GENERAL:

Stewards today conducted stable inspections at the premises of a number of Townsville trainers who had runners engaged for today’s meeting. No breaches of the Australian Rules of Racing were detected.

Race 1: - SKY Racing QTIS 2-Y-O Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – CYCLONE KAN 2nd – MODEL TO EXCEED 3rd – PRETTY VACANT 4th – AVIATOR GIRL

RED ‘N’ YARRA (F. Edwards) missed the start.

PRETTY VACANT (G. Kliese) was slow to begin.

CYCLONE KAN (T. Bannon) was inclined to lay out when placed under pressure in the home straight.

When questioned regarding his riding of PENTHOUSE POPPY in the early stages and as to whether there was an opportunity for him to maintain the lead, Apprentice B. Swaffer stated that he was instructed to find cover with the filly as in its previous starts the filly had a tendency to over-race. App. Swaffer said that after beginning well from his favourable barrier draw he elected to restrain PENTHOUSE POPPY passing the 800 metres and to allow CYCLONE KAN to cross, in an endeavour to ride to instructions. App. Swaffer added that thereafter PENTHOUSE POPPY travelled comfortably, however rounding the home turn was inclined to lay out and when placed under pressure finished the race off only fairly. His explanation was noted.

Race 2: - Emanate Legal Maiden Plate – 1200 Metres
1st – MANUMIT 2nd - ILLUSIONS 3rd – SILVER STAR 4th – FOOLING

FOOLING (App. B. Swaffer) was slow to begin.

ZAHMATA OF HONOUR (A. Spinks) began awkwardly, then pulled hard in the early stages.

Approaching the 800 metres MORE THAN CHARLIE (S. Pawsey) shifted in marginally and made contact with WINDSOR GOLD (G. Watson), resulting in both runners becoming momentarily unbalanced.

YOUNG BASIL (J Felix) laid in throughout the middle stages.

In the early part of the home straight WINDSOR GOLD was held up and unable to obtain clear running.

Over the concluding stages ZAHMATA OF HONOUR shifted in under pressure.

When questioned regarding VICE VERSA (C. Whiteley) racing back in the field, Jockey C. Whiteley explained that after being slow to begin, rather than make use of the gelding, he elected to take up a rearward position near the running rail. Jockey Whiteley said that VICE VERSA travelled comfortably throughout the early and middle stages, however when placed under pressure near the 500 metres failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of VICE VERSA did not reveal any abnormalities.

Following the running of this race, at 2.30 p.m., the track rating was upgraded to a Dead (5).

Race 3: - Sexton Developments Class 4 Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – JAXTER’S BALLET 2nd – LOFTY’S MATE 3rd - WEATHERVANE 4th – GLADIUS

When the start was effected GLADIUS (App. S. Wiseman) stood flat-footed and lost considerable ground (8 Lengths). Trainer Ms L. Ashford was advised that a warning will be placed on the mare’s racing manners and that she must obtain a barrier certificate prior to GLADIUS being permitted to race again.

TREASURE SON (S. Wilson) was slow to begin.

When the tempo slowed passing the 1200 metres LOFTY’S MATE (W. D’Avila) improved onto the heels of JAXTER’S BALLET (App. J. Kuskopf), shifted out and made contact with WEATHERVANE (C. Whiteley).

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted GLADIOS, after missing the start by a considerable distance, App. Wiseman explained that she rode her mount along vigorously in the early stages in an attempt to maintain her position in the field. App. Wiseman said that after she tacked onto the field and, in her opinion, the tempo was slow, she allowed her mount to stride forward in a 3-wide position and assume the lead. App. Wiseman agreed with stewards that in hindsight she should have made a greater effort to remain racing behind the favourite, WEATHERVANE, rather than make excessive use of the mare.

In the home straight WEATHERVANE laid in under pressure.

Race 4: – Strategic Lawyers Class 2 Handicap – 1200 metres
1st – STORM IN A RAINBOW 2nd – PATTO’S GIRL 3rd – SLIPNOT 4th – PINK ‘N’ BLUE

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow App. J. Kuskopf, the rider of PINK ‘N’ BLUE which finished 4th, to view the official video film to determine whether she should lodge an objection against SLIPNOT (App. S. Wiseman) being placed 3rd. Having viewed the video films App. Kuskopf elected not to lodge a protest and correct weight was declared on the judge’s placings.

CANDY MOMENT (S. Wilson) and SPEED DRAGON (App. N. Yadi) began awkwardly.

Approaching the 800 metres CANDY MOMENT (S. Wilson) struck the heels of MIO GEM (C. Whiteley) and blundered. On the evidence it was established that SPEED DRAGON App. Yadi), which was racing keenly to the inside of CANDY MOMENT, shifted out, despite the efforts of its rider, and MIO GEM shifted in marginally. Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that any one rider was responsible for the incident, and bearing in mind the manner in which SPEED DRAGON was racing and the very minor shift by MIO GEM, Stewards took no direct action, however Jockey C. Whiteley was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight PINK ‘N’ BLUE was held up for clear running.

Approaching the winning post PATTO’S GIRL (W. D’Avila) shifted in under pressure and crowded BUCASIA BEACH (App. J. Orman) in onto PINK ‘N’ BLUE.

Race 5: – Jim Roberts Locksmith Pty Ltd Class 3 Plate – 1000 metres
1st – EXAGGERATION 2nd – KINGS ROAD 3rd – SANDBAR JACK 4th – HAITCHQUE

BAZINSKY (App B. Swaffer) and SIMON BON ROCKET (T. Bannon) were slow to begin.

Passing the 800 metres KINGS ROAD (App. J. Orman) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of EXCEEDED (F. Edwards), which shifted in when not completely clear. Jockey Edwards was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

For some distance rounding the home turn PUBLIC AFFAR was held up, then shortly after this had to be steadied when disappointed for a narrow run between SANDBAR JACK and TUPPENY’S OPINION (P. Cullen).

In the early part of the home straight KINGS ROAD had difficulty obtaining clear running.

Jockey G. Kliese, the rider of PUBLIC AFFAIR, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out right to the finish.

Race 6: – A.L.B. Distributors Open Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – SECRET STEALTH 2nd – MEREDITH 3rd – BELLASPIRIT 4th – TAT ZEPHYR

SECRET STEALTH (C. Whiteley) raced keenly in the early stages.

At the start MOB RULE (P. Cullen) shifted out and made contact with BELLASPIRIT (D. Simmons).

When being restrained in the early stages STEEL DRAGON (A. Spinks) was inclined to get its head up.

MIGHTY MITE (App. J. Orman) raced wide throughout and when placed under pressure in the home straight was inclined to lay in.

When questioned as to the poor performance of STRATO MOSTRO, Jockey G. Kliese explained that the gelding travelled comfortably in a rearward position throughout, in accordance with its normal racing pattern. Jockey Kliese said that passing the 500 metres STRATO MOSTRO blundered and thereafter was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding did not reveal any abnormalities.

Race 7: - Hurle Family BenchMark 60 Handicap – 1400 metres
1st – DE LA SOUL 2nd – MISS MAGIC CHINE 3rd – FRAIDSO 4th – MILITARY TIME

A pre-race veterinary examination of LIBERTY’S MAGIC, which was showing a poor post-race recovery rate following its 10th out of 10 placing, beaten 12.1 lengths in a BenchMark 60 Handicap over 1200 metres at Atherton on Saturday, 29th March 2014, did not reveal any abnormalities and the gelding was cleared to take its place in the field. Public announcements were made to that effect.

The start was delayed when the gear on KERCHINGS was adjusted behind the barriers.

LIBERTY’S MAGIC (App. S. Wiseman) was slow to begin.

In the early stages TETE DE SEAU (S. Pawsey) raced greenly.

MILITARY TIME (App. B. Swaffer) was held up in the early part of the straight and had to be shifted out to obtain clear running, and in doing so made contact with SAVASHA (T. Bannon).

SAVASHA raced wide throughout.

A post-race veterinary examination of LOOK AT CHU revealed that the gelding was lame in the near fore fetlock. Trainer J. O’Dea will be advised that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to LOOK AT CHU being permitted to race again.
