CAVITATION – Apprentice A. Thompson was reminded of his obligation to not raise his arm above shoulder height whilst using his whip.
UNIQUE MISTIQUE – Tightened for room on jumping away. Tightened for room and checked near the 900m to avoid the heels of BRUMBY JACK. K. Yoshida, the rider of BRUMBY JACK, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of UNIQUE MISTIQUE resulting in that runner being tightened for room and checked to avoid heels. Jockey Yoshida’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 9 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 16 February 2019 and expire at midnight on Monday 25 February 2019. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Yoshida’s prior good record in relation to this rule. Hung out under pressure in the home straight and shifted wider on the track.
MOSS GO NOW – Steadied to avoid heels near the 850m.
ALBA GU BRATH – Raced in restricted room for a short distance whilst passing the winning post on the first occasion. Checked to avoid the heels of CAVITATION near the 1400m. Apprentice A. Thompson, the rider of CAVITATION, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 1400m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of ALBA GU BRATH resulting in that runner being checked to avoid heels. Apprentice Thompson’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 16 February 2019 and expire at midnight on Sunday 24 February 2019. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration Apprentice Thompson’s guilty plea, and his prior good record in relation to this rule.
RUBY RED SLIPPERS – As apprentice S. Sweeney was unable to fulfil her engagement as she was riding at another venue, Stewards permitted T. Marshall to be substituted as rider when no other apprentice was available. Held up badly at the heels of a tiring runner for some distance passing the 500m.
Race 2: CREATE WITH COTTEE QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1210M
HEART OF KINGS – Overraced badly in the early and middle stages and proved difficult to restrain.
WELCOME NUGGET – Trainer M. Nolan was fined $100 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card.
MISHANI VALENTINO – Raced keenly in the early stages. Jockey Beau Appo could offer no explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance other than that the gelding may have resented the cross-over nose band which was added to the horse’s gear for the first time today.
ARQUERA – Declared at late scratching at 12.50pm on veterinary advice.
TOP LUCK – Slow to begin. Broke down badly in the near fore leg on pulling up resulting in Apprentice M. Wishart being dislodged. Apprentice M. Wishart was stood down from her remaining engagements, and riding replacements were made in Races 3, 5 and 8 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. After being examined by the veterinary surgeon, the filly was euthanized on humane grounds. Blood and urine samples were taken from the filly, and it was also sent for a post-mortem.
Due to the delay following this race, the starting times of Races 3 to 7 were put back one race time, with Race 8 rescheduled to 9.40pm.
Race 3: AG RIGGING CLASS 4 H’CAP – 1210M
ALL PLUCK – Steadied to avoid heels near the 800m.
THAT’S MA BOY – Raced wide without cover throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
STAR ADELE – Slow to begin.
DAZET – Slow to begin.
Race 4: BRISBANE RIVERVIEW HOTEL CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1210M
The start of this race was delayed to enable the removal of a wallaby from the track. Due to the delay, the starting times of Races 4 to 7 were again put back one race time, with Race 8 rescheduled to 10.10pm.
After viewing the Stewards' patrol footage, Beau Appo, the rider of 2nd placegetter DREAMTIMER, lodged an objection against SOGNI (S. Bogenhuber) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 1000m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, it was established that SOGNI did cross DREAMTIMER near the 1000m whilst not completely clear, however Stewards were of the opinion that DREAMTIMER would have ultimately settled in the same trailing position behind SOGNI had the interference not occurred. Bearing in mind the proximity of the incident to the winning post and the three-quarter length margin between the horses at the finish, Stewards dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the judge’s semaphored numbers. At a subsequent inquiry, jockey S. Bogenhuber was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that she permitted her mount to shift in near the 1000m when insufficiently clear of DREAMTIMER (Beau Appo) resulting in that runner clipping heels and losing ground. Jockey Bogenhuber’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 10 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 23 February 2019 and expire at midnight on Tuesday 5 March 2019. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Bogenhuber’s exemplary record in relation to this rule.
WALL STREET TYCOON – As K. Yoshida was unable to fulfil his engagement due to the delay following Race 2 today, E. Ljung was substituted as rider. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
KIBBIT RAHEEB – Raced wide without cover throughout.
RED MONKEY – Slow to begin.
Race 5: JOE WAGNER GROUP MAIDEN PLATE – 1640M
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, SEA MAGIC was disqualified from its fifth placing under the provisions of AR. 143(a) when jockey Beau Appo weighed in in excess of half a kilogram underweight. Jockey Appo subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR. 143(b) in that he returned to scale in excess of half a kilogram underweight. Jockey Appo was fined $1,000. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Appo’s guilty plea, however they were also mindful of the seriousness of the breach of this Rule.
