SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

Stewards reconvened an adjourned inquiry from Saturday 17 February 2018 in relation to the cause of DE BANDIT VEGA falling and ROSIE’S TIARA blundering after passing the 350m in Race 6, the Art & Soul Maiden Plate (1300m). Following the incident on 17 February 2018, Stewards took initial evidence from App. S. Sweeney, the rider of ROSIE’S TIARA, S. Bogenhuber, the rider of QUEEN OF HAVANA, Beau Appo, the rider of HUGHSTAAD, and App. E. Ljung, rider of ROCKING OSSIE. As G. Geran was injured and had been transported to hospital Stewards adjourned the inquiry to enable him to give evidence when he was medically fit to do so.

Upon resuming the inquiry today, App. S. Sweeney and jockey S. Bogenhuber had no further comments to add to their initial evidence provided on the evening of 17 February 2018. When asked to comment, jockey G. Geran advised that he had no recollection of the incident. All parties were subsequently afforded the opportunity to view the Stewards patrol footage and invited to make any further comments regarding the incident.

Stewards reviewed all evidence before them and noted that QUEEN OF HAVANA (S. Bogenhuber) was in a 3 wide position approaching the 350m, and had a tendency to lay out from that point and, in doing so, shifted to a 4 wide position approaching the 300m. Stewards further noted that at this point DE BANDIT VEGA (G. Geran) was endeavouring to improve to the outside of the heels of QUEEN OF HAVANA, and for a number of strides DE BANDIT VEGA was awkwardly placed at the heels of QUEEN OF HAVANA, and when attempting to come outside the heels of that runner, the off fore leg of DE BANDIT VEGA made contact with the near hind leg of QUEEN OF HAVANA causing DE BANDIT VEGA to blunder and fall dislodging jockey Geran. Stewards also noted that ROSIE’S TIARA (App. S. Sweeney), which was racing to the outside of DE BANDIT VEGA, was unable to avoid DE BANDIT VEGA and became entangled with that runner and, as a result, lost its footing and became unbalanced dislodging App. S. Sweeney.

Stewards were of the view that as DE BANDIT VEGA was attempting to improve to the outside of the heels of QUEEN OF HAVANA which laid out for a short distance rounding the turn, they could not apportion blame to any one rider, and therefore reported it as a racing incident.

GENERAL

As Bradley Appo was ill, App. C. Gallagher was injured and R. McMahon was unable to produce a medical clearance, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: AUDI CENTRE TOOWOOMBA MAIDEN PLATE – 1625M

During the preliminary GUACAMOLE dislodged its rider and made contact with the fence at the rear of the 1600m chute. Upon veterinary examination it was found that the gelding had sustained a laceration to the near side stifle, and was withdrawn by Stewards on veterinary advice at 11.40am. All monies invested on the gelding were ordered to be refunded with the following deductions applicable.

0 cents in the dollar for the Win #8
7 cents in the dollar for place of winner #8
2 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #9
6 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #7

SP bets are not subject to deductions. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to its next race start.

HAVEN DUKE – After being caught wide in the early stages, Apprentice S. Lacy permitted her mount to stride forward to obtain a position outside the leader near the 900m.

LEGACY WARS – Bumped on the hindquarters and became unbalanced leaving the 300m.

OUR MATE TURTLE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced wide for the majority.

CHASINGWAGTAILS – Disappointed for a run leaving the 300m, and was forced to shift to the inside to secure clear running. As Trainer N. Larkin was absent from the meeting he will be interviewed at a later date in relation to the mare’s improved performance.

SHE’S UP BEAT – Had a tendency to lay out whilst being restrained for some distance approaching and passing the 1300m.

Race 2: TOOWOOMBA PLASTICS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1625M

DE VILLIERS – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

BENICO’S PRINCE – Slow to begin. Raced 3 wide from the 900m.

KUTTAMURRA AL – Laid in over the concluding stages.

Race 3: CARLTON MID QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1100M

The start of this race was delayed when CHINCHINBILLA became fractious in the barriers and broke through the gate riderless before being quickly recaptured. The gelding was subsequently examined by the veterinary surgeon, and cleared to take its place in the field. The gelding again became fractious in the barriers prior to the start being effected. Trainer R. Smith was advised that the gelding will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to next racing.

CONSPICUOUS – Stood flat-footed at the start and lost considerable ground. A warning was placed on the horse’s manners. Had difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

SEVENEEZ – Jockey Beau Appo reported that, in his opinion, the gelding was not suited today when being challenged for the lead by another runner, and it would therefore be better suited if able to obtain an unchallenged lead in its races. He was nevertheless disappointed in the horse’s overall performance.

ENCHANTED REIGN – Slow to begin.

GLOBALLY – Raced greenly when racing to the inside of runners near the 700m.

SMOKIN’ HUSSAY – Slow to begin.

STRADA GRANDE – Bumped at the start.

Race 4: HANNAS QTIS 3YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1100M

The start of this race was delayed when UMAWINNER became reluctant to proceed to the barriers during the preliminary. Trainer L. Hatch was advised that the filly will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to next racing.

The start of this race was further delayed when a number of runners proved difficult to load.

