STEWARDS REPORT TOWNSVILLE TURF CLUB TUESDAY 27 FEBRUARY 2024 WEATHER – OvercastTRACK RATING – Soft 7: Upgraded to Soft 6 following Race 4.RAIL – +5.5m 1000m-W/Post, +2m RemainderPENETROMETER – 5.84 OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – D. GriffithsStewards – R. Neal. P. Warren, J.McIntosh, S. Nosworthy (Cadet) GENERAL Stewards permitted the following rider overweights:Race 4 – A.Layt +0.5kgRace 5 – A.Thomson +1.0kgRace 7 – A.Thomson +1.0kg As B Appo was unable to attend the meeting due illness, changes were permitted as per the raceday summary. Jockey B. Appo was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to next riding. Race 1: LADBROKES MATES MODE MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200 M BURNS TO EMBRACE (GB) – Shifted out on jumping and bumped IMPERIUM. BONS OF STEEL – Slow to begin. ADMIRAL'S DAUGHTER (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Passing the 700 metres, BURNS TO EMBRACE improved onto the heels of ADMIRAL’S DAUGHTER and that mare received an off-side hind heel laceration as a result. A post-race veterinary examination revealed minor injury to the heel region. MISS ORWELL – Contacted the barrier on jumping unbalancing its rider. HUGHIE VUITTON – Shifted in abruptly shortly after jumping and had to be corrected by its rider. FAIRYBOWER FLYER – Trainer J. Manzelmann was fined $100 pursuant to LR67(1) for failing to declare a rider within the prescribed time. Approaching the home turn, laid in contacting MISS ORWELL and then had to be straightened. IMPERIUM – Hampered on jumping. Had to be heavily restrained off heels near the 1000 metres when over-racing and continued to over-race up to the 600 metres. Race 2: HYGAIN QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000 M Prior to the running of Race 2, stewards noted minor abrasions to the off foreleg and near side hind of NOVEMBER FOAL. Trainer J. Manzelmann, who was acting on behalf of Trainer J. Hatfield, was advised under the provisions of AR 105(1)(d) that in future to report to the Stewards any occurrence or condition, which may affect the horse’s performance in a race. MR GRUMBLER – Held up for clear running over the final 100 metres. TEDDY BEE BEAR – Raced wide throughout. THE GENERAL TALKS – Contacted the barrier on jumping then shifted out bumping TEDDY BEE BEAR which then was taken out onto OUR SECRET AFFAIR. A post-race veterinary examination revealed some stiffness in the right carpus. MAGIC INTENT – Bumped COSMIC ATOM passing the 900 metres which was racing greenly. Jockey A. Thomson was questioned regarding the vigour shown over the concluding stages on the third placegetter MAGIC INTENT. In explanation Ms Thomson stated that she had ridden hands and heels in the early part of the straight but believed MAGIC INTENT had come to the end of its run near the 100 metres and had given of its best. Stewards questioned Trainer Mr M Taylor, who stated that he had provided no explicit instruction to Ms Thomson, however he advised that he had supported the horse to win the race. In assessing the matter, Ms Thomson was instructed that when circumstances permit, she is expected to show greater vigour than that demonstrated today. Stewards were satisfied that Ms Thomson’s riding of MAGIC INTENT had not compromised the filly’s finishing position on this occasion. NOVEMBER FOAL – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Began awkwardly and settled back. Making the home turn, shifted out abruptly onto the hind quarters of THE GENERAL TALKS which became unbalanced. WORTHY PRINCESS – Shifted out after the start. Raced ungenerously from the 800 metres up to the 600 metres. Apprentice R. Wilson was reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip 7 times prior to the 100m, two more occasions than permitted. OUR SECRET AFFAIR – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout. COSMIC ATOM – Raced greenly passing the 900 metres. Race 3: PROSECCO HOUR MARCH 5TH BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1400 M DEEL WITH ME – Hampered on jumping and was slow to muster in the early stages. TIOGA PASS – Shifted in on jumping and bumped DEEL WITH ME. