Woodham Supplementary Report From Cairns, 26.4.18 – Race 2: Benchmark 65 H’cap – 1600m SUPER MARIO - When questioned into his riding of the gelding on the day, rider J. Stanley stated he had no specific instructions other than to race with cover if possible, and that he was able to take up a position one horse off the fence following the leaders where the horse travelled well in the early and middle stages, however did become unbalanced near the 1300m and was momentarily steadied. He further advised he had commenced to ride the horse along leaving the 800m but was unable to sprint when the pace quickened leaving the 600m and lost some ground. He further added it had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight which caused him to change his whip hand, and that he was also hampered by another runner (JORDAN) which was shifting ground inwards and outwards in front of him after entering the home straight. He added that he was mindful the gelding was stepping up in distance from its previous outing and in his opinion would benefit from the run. Trainer F. Wieland confirmed the instructions although expressing some disappointment with the ride. Whilst Stewards noted the explanations, rider J. Stanley was nonetheless advised that a rider of his calibre would be expected to show greater urgency in future and not leave himself open to question in similar circumstances. General As F.