Both TRUE COLOURS and CUPID’S AFFAIR were tightened for room leaving the 100m when racing to the outside of LUCKY FEELING, and to the inside of UMAWINNER (App. J Murphy) which shifted in when not completely clear. Apprentice J. Murphy was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

BOSS’S BOY – Bumped heavily on jumping away, and was then buffeted shortly after the start. Jockey B. Pengelly reported that the gelding, which was having its first start, failed to travel strongly at any stage of the race and, when placed under pressure in the home straight ran on only fairly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be exhibiting an abnormal upper respiratory noise. On this advice, Stewards advised Trainer J. Crompton that she will be required to produce a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to next racing, including the results of an endoscopic examination.

RINGO’S MAGIC – Began awkwardly.
UMAWINNER – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Lost the near fore plate in running.

SOZZLED – Tightened for room shortly after the start.

LUCKY FEELING – Raced wide without cover until improving to a position outside the leader near the 600m.

Race 5: CROWE HORWATH CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1300M

CLIVEDEN – Raced keenly in the early stages.

TONY BALONEY – Jockey N. Tomizawa and Trainer T. Sears both reported that the gelding, which was first up from a significant spell, will derive a fitness benefit from today’s race, and added that the horse would be better suited over a greater distance moving forward in its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

DELANEY’S DESIRE – Slow to begin.

MISHANI VAIDRA – Slow to begin.

A BEAR IN THERE – Connections advised that it would be the intention for the gelding to be ridden with cover today if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly.

Race 6: NEIL MANSELL CONCRETE MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M

CANUNGRA KID – Bumped heavily on jumping away.

GREYNOMAD – Bumped on jumping away. Jockey S. Bogenhuber reported that her mount raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight, however she could offer no other explanation for the gelding’s poor performance. Trainer R. Lipp agreed with jockey Bogenhuber’s comments, and added that he may experiment with the addition of winkers and a tongue-tie to the horse’s gear.

HARRY’S ME BOY – Bumped on jumping away.

KAY KAY BOY – Began awkwardly and bumped another runner. Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide with cover throughout.

BEHIND THE THISTLE – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

JUST TINA – Held up for clear running for a short distance leaving the 200m.

WICCAN REDE – Began awkwardly.

HONEST NATALIE – Hung out rounding the turn near the 900m.

Race 7: PIMM’S BENCHMARK 70 H’CAP – 1200M

IRON GEORGE – Forced wider on the track by another runner near the 900m and, as a result, raced 3 wide without cover for the remainder of the race.

ALASSAK – Steadied from the heels of another runner whilst laying in near the 200m, and then continued to lay in. Raced wide with cover throughout.

CAPTAIN LEO – After being crossed by another runner near the 900m, the gelding was steadied from heels whilst racing keenly, and then shifted out to avoid heels.

SECRET HARMONY – Stewards questioned Trainer B. Butts in relation to the gelding’s seemingly improved performance. Mr. Butt’s advised that the gelding was resuming from a significant spell today, and as the horse has previously performed well first up he had expected a forward showing from the gelding today. He added that, in his opinion, the step back in class today was also to the gelding’s benefit.

JUST AS LOYAL – Held up and unable to improve over the final 50m, and went to the line without being fully test.

DRIVING WHEELS – Slow to begin.

REIGNING THUNDER – Began awkwardly.

Race 8: GAINSBOROUGH LODGE BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed when STELLARCRAFT lost the bridle when entering the barriers, and it had to be refitted.

LIFE’S LIKE THAT – Laid in over the concluding stages.

ROOI ROE – Became fractious in the barriers, and then began awkwardly and bumped another runner. Stewards questioned jockey L. Tilley in relation to the performance of the mare which weakened over the concluding stages. Jockey Tilley advised that the mare never travelled strongly at any stage during the race and when placed under pressure in the home straight did not feel entirely comfortable in its action and, for that reason, he desisted from riding his mount out over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities, however the mare did lose the off fore plate in running.

TIN’S POCKET – Bumped and tightened for room at the start. Hung out leaving the 800m.

LIPSYNC – Bumped at the start.

STELLARCRAFT – Slow to muster early speed, and was slightly hampered shortly after the start. When asked to comment on the performance, jockey Beau Appo advised that due to the fast early tempo he settled further back in the field than he had anticipated and, as a result, the horse did not travel well in the early and middle stages. He added that when placed under pressure the gelding failed to respond as he had anticipated and proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

Race 9: JOE WAGNER GROUP CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1050M

During the preliminary, Apprentice N. Keal was dislodged from WINE BARREL, suffering a seemingly harmless fall. After galloping a short distance, the horse was recaptured, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

The start of this race was delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate event.

WINE BARREL – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Hung in throughout. A warning was placed on the horse’s manners.

THE MANAGEMENT – Bumped and tightened for room at the start.

IMAGINALTHEPEOPLE – Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

SUZY’S ROSE – Raced wide without cover for the majority. Steadied to avoid the heels of IMAGINALTHEPEOPLE (App. J. Murphy) which shifted in when not completely clear near the 900m. Apprentice J. Murphy was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

MAGIC BY DESIGN – Bumped another runner at the start.

GRAND EDGEROI – Had difficulty securing clear running over the final 100m of the race.

BUBBA ROCKER – Bumped another runner at the start. Laid out rounding the turn near the 700m.

SPLASH OF CRISTAL – Steadied to avoid the heels of IMAGINALTHEPEOPLE near the 900m when that runner commenced to hang in despite the efforts of its rider.

CALM QUALO – Raced wide with cover throughout. Steadied from heels in the early stages of the home straight.
