GENERAL

As Apprentice J. Hodge was injured, and jockey P. Hammersley was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: FURNEYS BENCHMARK 62 H’CAP – 2125M

Prior to the race, a form update was transmitted by the on course broadcaster in relation to AMTHAAL as the mare’s most recent run at Doomben on Wednesday 15 August 2018, in which it placed second, did not appear in the race book.

AMTHAAL – Raced keenly in the early stages. Momentarily raced in restricted room to the inside of ALFIE JUNIOR whilst overracing passing the winning post on the first occasion. Apprentice L. Kilner and Trainer Mr. B. Currie both expressed the opinion that the mare had not backed up satisfactorily following its start at Doomben two days ago and, for that reason, it raced flat today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the near fore leg. Trainer Mr. B. Currie was advised that the mare will require a veterinary clearance prior to being permitted to race again.

VALTARI – Began very awkwardly and made contact with the barrier partition and, as a result, lost ground.

Race 2: TRACKSIDE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1640M

FAOLAN – Slow to begin and lost ground and, as a result, settled further back in the field than anticipated. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Apprentice L. Kilner could offer no explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance. Trainer Mr. B. Currie expressed disappointment in the gelding’s performance today. He advised that the horse had continued to work well following its last start win, and he could therefore offer no tangible explanation for the disappointing performance.  Mr. Currie also advised that he will monitor the manner in which the gelding pulls up from today’s race, and if he is not satisfied with its post-race recovery he will elect to spell the horse. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be very dehydrated. A post-race swab sample was also taken from the gelding.

ON A HIGH – Laid in rounding the home turn and in the home straight.

Race 3: AG RIGGING MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M

IN SEATTLE – Steadied from heels near the 350m.

THE BIG EATER – Held up and unable to improve between the 500m and the 400m.

LILLANLIV – Steadied to avoid the heels of BENICSTRESS (G. Geran) near the 150m when that runner shifted in whilst weakening. Jockey G. Geran was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

NANCY BIRD – Jockey R. Faehr was fined $100 for using his whip on more than 5 occasions prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, Stewards took into account jockey Faehr’s prior good record in relation to this rule.

THE TRUMP TRAIN – Stood flat-footed at the start and lost valuable ground.

Race 4: NEIL MANSELL TRANSPORT QTIS 3YO COLTS & GELDINGS MAIDEN PLATE – 1110M

As B. Stewart was unable to arrive on course to fulfil his engagement on LUCKY FIX due to transport difficulties, Beau Appo was substituted as rider.

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow the connections of 2nd placegetter TROOPER KELLY, to view the Stewards' patrol footage to ascertain whether there were grounds to lodge an objection. After viewing the film, the connections indicated that they did not wish to proceed, and correct weight was declared on the judge’s semaphored numbers.

DE NOVO – Checked near the 450m. Kenji Yoshida, the rider of HEART VANDELAY, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 450m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of TROOPER KELLY (B. Pengelly) resulting in that runner becoming awkward and shifting out, which in turn resulted in DE NOVO (N. Tomizawa) being checked when taken across the heels of FINNFERNO (M. Du Plessis).  K. Yoshida’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 18 August 2018 and expire at midnight on Sunday 26 August 2018. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Yoshida’s guilty plea and his previous good record in relation to this rule.

FINNFERNO – When questioned by Stewards regarding the seemingly improved performance of the colt, Trainer Mr. W. Hulbert advised that the horse was racing first up from a spell today,  after its first campaign in which it performed disappointingly at its only race start.  Mr. Hulbert advised that the colt’s work and barrier trials had improved somewhat during this preparation, however he was nevertheless surprised that the horse had improved to the degree which enabled it to win today. Stewards noted the explanation.

LUCKY FIX – Steadied to avoid the heels of another runner near the 950m, and shifted wider on the track for a short distance. Steadied to avoid heels near the 450m.

THE INVESTIGATOR – Momentarily raced in restricted room approaching the 800m. Apprentice S. Lacy reported that her mount raced greenly throughout.

TROOPER KELLY – Slow to muster early speed. Bumped on the hindquarters by another runner on entering the home straight and, as a result, became unbalanced. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

UNO TOPS – Slow to muster early speed.

Race 5: HELLO HARRY QTIS 3YO FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1110M

ALL SHIRAZ – Slow to muster early speed. Raced 4 wide without cover for the majority.

GENERAL’S BRIDE – Began awkwardly, and was further hampered when heavily bumped at the start. Held up rounding the home turn before being shifted wider in the early stages of the home straight to secure clear running.

GLOBAL FACTOR – Laid out rounding the home turn. Jockey R. Ride reported that, in her opinion, the filly was not suited by leading today due to the horse racing greenly throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly revealed no significant findings.

OUR LIL’ HUSSEY – Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground.  Raced wide with cover for the majority.

SHEBRINGS VOICE – Began awkwardly, and shifted in making heavy contact with another runner. Race wide without over throughout.

WEARETENFORTYEIGHT – Laid out rounding the home turn.

COUPE DE VILLE – Laid out rounding the home turn.

Race 6: K&R PLUMBING SUPPLIES BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1300M

OGGIE – Raced wide for the majority.

PALACE TYCOON – Forced wider on the track by another runner leaving the 900m and, as a result, raced 3 wide without cover for the remainder. Forced wider on the track by another runner over the concluding stages.

LAST ARMAGEDDON – Laid out rounding the home turn and in the home straight and, as a result, was forced wider on the track.

WALTHAM – Slow to muster early speed.

GENERAL COS – A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had bled from both nostrils. Trainer Mr. N. Saunders was advised that the horse will be ineligible to race for 3 months, and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a Steward.

SHADOW AFFAIR – Steadied shortly after the start.

MR CHOW – Forced wider on the track by another runner in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a deep laceration to the gelding’s off fore canon.

Race 7: TOOWOOMBA TRUCK SPARES CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed when ROTINDY, which was kicked behind the barriers,  underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was declared at late scratching at 6.54pm on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight Stewards ordered that all monies invested on ROTINDY be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

0 cents in the dollar for the Win #2
0 cents in the dollar for place of winner #2
6 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #3

The start was further delayed when BY THE LAW, which became fractious in the barriers, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination before being passed fit to start.

MISTER SPINKS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

BOLD SAM – Commenced to race keenly near the 800m, shifted out and bumped another runner.

MAGINOT LINE – Stewards accepted trainer J. Thomas’ explanation for the late declaration of N. Thomas as rider.

DREAMER’S GOAL – Began awkwardly and bumped another runner on a number of occasions in the early stages. Bumped by another runner near the 800m. Race wide without cover throughout.
