Keal reported on returning to scale that his instructions were to settle in a position where comfortable, and then to shift wider on the track from the 600m to allow the gelding clear running over the concluding stages. He added that, after complying with these instructions, the gelding failed to finish the race off.

SHE’S MY ANDY – Bumped at the start. Had to be eased near the 1000m to avoid the heels of ANTIPODEAN LAD (Beau Appo) which shifted in when not completely clear. Beau Appo was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances in the future. Commenced to overrace for a short distance after being eased to avoid heels near the 1000m, and shifted out bumping COCO MONSIEUR. Raced wide for the majority.

LET’S BOOM – Raced keenly in the middle stages and was restrained from heels on a number of occasions. Steadied to avoid the heels of WHY WOULDN’T YOU (Beau Appo) near the 200m when that runner shifted out. Beau Appo, the rider of WHY WOULDN’T YOU, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR. 131(a) in that near the 200m he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting out which resulted in LET’S BOOM, which was racing to his outside, having to be steadied to avoid heels. Beau Appo’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Monday 22 April 2019 and expire at midnight on Tuesday 30 April 2019. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Appo’s prior good record in relation to this rule.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight Stewards permitted jockey K. Yoshida, the rider of the 2nd placegetter, BERNIE’S TIGER, to view the photo-finish print for 1st. After viewing the print, jockey Yoshida was satisfied with the Judge’s semaphored numbers.

CHOPPA – When questioned by Stewards regarding the tactics adopted, and in particular the reason for obtaining a leading position by a considerable distance, Apprentice M. Nakao advised that her instructions were to obtain cover or, in the alternative, to set a soft tempo if able to obtain the lead.  She added that when she was caught wide without cover approaching the 1500m, the gelding commenced to overrace setting a fast tempo. Apprentice Nakao added that, when attempting to restrain in the middle stages, her saddle shifted which made it more difficult for her to restrain the gelding. Apprentice Nakao acknowledged that she was setting an unsuitably fast tempo, however was prevented in restraining as the gelding continued to overrace.  Trainer G. Sitek confirmed the instructions and, after viewing the films, supported Apprentice Nakao regarding her attempts to restrain and conceded that the horse had overraced and proved difficult to ride. Stewards accepted the explanations provided.

NAMIB – Jockey Beau Appo was fined $500 for excessive use of the whip, including in consecutive strides, prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Appo’s prior good record in relation to this rule, however they were also mindful that his mount had won the race by a close margin.