C’MOME PADDYREILLY – Slow to begin.
PUNCHIE – As S. Sweedman was unable to fulfil his engagement due to injury, Stewards permitted N. Thomas to be substituted as rider. Steadied from heels near the 1400m.
IF THE SHOE FITS – Brushed the running rail whilst weakening near the 200m. Stewards questioned Apprentice H. Phillips in relation to the tactics adopted on the mare which led the event by a considerable distance during the early and middle stages. Apprentice Phillips advised that she was instructed to ride in a leading position, which she was able to do after beginning well. She added that during the middle stages the mare had a tendency to overrace, which resulted in her leading the race by a greater distance than she had intended. She went on to say that she had also been instructed to allow her mount to stride forward from near the 800m as it has a tendency to race one paced and, for that reason, she allowed the mare to stride forward from the 800m to comply with the instructions. Trainer T. Pascoe confirmed the instructions issued to Apprentice Phillips. Stewards were of the view that it would have been more advantageous to not press the mare until a point closer to the home turn given the lead the horse had already established, however they took the matter no further bearing in mind the instructions issued to Apprentice Phillips.
SEA MAGIC – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the off fore leg. Trainer C. Waller will be advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.
MEATBALL – Improved onto heels and shifted wider on the track near the 1400m and, as a result, raced wide with cover from that point. Improved onto the heels of a tiring runner near the 150m and shifted wider to improve.
LOVE IS ALL AROUND – Raced wide in the early and middle stages.
Race 6: THANK YOU GARRY ATKINSON QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1050M
After the majority of the runners had been loaded into the barriers, it was identified that there was still some period of time prior to the scheduled start time. Stewards therefore ordered that the runners be removed from the barriers, and reloaded in accordance with the advertised start time.
BELASTRO – Slow to begin.
EMOTIVE MOUNTAIN – Placed in restricted room and became unbalanced leaving the 800m when RAINGURL (Beau Appo) shifted in. Jockey Beau Appo was reprimanded as a result of this incident.
DEADLY ONE – Slow to begin. Steadied whilst racing in restricted room near the 900m, and from this point commenced to race fiercely, shifted wider on the track and proved difficult to restrain.
POINTSTOHAPPINESS – Raced in restricted room leaving the 900m and was steadied when PERUDO (B. Stewart) shifted in when not completely clear. Jockey B. Stewart will be advised that he has been issued with a reprimand as a result of this incident.
Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred leaving the 900m in which RAINGURL (Beau Appo) and EMOTIVE MOUNTAIN (M. Palmer) were both tightened for room, became unbalanced and lost ground. Jockey S. Bogenhuber, the rider of BELASTRO, was subsequently found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that leaving the 900m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of RAINGURL and EMOTIVE MOUNTAIN resulting in both of those runners being tightened for room, becoming unbalanced and losing ground. Stewards ordered that this penalty be served concurrently with the penalty incurred in Race 4 today.
Race 7: QUEENSLAND ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1050M
MOUNTAIN COURAGE – Laid in in the early stages.
RULER’S PRIDE – Slow to begin.
BLACK CRUSADE – Began awkwardly.
BUBBA ROCKER – Steadied from heels shortly after the start.
Stewards questioned E. Ljung and S. Bogenhuber in relation to the tactics adopted on their respective runners which led the field by a considerable distance. Jockey Bogenhuber, the rider of MOUNTAIN COURAGE, advised that she was instructed to lead the race if possible and, for that reason, she rode her mount aggressively in the early stages. She added that near the 900m, whilst racing to the inside of FIONNLAGH (E. Ljung), her mount commenced to overrace and despite her efforts to restrain it continued to do so for some distance. Jockey Ljung also advised that her instructions were to lead the race if possible, however from shortly after the start, after obtaining a slight advantage on the runner to its inside, FIONNLAGH commenced to overrace badly and was unable to be restrained despite her efforts to do so. Whilst Stewards noted the explanations of both riders, and bearing in mind the racing manners of both horses, they were nevertheless advised by Stewards that, in their opinion, they should have made a greater effort to restrain to avoid setting such a fast tempo during the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination of FIONNLAGH revealed it to be exhibiting a poor post-race recovery. A post-race veterinary examination of MOUNTAIN COURAGE revealed it to be lame in the off hind leg. Trainer T. Sears will be advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to its next race start.
Race 8: FURNEYS MAIDEN H’CAP – 1000M
GUNNOBE – Began awkwardly.
