CURLEY MAC – Raced wide throughout, and was then inclined to lay in in the home straight.

ISLA POPPY – Began awkwardly and lost ground.  On return to scale, apprentice S. Lacy advised that, in her opinion, the mare did not travel comfortably at any stage of the event and failed to respond to her riding, and was disappointing.  Trainer W. Oakenfull reported that he had been happy with the mare’s preparation leading up to the event, and he could offer no tangible explanation for the horse’s disappointing performance today.  Mr Oakenfull will advise Stewards should anything come to light in the coming days.  Stewards noted the explanations.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

ALL OUR WIVES – Began awkwardly.  Raced wide throughout.

PINBALL DAWN – Raced wide rounding the home turn.

SOLTINHO LAD – Got its head in the air whilst being steadied near the 700m.  When questioned by Stewards as to why his mount settled further back than its usual racing pattern, jockey N. Evans stated that after travelling a short distance, he realised he would be caught wide and at that point he elected to steady his mount, and settled further back in the field than he would have preferred.  Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 3: EAST COAST LUBES PTY LTD COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1310M

SWITCH AT MIDNIGHT – Raced keenly in the early stages.  Held up entering the home straight.  Became awkward on heels near the 300m, and shifted across heels to obtain clear running.  Bumped by another runner near the 50m.  On return to scale, jockey J. Oliver reported that his mount was inclined to lay in in the home straight.

TARNHELM – Began awkwardly.

KING’S MEN – Shifted wider on the track to obtain clear running near the 300m.  Jockey T. Banks was reprimanded for using the whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m.  In determining penalty, Stewards took into account jockey Banks’ recent good record in relation to this rule.

SPANISH FELLA – Shifted out and bumped another runner near the 600m and raced wide from that point.

ROCK ‘N’ RHUMBA – Bumped by another runner near the 50m.

PATCHE GIFT – Raced keenly in the early stages and raced wide throughout.  Had to be steadied from heels at the 1200m.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD – Bumped by another runner near the 600m and was forced wider on the track, which resulted in the horse racing wide for the remainder of the event.

Race 4: WEST-STAR MOTORS TOOWOOMBA FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1310M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed slightly to allow the connections of AKUA, the 4th  placegetter, to view the stewards patrol footage in the home straight.  Correct weight was subsequently declared on the judge’s semaphored numbers.

POET’S SOCIETY – Slow to begin.

AKUA – Tightened for room between runners shortly after the start and lost ground.

ALPENGLOW – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 450m.

TACTICAL MANUEVER – Raced wide throughout.

The start of this race was delayed when a number of runners proved difficult to load.

BALLINGALL DUKE – Raced greenly, hung out and proved difficult to ride throughout.

MY KASHKARD – Laid in in the home straight and proved difficult to ride.

PROSSIMITA – Bumped at the start by another runner.

REAL LUCKY – Began awkwardly.

SIDEREUS SMILE – Began awkwardly.  Steadied when placed in restricted room at the 900m.  Shifted in under pressure near the 100m.

VEGAS RULER – On return to scale, jockey Brad Appo reported that the gelding got its tongue over the bit.  Raced keenly in the early stages.  Steadied from heels near the 1200m, shifted out and raced wide from that point onwards.

LANDED – Raced wide from the 800m.

KNIGHT ERRANT – Trainer D. Bell was reprimanded for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time.  Raced in restricted room near the 1300m.

PROUDER – Had to be steadied from heels on entering the home straight.  Shifted out near the 150m to obtain clear running.

Race 7: DIVERSIFIED RESOURCE MANAGEMENT MAIDEN PLATE – 1650M

BIG THUNDER – Tightened for room at the start.

DAY OF THE FOX – Began awkwardly.  Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.  Stewards inquired as to why jockey Brad Appo waived his whip towards apprentice N. Keal, the rider of SHADOW EMPIRE, over the concluding stages of the event.  After taking submissions from jockey Appo and Apprentice Keal, Stewards accepted that the gesture by jockey Appo was not made in a threatening manner towards apprentice Keal, however jockey Appo was cautioned against making a similar gesture in the future as it may be perceived in a negative light by the public.

BOUCHARD – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Following the event, Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred in the mounting yard prior to the event.  After taking submissions from apprentice Keal and the official involved, Stewards reprimanded apprentice N. Keal for misconduct under rule AR. 83(a).
