SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From Townsville 23 April 2020

Race 3: Hygain Ratings Band 0 – 58 H'cap – 1000m

Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred passing the 200m in which CHEERS JOYCE (B. Thomson) had to be checked and lost ground. After hearing evidence from Jockey S. Sheargold the rider of HORORA VEL and Jockey Thomson, and viewing patrol footage of the incident, it was established that immediately prior CHEERS JOYCE had shifted in marginally making contact with TRAVERS (W. D’Avila), becoming unbalanced, shifting out away from that gelding and making contact with the hindquarters of HORORA VEL which was shifting in under pressure at the time, resulting in CHEERS JOYCE having to be checked. As Stewards were of the opinion that the main contributing factor was the shift from HORORA VEL Jockey Sheargold was severely reprimanded for careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a).

Race 8: TAB Ratings Band 0 – 55 H'cap – 1400m

S. Sheargold, the rider of DISTRACTED, pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(b), in that he failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race, which in the opinion of Stewards cost that gelding 3rd placing. In reaching their decision, Stewards placed considerable weight on the official margin which separated 3rd placed THIS GIRLS ON FIRE (B. Thomson) and DISTRACTED, being a short head, and were of the opinion that jockey Sheargold’s lack of vigour over the concluding stages had cost his mount at least that margin. Jockey Sheargold was subsequently fined the sum of $1000. In determining penalty, Stewards gave consideration to the fact that this was Jockey Sheargold’s 2nd infringement under the rule in a long career, however were also particularly mindful that this was a TAB race meeting and his mount was the race favourite and as a consequence his actions would have had a significant impact on the outcome of wagering on the event. Jockey Sheargold was advised of his right to Internal Review.