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.SINGLE HONOR – Inclined to lay out throughout. In the home straight, hung out and had to be continually straightened by its rider. COOLMEANS (NZ) – Became awkwardly and was placed near the heels of SINGLE HONOR passing the 100 metres. Jockey A. Spinks accidentally dropped his whip near the winning post. Race 4: MEMBERSHIPS ON SALE NOW OPEN HANDICAP 1000 M SPELLCATCHER – Fractious in barriers prior to the start. Stood flat-footed as the start was affected and lost considerable ground. Trainer T. Button was advised the gelding would be required to trial satisfactorily prior to again being permitted to start in a race. BOLD HUNTER – Trainer Josh. Manzelmann was fined $100 pursuant to LR67(1) for failing to declare a rider within the prescribed time. Began awkwardly resulting in Jockey A. Spinks becoming unbalanced. Over-raced in the middle stages. Held up rounding the home turn before obtaining clear racing room near the 200 meters. Returned to the saddling enclosure with blood in the mouth region. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a minor laceration to the tongue. Following the running of race 4, the track was upgraded to a Soft 6. Race 5: LADBROKE IT! QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000 M NAHEIGHTKAY – Shifted out and bumped ROTH ‘N’ BUBBLE. ROTH 'N' BUBBLE – Contacted on jumping. RIVALON – Began awkwardly and bumped YANIT. KAI COME – Shifted in on jumping contacting EARTHA. LADY CONSORT – Refused to load into the barriers and was subsequently declared a late scratching by order of the stewards at 3:36pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on LADY CONSORT be refunded with the following deductions to apply- 1st – 6 cents the win, 3cents the place2nd – 8 cents the place3rd – 9 cents the place Trainer J. Lancaster was advised that LADY OF CONSORT would be required to obtain a barrier certificate prior to next racing. EARTHA – Finished tailed off from the field. Jockey R Wiggins reported that in the run he had some concerns with the filly’s action and elected not to pursue the field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. Trainer F. Wieland was advised to report to stewards should any relevant matter become apparent in coming days. YANIT – Prior to the running of the first event, YANIT escaped from the wash bay before being quickly recaptured. The filly underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Began awkwardly and bumped RIVALON. GROVERS PREDICTION – Slow to begin. Passing the 600m, the saddle of GROVERS PREDICTION shifted back placing that runner at a severe disadvantage for the remainder of the event. Race 6: LADBROKES BET TICKER BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1000 M HIT SNOOZE – Bounded on jumping then shifted in hampering VILLA TINTO. Raced wide in the middle stages. VILA TINTO – Hampered on jumping. Shied momentarily passing the 600m. WICKLOW LASS (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Lost a near side hind plate in running. On parading in the mounting yard, WICKLOW LASS became fractious and reared into the enclosure fence dislodging same. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Trainer B. Kenning was advised a warning was placed on the mare. TENNAGAIN – Bounded on jumping. Became held up near the 100 metres before shifting across heels to gain clear running. Lost an off-side hind plate in running. MISHANI PATRIOT – Lost contact with the field in the early stages and failed to recover any ground throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. Race 7: LADBROKES RACING CLUB BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP 1200 M NO LOVE LOST – When placed under pressure, shifted out passing the 200 metres bumping FLAMING HOMER. FLAMING HOMER – Bumped by another runner passing 200 metres. FLAMING TORCH (NZ) – Jumped in abruptly at the start making heavy contact with MISS HELMUT. Passing the 1000m, was crowded for racing room. Raced wide with cover throughout. SCAPINI – Raced wide throughout. BRADSHAW – Passing the 600m, raced in restricted room when LET’S RIDE shifted in momentarily. Hung out over the final 400 metres and had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight. ELLIE'S DREAM – Bumped after the start. Held up rounding the turn up to a point passing the 200 metres. GINASUE – Began awkwardly unbalancing its rider. MISS HELMUT- Bumped heavily at the start and then was buffeted for some distance. Shifted out passing the 1000m crowding FLAMING TORCH which had to be steadied.
