Thomson explained that whilst the mare worked hard to hold a position in the early and middle stages, ALL BAR LILY failed to respond to her hard riding in the home straight and in her opinion was disappointing. Trainer J. Hassett explained to stewards that she felt the mare may have become agitated prior to the race, following a long delay due to a rider being injured and this may have had a bearing on the mare’s performance. She added that in her opinion ALL BAR LILY may have resented the tongue-tie, and undertook to experiment with further gear changes prior to the horse’s next race start, and she would monitor the mare’s progress in the following days.

Due to Apprentice Z White being injured riding replacements were made as per Stewards Race Day Summary.

I WANNA BREAK FREE – Inconvenienced when bumped by another runner at the start and lost ground.

SABA LASS –  Shifted in marginally near the 500 metres and inconvenienced another runner. Raced 3 wide without cover for the majority of the race. Stewards questioned Apprentice A Thomson in the presence of her master Mr F Wieland and Trainer of SABA LASS Mr J Manzelmann into her riding of the mare over the concluding stages of the race. Ms Thomson stated that she was advised to at all times keep the mare balanced and comfortable in its action. She was of the belief that she had ridden the horse to the trainers instructions. Trainer Mr J Manzelann confirmed those instructions and felt that Apprentice Thomson had ridden accordingly until the final 50 metres where he was disappointed with her vigour. Mr Wieland agreed that those were the instructions issued and was in agreeance with Trainer Mr J Manzelmann’s assessment. After hearing all of the evidence and viewing the official race films stewards were critical of Ms Thomson’s lack of vigour and intiative over the concluding stages of the race. However after taking into account Ms Thomson’s relative inexperience being a 3kg claiming apprentice and riding at her first provincial TAB meeting, that whilst she rode to instructions there willl be times when she may need to show more initiative with stronger vigour in similar circumstances. She was further advised that future rides at TAB meetings will be monitored and should they fall below the standard of what is required a possible review of her license classification may be considered.

SLIPPERY SAGA – Raced 4 wide without cover for the majority of the event.

MODEL TO EXCEED – Had to be restrained near the 500 metres when awkwardly placed on the heels of SABA LASS, which shifted in marginally.

WULFIES LADY – Slow into stride.

Stewards questioned rider L. Attard regarding the tactics adopted on RED KISSES after the mare established a sizeable lead in the early and middle stages of the race. Jockey Attard explained to stewards that he had no real firm instructions other than to ride the mare where it was comfortable. He further stated that after riding RED KISSES out of the barriers the horse then took charge resulting in the reins slipping through his hands and him being unable to restrain his mount. Trainer Mr C. Brown confirmed those instructions and was of the opinion that the mare stepping up in distance from 1200 metres to 1609 metres today raced fiercely in the early and middle stages and in his opinion took charge of its rider. After viewing the official race film stewards were satisfied with the explanations tendered by Jockey L. Attard and Trainer Mr C. Brown, and no further action was taken.

RACE 5: Become a TTC Member Today - ½ Yearly Special BenchMark 60 Handicap -  1400 metres

He said that the mare was stepping up to 1400m for the first time and in his opinion failed to run out the distance. As a result he did not presssure the horse over the concluding stages. Whilst stewards noted the explanation he was reminded of his obligation in similar circumstances to at least ride his mounts out to the finish line.
