QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT TOOWOOMBA TURF CLUB – SATURDAY 18 MAY 2019 WEATHER – FINETRACK RATING – GOOD 4 RAIL – 2MPENETROMETER – 5.19 OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – R. HitchenerStewards – J. Childs, T. WhiteClerk of Scales – ClubJudge – S. FaheyVeterinarian – Dr. G. SilvestriSwab Attendants – R. BurchmannStarter – P. BrennanJockeys Advocate – B. SaundersStewards Secretary – M. Weir GENERAL As Apprentice J. Grob was unable to attend the meeting due to illness, a riding replacement was made in Race 1 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Apprentice Grob was advised that he will require a medical clearance prior to resuming riding. As jockey S. Apthorpe, Apprentice A. Thompson and Apprentice M. Savva were unable to fulfil their respective engagements in Races 3 and 4 as they were riding at other venues, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. As Apprentice A. Thompson was injured at another venue, he was unable to fulfil his engagements in Races 5 and 6, and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Race 1: WHOLESALE HORSEWEAR HOUSE CLASS 3 PLATE – 1000M GETS SMOKIN’ – Slow to begin, and then had a tendency to lay in throughout. JUSTIFY – Jockey A. Fancourt reported that the gelding travelled well when racing outside the leader, however when placed under pressure it failed to respond to her riding and, in her opinion, proved disappointing. LADY CHICAGO – Slow to begin, and then proved reluctant to stretch out and lost ground. Race 2: HELLO HARRY CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1200M After becoming fractious in the mounting enclosure, BENNELONG was examined by the veterinary surgeon upon arriving at the barriers and was passed fit to start. ALL STARS – Laid in in the home straight and brushed the running rail of its own accord near the 200m. JAYDEE INDY – Steadied from heels near the 50m. AENGUS – Bled from both nostrils. Trainer J. Amory was advised that the gelding will be ineligible to race for 3 months, and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a gallop over 1000m in the presence of a Steward. BENNELONG – Raced with its head in the air leaving the 900m whilst being steadied to avoid the heels of ALL STARS (J. Oliver) which shifted in when not completely clear. Jockey Oliver was reprimanded. BRUTUS – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. FIRST WITNESS – Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages. DASHING OCEAN – Raced 4 wide without cover in the early and middle stages. TAMINICK GAP – Raced 3 wide with cover throughout. Steadied from heels leaving the 300m. ROTINDY – Declared a late scratching at 2.55pm as no suitable rider was available. SOLO ARTIST – Overraced badly from passing the 1000m and proved difficult to restrain for some distance. Brushed on the hindquarters by TROOPER KELLY near the 100m and, as a result, became unbalanced. SLY GRIN – Raced 3 wide with cover throughout. Race 3: BRISBANE RIVERVIEW HOTEL MAIDEN H’CAP – 1300M The declaration of correct weight was delayed to enable Apprentice C. Gallagher, the rider of SPICE TRADER which dead-heated for 3rd place with TIGERPOWER, to view the photo finish print. After viewing the print, Apprentice Gallagher wished to contest the placings as he was of the opinion that his mount had finished in outright 3rd place rather than dead-heating with TIGERPOWER. After taking evidence from Apprentice Gallagher and the Judge, Mr S. Fahey, Stewards were satisfied that a margin could not be detected between the runners, and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s semaphored numbers. INTERFLORA EXPRESS – Raced 3 wide with cover for the majority. PHOENIX FLYER – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. ENCHANTED REIGN – Raced 3 wide with cover throughout. MADAM MAHAL – After standing awkwardly in the barriers, the mare began awkwardly and lost ground. TIGERPOWER – Laid out, and shifted very wide on the track, when placed under pressure in the home straight. Race 4: NEIL MANSELL TRANSPORT CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1850M STORMY LEO – Declared a late scratching at 3.20pm on veterinary advice. FLYING SEBA – Stewards questioned jockey M. Cox in relation to the tactics adopted on the mare which had established a considerable lead in the early and middle stages of the race. Jockey Cox advised that after being caught wide near the 1600m she elected to ride the mare forward to obtain a position closer to the rail, rather than remain wide. She went on to say that from the 1200m she was reluctant to overly restrain the mare, as when she had ridden the horse at its previous start it had resented being restrained. Having had the opportunity to review the patrol footage, jockey Cox agreed with Stewards that she had erred in not attempting to restrain the mare further once it established the lead near the 1200m, which would have afforded the horse a better run during the middle stages. Whilst Stewards were mindful of jockey Cox’s explanation in relation to the mare’s racing characteristics at its previous start, they advised her that the ride fell below the required expectation at a provincial meeting however, bearing in mind the manner in which the horse finished off the race, they could not be satisfied that her riding was culpable under the rules. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be exhibiting a poor post-race recovery, and that it had sustained a superficial laceration to its near hind leg. Race 5: GAINSBOROUGH LODGE QTIS 2YO MAIDEN H’CAP – 1050M RAGING POLE – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. INCHING CLOSER – After being ridden aggressively in the early stages, the colt commenced to overrace leaving the 800m and, as a result, improved into a narrow run between the running rail and EEYORE which then resulted in the colt being buffeted and losing ground. SISTER KATHLEEN – Slow to begin. MISHANI ROMANCE – Lunged forward in the barriers just prior to the start being effected and made contact with the gate. The filly then put its head down and, as a result, lost considerable ground on jumping away. As Stewards were satisfied that the only reason for the filly losing ground at the start was its own manners, the horse was a confirmed starter. Following the race, Apprentice C. Gallagher reported that he had sustained a groin injury as a result of this incident. STARRY BEAUTY – Began awkwardly and lost ground, and then failed to muster early speed. Race 6: LIVING TURF QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1050M The start of this race was delayed when PONTEFRACT, which became fractious in the barriers, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. FURY OF THE STORM – Disappointed for a run near the 250m and, as a result, had to be steadied and shift wider on the track to secure clear running. THE GROUSE – Raced 4 wide without cover throughout. MIYAKO ODORI – Momentarily held up rounding the home turn. Apprentice S. Tomlinson accidentally dropped his whip leaving the 200m. SPIRIT’S SILK – Raced wide without cover for the majority. PONTEFRACT – Raced wide with cover for the majority. Race 7: TAYLOR BUILDING GROUP BENCHMARK 70 H’CAP – 1625M BERNIE’S TIGER – Laid out rounding the home turn. CYCLONE PATH – Shifted wider on the track to avoid heels when racing keenly near the 1200m and, as a result, raced wide for the remainder.
