were racing to the inside of LAKE VERMONT, were inconvenienced as a consequence.
Near the 1000 metres DARLING LIGHT was eased when tightened for room by MALIBU ROSE, which shifted in. Jockey S. Wilson was advised to exercise more care.
Following the race Jockey J. Felix reported that near the 1100 metres the saddle on SANDBAR JACK slipped back.
Near the 350 metres MALIBU ROSE (S. Wilson) dipped.
Race 4: – 4TO FM Class 6 Plate – 1400 metres
1st – MEREDITH 2nd – GWENNIE 3rd – CASTLE EXPRESS 4th – BELLASPIRIT
HOLDONTOYAHORSES (J. Felix) began awkwardly and lost ground.
A warning was placed on the racing manners of JUST THE TONIC (T. Bannon), which shortly after the start shifted in and away from CASTLE EXPRESS (G. Kliese).
Near the 1200 metres JUST THE TONIC (T. Bannon) attempted to buck and as a result took no competitive part in the event. Trainer J. Manzelmann was advised that JUST THE TONIC must perform satisfactorily in a jump-out in the presence of a steward before being permitted to race again.
At the 600 metres HOLDONTOYAHORSES (J. Felix) improved up onto the heels of CASTLE EXPRESS (G. Kliese), which shifted out, forcing DIVINE LUCK (W. D’Avila) wider on the track.
Race 5: – RST Airconditioning BenchMark 60 Handicap – 1630 metres
1st – SNIP PINS LASS 2nd – MANZANITA 3rd – BANDIDAS 4th – LOFTY’S MATE
Prior to the race trainer J. Manzelmann reported that following its most recent start, at Mackay on 11th January 2014, SAVASHA had been examined by the veterinary surgeon who could find no abnormalities. The only explanation Mr Manzelmann could offer for the poor performance of the gelding was that the tongue-tie may not have been properly applied. Public announcements were made accordingly.
SNIP PINS LASS (App. S. Fawke) was slow to begin.
Near the 1400 metres LIL’ RED MONKEY (S. Pawsey) was steadied when tightened for room by MANZANITA (A. Coome), which shifted in. Jockey A. Coome was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
App. S. Fawke pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that near the 200 metres he permitted SNIP PINS LASS to shift in whilst being ridden along when insufficiently clear of LOFTY’S MATE (T. Bannon), which was forced across the running of LIL’ RED MONKEY (S. Pawsey), which was checked and lost its rightful running. App. Fawke was suspended from riding in races for a period covering 7 meetings, to commence at midnight Monday 27th January 2014 up to and including midnight Wednesday 5th February 2014.
Between the 200 metres and the 100 metres LITTLE MISS EVA (P. Cullen) had difficulty obtaining clear running.
Approaching the 450 metres STRICTLY MAGIC (App. B. Swaffer) had to be eased when awkwardly placed on the heels of BANDIDAS (F. Edwards).
Race 6: – TrOpical Ice BenchMark 65 Handicap – 1000 metres
1st – SHADOW LINE 2nd – BOOM SHA LA 3rd – MR BULISTA 4th – NODREMS
The start was slightly delayed when the bandages on SHADOW LINE became unfastened and were removed behind the barriers.
At the start CRAIGLEA TEQUILA (a. Coome), NODREMS (App. S. Fawke) and BLEACHING (App. B. Swaffer) were all tightened for room between SHADOW LINE (G. Kliese) and BOOM SHA LA (App. S. Wiseman), which began awkwardly and shifted out.
Race 7: - Casey Dentist Class 2 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – TOUCH OF ELEGANCE 2nd – PINK ‘N’ BLUE 3rd – ARTIVA 4th – KISS ME QUICK
ITS JUST LAGO (G. Watson) and FIDDY GEE (App. B. Swaffer) were slow to begin.
Near the 1000 metres PUBLIC AFFAIR (App. E. Ljung) was checked when tightened for room between TOUCH OF ELEGANCE (S. Wilson) and CRASHING (P. Cullen), both of which shifted ground slightly. DR PEGASUS (S. Pawsey), which was following, was inconvenienced as a consequence. As stewards could not attribute the incident to any single rider, no further action was taken, however all riders were advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
ALL WINNERS WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED
